Nady and Marte to NY Yanks
Looks like we can cross Off Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the list. The Pirates will receive right-handed pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, right-handed pitcher George Kontos, left-handed pitcher Phil Coke and right fielder Jose Tabata in return.
Seems to me the Yankees got a steal as Nady is signed for the next year. I guess that also eliminates the need for one Barry Bonds as well. The Yanks filled the 2 biggest holes on their team and probally pulled off the blockbuster trade of the summer.

is their a reason why Briginac is not playing today in AAA?

Cause we sent Zobrist back down and he's a SS too?
Bleh, yanks didn’t give up that much. Tabata is overrated and no one else there is a great prospect. The fact that they didn’t get Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy is a joke.

Moves now or none at all
I think now is the time we get Murton or Blake or we do not make any moves at all.

So it didn't take Hughes or Kennedy
And the best prospect they gave up was #9 on the BA list. Guess the Pirates were being reasonable after all.

I should say their BA list

Yanks give up next to nothing. WTF are we really doing letting these types of guys we need get away for discounts to other teams?

Street/Murton or Bradley/Eddie G?
Whats more important at this point? Massive upgrade in the pen or in the lineup is the real question

I hate the fucking Yankees!
WTF is Tampa waiting on? The time is now! Not next year or the year after. I say now that Nady is gone, go get Milton Bradley &/or Casey Blake. I’m personally not sold at all on Matt Murton. I don’t think he’s that good of a player, much less a hitter. I think Bradley or Blake would be much better. We could use another decent RP as well.

This is why you're not in charge
It actually is about next year and the one after that and being competitive for a long, long time.

Like I said in the GDT
I am really excited about our rotation for the next 2-3 years
Kazmir
Shields
Price
Garza
Niemann
Davis
Jackson
Sonny
Hellickson
I know pitchers are never locks, but come on, we can afford to trade at least 1 of those guys.

Sure they could. They could also wait until the offseason and use those same chips to address long-term solutions instead of rentals / short-term solutions / poor value, leaving the team in even better position for sustained success.
Longlorious.

So we shouldn't try to improve our chances to win this year?
by Dbullsfan on Jul 26, 2008 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Surely...
I imagine they will make a move.
There just aren’t many upgrades available whose value exceeds the value of the pieces they’d give away.
I’m more upset about not getting Marte than Nady. I think the step up to Marte is much greater than the RF improvement.
I still see a Casey Blake move coming.

I don't see the huge downside for going for a guy like Teixera.
Yes we already have Pena but I don’t buy the whole, his value diminishes a lot because he isn’t playing the field.
I don’t know the talks but I would guess that a deal like Jackson, Hellickson, and Nowak/Johnson (depending on whether they want a guy now or with some upside)
While on the surface it seems like a lot to give up, we will get 2 first rounders when he walks and our rotation next year and a couple years down the road will be Kaz, Shields, Price, Garza, Davis/Sonny/Niemann and we still have Barnese, Houser and other options down the road.
Just because we never thought we would be in this position this season doesn’t mean we shouldn’t go for it. I am sure there are a bunch of GM’s wishing they had our group of arms to deal with.
by Dbullsfan on Jul 26, 2008 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
The deal the Yankees gave up was about equivalent to trading away a package of Mason/Hammel/Nowak/Jennings. We could have easily traded that away without hurting this team this year or next. The only thing of value from our end would have been Jennings, who’s injured half the damn time anyway (as opposed to Tabata, who looks more like a bust every year – his body just isn’t developing right, and he can’t hit).
Vogt early, Vogt often.
by Brickhaus on Jul 26, 2008 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a bad analogy
Your comment may have been on the original deal – but 3 of their BA top 15 makes it a bit stronger package than that. 2 AAA pitchers with majors experience, a top OF prospect (like Jennings), and another good performing AAA starter looks quite a bit better than you’re characterizing it. Switch Talbot for Nowak and that’s more on the mark..

I don't remotely understand
How you could be mad that the Rays couldn’t pull off a trade for Rauch when all the Nats got in return was Bonaficio, and you’re not mad when the Yanks trade for Marte AND Nady for four players who are inferior to Bonaficio.

