I really like

the moves at the top of the lineup by Maddon. It makes me feel better that it is L-R-L-R-L-R, rather than three out of the first four being left. Also, even though BJ has struggled with the bat over the last month his OBP is still great and with the dip in power makes more sense for him to be higher.

by JRays on Jul 24, 2008 6:11 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also

Got that info from the heater and they had another post about Price pitching last night

allowing seven hits (including a homer) and three runs (two earned) over six innings. He also walked two and struck out six and didn’t get a decision as the Biscuits lost in the 10th inning.

and a comment that espn.com had reported the Bucs lowered the price for Nady.

by JRays on Jul 24, 2008 6:13 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A RHP we can get to

Like to see a big inning or two, and some jacks from Pena.

by kurby on Jul 24, 2008 6:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why arent the rays interested in George Sherill, he has veteran experience and could really help our bullpen in late inning games…the O’s are looking for a shortstop and Reid Brignac would be a great give up for a quality bullpen player now

by RAYS44 on Jul 24, 2008 6:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sherril's got a career K/BB just over two and is an extreme flyball pitcher

he’s gotten away with not giving up a lot of homers in the past because he’s faced more than his fare share of lefties. he’s been exposed this year as a full-inning guy.

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 24, 2008 6:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Whatever

Wheeler isnt the problem in our bullpen, and if we could get another guy who produces like he has we should consider ourselves lucky

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

our problem is not having a bullpen ace.

the fact that we don’t have a good #4 or #5 reliever is much less pressing.

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 24, 2008 6:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

2 things

1. Yes, the need for bullpen depth is pressing. Case in point the other night while down 3-1 to Oakland, Maddon had to choose between using Howell on back-to-back nights, or ceding the loss….He chose the latter.
2. Wheeler has been very effective this year. If you’re projecting Street into the future, of course he will be better. But Wheeler has done just as well this year, and doesn’t play in a park with 9.5 miles of foul ground (Oakland has been a pitchers park for years)

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i wasn't calling wheeler a 4 or 5, nor infering he was the problem (although he is a bit overrated right now)

he’s probably a 3 league-wide and currently #3 on the Rays

1/2 Howell/Balfour (still don’t know if Balfour’s for real real or just for real)
3 Wheeler
4 Percival

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 24, 2008 6:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

can you elaborate on the situation in #1? thanks.

and to get snarky about #2, I thought the editors of this site outlawed using reliever ERA or quoting half-year stats…

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 24, 2008 6:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I didn't use ERA

His WHIP is lower as well. And if you can look past a miserable ‘07 you will see Wheeler has been a highly effective reliever for years…most of it done in the Houston bandbox.

Howell was warming in the pen the inning before Miller came into the game. Not coincidentally, the Rays had runners on base. As soon as the potential to tie or bring the game within a run ended, he sat Howell and proceeded to warm up Miller. The rest is history, as he had Miller try and work in a non-loogy situation and fail miserably.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 7:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

totaly agree

with the depth of the pen…when I was watching the game I thought the same thing.

by JRays on Jul 24, 2008 7:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

"I didn't use ERA. His WHIP is lower as well." -- no thanks

in 2005/2006, Wheeler’s K/BB was about 9/3; this year (i know) it’s 6/3. he’s also giving up more flyballs which will lead to more homeruns. his BABIP this year is .180—thanks defense. his FIP and xFIP are both around 4.50. Street’s 2008 K/BB is 9/2.5 and he’s been a bit unlucky in the HR/FB department. His xFIP and FIP are about 3.50.

in that situation, you’re saying the Rays were down two or three with a couple innings left? the difference between a crappy pitcher and a really good one in that situation is not as large as the difference between a good reliever and a great one in a really important situation (couple of runners on with a one-run lead in the ninth, for example.)

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 24, 2008 7:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They were down 2

with 9 outs left.

And for the record, Percy/Howell/Wheeler/Balfour have blown a combined 3 saves between them this year (Zero for Wheeler), so it seems the Rays have more of a problem letting the game getting out of hand, than they do protecting small leads.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 7:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think I responded to the wrong thread

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 7:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think I remember hearing that they didn't want to trade him

because they don’t really have anyone available to fill his role.

by JRays on Jul 24, 2008 6:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Honest opinions....you think we are going to make any trades

We have a week left and I really don’t feel like they are going to make a move. You have Price who could come up later on and pitch so they dont HAVE to do something in the pen or even the back of the rotation and it seems like the price for a bat is to high.

by JRays on Jul 24, 2008 6:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think we make minor trades on 7/31

But I’d be shocked if we made any sort of a splash

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’d rather the Rays keep the big gun prospects intact. If that means no moves, so be it. But if they don’t make a move, oh man, there will be some angry folks doing a lot of second guessing and armchair GM’ing.

Sternfan1 has a week to prepare his ranting material. Don’t fail me.

well shoot they need to make a splash! gomes and gross arent cutting it for me…i went to two of three a’s games and neither gomes nor gross did anything special…gomes especially! the only thing good he did was hit a homerun…im actually over pena too….he either hits big or doesnt hit at all

by RAYS44 on Jul 24, 2008 6:48 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gross is more of a defensive specialist so you aren’t really replacing his role and I am no fan of Gomes but he didn’t have a bad series vs the A’s.

by JRays on Jul 24, 2008 6:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hate using a three game sample size

But Gomes had a very good Oakland series: .400 .571 1.000

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 24, 2008 6:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He was responding to the initial post

Which used the most recent series as an example

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 6:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

and the bad year is still only a 97 OPS+

and the 155 PAs of a bad year shouldn’t put a ginormous dent in Gomes’ track record (which isn’t studly, I realize)

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 24, 2008 7:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Then tell that to Rays44

Not RJ….He even tempered his post by saying ‘I hate using a three game sample size’. Are you more interested in talking baseball or playing ‘gotcha’?

It wasn't like it was some grand insult.

Why the Royals continue to have Gathright, Pena and Gload on their roster is beyond my understanding. It’s almost like watching the LaMar era D’Rays all over again.

One break begets another

But Meche is at 63 pitches already.

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

This is an important question

Why do they keep putting mascot mode in NCAA Football? Why not use the time to make a decent Campus Legend mode instead?

They don't even finish games before they release them

The show has so many funky bugs in it. Even a HUGE bug from last years version they don’t even bother to fix.

They just know people will buy EA Sports games as long as sports continue to exist.

Actually I was mistaken

The show isn’t an EA Sports game.

Even so… I enjoy it myself but it has a lot of silly little bugs.
