This is a big series...
Need to shit all over the Royals, while the Sox and Yanks beat each other up.
We're fucked. We're bent over a stump and fucked. Live on the giant new HD Jumbotron at Kauffman.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.
I'm taking sarcasm to the extreme here.

I love the early gameday thread....
i wish the gameday threads started at 8am…that way it’s almost like a message board
9 = 8
line up
Iwamura, 2b
Upton, cf
Crawford, lf
Longoria, 3b
Pena, 1b
Floyd, DH
Navarro, c
Hinske, rf
Bartlett, ss
I really like
the moves at the top of the lineup by Maddon. It makes me feel better that it is L-R-L-R-L-R, rather than three out of the first four being left. Also, even though BJ has struggled with the bat over the last month his OBP is still great and with the dip in power makes more sense for him to be higher.
Also
Got that info from the heater and they had another post about Price pitching last night
allowing seven hits (including a homer) and three runs (two earned) over six innings. He also walked two and struck out six and didn’t get a decision as the Biscuits lost in the 10th inning.
and a comment that espn.com had reported the Bucs lowered the price for Nady.
why arent the rays interested in George Sherill, he has veteran experience and could really help our bullpen in late inning games…the O’s are looking for a shortstop and Reid Brignac would be a great give up for a quality bullpen player now
The O's dislike dealing inner-division.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
it's funny, sherrill isnt' worth brignac yet the O's would expect more
it’s almost never worth trading for a guy with more than 10 career saves
The O's dislike trading players from average teams
On the oft-chance they could become competitive in the future
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Sherril's got a career K/BB just over two and is an extreme flyball pitcher
he’s gotten away with not giving up a lot of homers in the past because he’s faced more than his fare share of lefties. he’s been exposed this year as a full-inning guy.
And you'd likely give up twice as much
To get a street
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Whatever
Wheeler isnt the problem in our bullpen, and if we could get another guy who produces like he has we should consider ourselves lucky
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
our problem is not having a bullpen ace.
the fact that we don’t have a good #4 or #5 reliever is much less pressing.
2 things
1. Yes, the need for bullpen depth is pressing. Case in point the other night while down 3-1 to Oakland, Maddon had to choose between using Howell on back-to-back nights, or ceding the loss….He chose the latter.
2. Wheeler has been very effective this year. If you’re projecting Street into the future, of course he will be better. But Wheeler has done just as well this year, and doesn’t play in a park with 9.5 miles of foul ground (Oakland has been a pitchers park for years)
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Calling Wheeler #4 OR #5
Is an insult
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions
i wasn't calling wheeler a 4 or 5, nor infering he was the problem (although he is a bit overrated right now)
he’s probably a 3 league-wide and currently #3 on the Rays
1/2 Howell/Balfour (still don’t know if Balfour’s for real real or just for real)
3 Wheeler
4 Percival
can you elaborate on the situation in #1? thanks.
and to get snarky about #2, I thought the editors of this site outlawed using reliever ERA or quoting half-year stats…
I didn't use ERA
His WHIP is lower as well. And if you can look past a miserable ‘07 you will see Wheeler has been a highly effective reliever for years…most of it done in the Houston bandbox.
Howell was warming in the pen the inning before Miller came into the game. Not coincidentally, the Rays had runners on base. As soon as the potential to tie or bring the game within a run ended, he sat Howell and proceeded to warm up Miller. The rest is history, as he had Miller try and work in a non-loogy situation and fail miserably.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions
totaly agree
with the depth of the pen…when I was watching the game I thought the same thing.
"I didn't use ERA. His WHIP is lower as well." -- no thanks
in 2005/2006, Wheeler’s K/BB was about 9/3; this year (i know) it’s 6/3. he’s also giving up more flyballs which will lead to more homeruns. his BABIP this year is .180—thanks defense. his FIP and xFIP are both around 4.50. Street’s 2008 K/BB is 9/2.5 and he’s been a bit unlucky in the HR/FB department. His xFIP and FIP are about 3.50.
in that situation, you’re saying the Rays were down two or three with a couple innings left? the difference between a crappy pitcher and a really good one in that situation is not as large as the difference between a good reliever and a great one in a really important situation (couple of runners on with a one-run lead in the ninth, for example.)
They were down 2
with 9 outs left.
And for the record, Percy/Howell/Wheeler/Balfour have blown a combined 3 saves between them this year (Zero for Wheeler), so it seems the Rays have more of a problem letting the game getting out of hand, than they do protecting small leads.

because they don’t really have anyone available to fill his role.
Honest opinions....you think we are going to make any trades
We have a week left and I really don’t feel like they are going to make a move. You have Price who could come up later on and pitch so they dont HAVE to do something in the pen or even the back of the rotation and it seems like the price for a bat is to high.
I think we make minor trades on 7/31
But I’d be shocked if we made any sort of a splash

This is an important question
Why do they keep putting mascot mode in NCAA Football? Why not use the time to make a decent Campus Legend mode instead?
They don't even finish games before they release them
The show has so many funky bugs in it. Even a HUGE bug from last years version they don’t even bother to fix.
They just know people will buy EA Sports games as long as sports continue to exist.
I have The Show for PS3, and 2k8 for 360
The Show definitely gets more playtime for the Road to the show mode, although i stick to 2k8 for franchise
The Show is one of the very few reasons to buy a PS3
2k8 is a below-average gameplay experience. This is one time where I wish EA was making the game.
i've probably spent more time with it then any other game
except maybe the Fuzion Frenzy demo on the Halo disc
Actually I was mistaken
The show isn’t an EA Sports game.
Even so… I enjoy it myself but it has a lot of silly little bugs.
Because Rocky The Bull goring an orangemen is hilarious

Here’s my scouting report. His fastball is currently above-average. Sits at 90, touches 91, with good lateral movement as well as sink. He would be very difficult to hit for righties. His breaking pitch is very rudimentary, more of a slurvy type pitches. Would probably have to be a slider because of the arm angle, but it did show flashes where it was tight.
If he really is serious about staying in the big leagues, he should move now. His future should be on the mound. And like Posnanski suggested, he could serve as a back-up SS as well as a utility player. This would be brilliant.