Do you see any second baseman sitting around our organization?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 26, 2008 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
THAT'S MY POINT DIPWAD
We COULDN’T have pulled off a Rauch trade because we have no 2Bs. THIS is a deal we could have easily pulled off without hurting the present or future of the organization. The Yanks got two useful players for table scraps and a prospect who hasn’t lived up to potential. We easily could have done the same. EASILY.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

We easily could have done the same. EASILY.
In theory, yes. I’m not sure what you’re expecting here, I’m not going to overreact because of the Yankees making a move. Our packages are better than nearly any other team could offer, this is obvious. Whether the Rays feel the cost now is worth the benefit is something I’m going to trust, after all they haven’t exactly made stupid deals in the past.
We have what, five days until the deadline?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 26, 2008 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
To add..
What if the Pirates valued someone like Tabata a lot more than they valued players on the Rays?
Just because we think someone isn’t good, or BA doesn’t have them highly rated, doesn’t mean that a team does not value those players above others.
Similar to the Rauch deal, if the Pirates thought highly of someone than there may have been very little the Rays could do.
Playing the prospect game isn’t a perfect science. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes.

Street to the Dodgers for third baseman Andy LaRoche "and change."
A new rumor regarding A’s closer Huston Street seems to surface daily, and Friday’s speculation du jour, courtesy of a scout working Oakland’s game against the visiting Rangers, had the A’s sending Street to the Dodgers for third baseman Andy LaRoche “and change.” LaRoche and Street both participated in pre-game warmups with their respective teams Friday night, though, so if a deal is indeed made, it wouldn’t be announced until late Friday night or at some point over the weekend. LaRoche, a 24-year-old right-handed hitter, is batting .214 with two homers, three RBIs and a .333 on-base percentage in 26 games with Los Angeles this season. Also said to be interested in Street, among others, are the Reds, Rays and Brewers; those same three teams and a handful of others have reportedly kicked the tires on the availability of A’s lefty setup man Alan Embree. —Mychael Urban

I get the feeling this will be the case yet again.

anyone got a scouting report on Tabata?
Nady is solid, but overrated. At that price, Bay might be get-able. Any chance Huntington just wanted to trade Nady before Bay, thus the reason he said Bay was not going to be traded?
Where does Nady play in New York? Right field, pushing the awful-fielding Abreu to DH?
by Sky Kalkman on Jul 26, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Realistically, Bay should now be off the market.
But the Pirates could look at an OF of McLouth, McCutchen, and Pearce if they moved Bay. So they still easily could. But Bay don’t really fit the Rays well. He’s not really a RF. Seems chasing Bradley if you’re going to go big makes a bit more sense – though you could see him as an older Dukes. But are you looking for good citizens or good players when going for the playoffs? Don’t know that Bradley’s knee could hold up in RF everyday, but you don’t really need it to. And since he’s a rental, he shouldn’t cost more than Bay.
I know all here are concerned about the long term implications of any deal, but the simple fact is this is the Rays best – only – playoff shot to date. These guys will exact pain in what has to be given up – I’m thinking Davis would have to be included in either deal. But the Rays are (hopefully for you) now transitioning to a period of regular contention. Money will be spent. Contending until deep into September, or better still making the playoffs, changes the whole picture. Money will flow in – it’s already begun. Have to ask yourselves if this a moment to capitalize on. Nothing is guaranteed in the future, but the base is there.
Think of the ride the Indians have been on in the past few seasons. Came close in ‘05, looked like a prospect based team that was about to break through. Then they collapsed in ‘06. Then reached the promised land in ‘07, now struggling again and trying to find the next path. The Rays may be somewhat better situated then the Indians were, but that’s not for sure. And both the Sox and Yanks are mixing in prospects now, though the Yanks are a bit short on the position player side of things. But both have significant financial resources to fill gaps, with large payroll reductions in their immediate futures. It’s a real transitional moment for the Rays. Gotta decide whether to go for it now or not. And nothing you do guarantees success – but it sure seems like the offense needs help, and perhaps the pen as well. Perhaps time to part with some SP pitching depth.