I don't really think a ML hitting coach is that important.
The minor league coaches seem like they would have more of an effect on a player to me.
He could help in some instances
but in a case like CC’s, don’t you think his approach is more a result of his minor league development
Crawford has said he ignores what the hitting coaches tell him.

I completely agree about CC...
When Eric Chavez an elite prospect, the A’s wouldnt promote him a level in the minors unless he had a certain walk rate. He developed his patience through proper instruction. There is no instruction at the big league level, only offering to help or point out flaws.
I was watching the Angels/Red Sox game on FOX

I’m not talking about counting rbis or comparing them across teams. I’m talking about the ability to drive runners in. As in hit a home run. As in hit a double with a man on first. I’m not concerned about the actual numbers, but more about the skill set to move men multiple bases.

But even still we need a hitter that can hit 40 doubles and 35 home runs. Uptons role is the guy that gets on base. We need another player to hit him in.

he has 6 home runs...
he is not a middle of the order bat right now..
He's not batting in the middle of the order right now.
He has a .390 OBP.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah exactly...
thats why i said we need to go get a bat that can hit in the middle of the order. bj does not belong there. that is exactly what ive been saying.
just like carl
bj has value, but they are not middle of the order bats. bj has the potential to develop into one (carl doesn’t), but he isn’t at this point in time.
You acted like B.J. isn't a good bat, that is wrong.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions
No I didn't
I said he wasn’t a middle of the order bat. BJ would be an excellent lead off hitter. Heck Grady Sizemore was not a middle of the order bat at the start of his career and he was a great lead off man. And now he has developed the skills to hit in the middle of the order. It would not surprise me to see BJ follow the same path.
And futher more,
when did he demand to bat in the middle of the order? He’s not a prima donna like CC. If CC got moved to the 7 hole to “take some pressure off” like Bossman was, he would have flipped out.

I was comparing their abilities right now to hit in the middle of the order
I’m fully aware BJ is a better baseball player with a better attitude.
There are no words for this...

And then chased him down in fact after bat gate.

Are you in the locker room or do you watch BJ at all other then when the camera is on him? I see him in the dugout enjoying himself quite often.

In 3rd grade, I modeled my batting stance after Dave Martinez. Maybe that’s why I turned out to be a no hit, no field SS/3B.

First time posting..
Hello I just signed up, and wanted to make a few comments, first of all I’m very disappointed with the offense, some players are being over selective on pitches and others are not being selective enough. Longoria and Iwamura are our toughest outs. The biggest disappointment this season has been B.J Upton, and Crawford is right on his heels.
Garza had a poor night, but its nice to have Bartlett back.
The Rays need to add a bat or two A.S.A.P, and Floyd and Gomes need to be traded or sent down.
Just my opinion
The biggest disappointment this season has been B.J Upton, and Crawford is right on his heels.
How is Upton a bigger disappointment than Crawford?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Because Upton is a better player
Expectations…that is what I think at least.
Crawford has fallen way shorter of our expectations than Upton.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Not mine
Either way it is pointless to argue about who is sucking more relative to their expectations
You are insane.
Carl is 14% worse than other big leaguers in OPS, BJ is 13% better. How can Carl be living up to your expectations more than B.J. unless you think Carl is a below average player?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
More like a specialty player
Average OPS and a zillion SBs to boost his value
Compared to his own standards or to league standards?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Hm...in this case I suppose I can see your point. Very well then.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
While I think BJ has fallen short of my expectations moreso than Carl I also think BJ has more of an excuse. I personally think BJ is hurt or his injured shouldered altered his mechanics. I think that is the cause for his drop, and that is understandable. However I think CCs problem is more about attitude and preparation.
Exactly
Gomes isn’t our problem. Our problem is the top of our order sucks vs lefties.
One series doesn't make up for a year of poor performance
Our offense clearly has more than one problem, and Gomes is on the list somewhere.
Agree that one series doesn't make up for a year of poor performance
And I’m not a huge Gomes fan either, but we’ve waited this long for him to come around. Why not wait a little longer?
He's going to turn it around, but I'm not sure to what amount.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
He is simply a back up outfielder
He is a good solid guy to have off the bench as a power bat. What we need are our everyday players to start producing everyday.
He's a fine platoon player when he's producing.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't even care about the platoon
I like him as an 8th or 9th inning option as a PHer.
I'm all for giving him the rest of the year, only because the other options don't seem too appealing.
If he doesn’t have a stellar second half, he better be replaced.
Welcome Pete
Never speak poorly of Upton again.

Sorry, but I don't think one player is going to change this offense
If the CC and Pena don’t start performing
We could stick with the lineup we have and see what happens, but if we do that we have no chance of playoffs this years IMO.
I just don’t see the Rays spending big money in the off-season on free agents, so making a trade now would probably bode well for a wild card challenge, no trade no chance IMO.
