- The Rays keep coming up just short on trade talks. One team they were in discussions with are complaining about their deliberate pace and their insistence on taking several names completely out of the discussion. One FOT is hearing his boss saying that "they come in thinking they’ve cracked the code, that this offer is the one that’s perfect. Maybe it is, for them." The Rays seem perfectly willing to go with what they have, especially given the progress of Rocco Baldelli. The team seems more focused on the pen and even there has options like bringing up David Price in September.

Think about it. As much as you might want to see the Yanks not make the postseason, they’re nowhere near as annoying and loathsome as the Sox and their fans. Furthermore, they’re easier meat than the Sox would be.
I actually sort of admire the job Joe Girardi is doing with the Yanks this season, and am rooting for Mussina too. Given how much and how long I’ve hated the Yankees, it galls me to have to admit this.

It makes perfect sense.
A good pitcher, who can come in with no one on gets 3 outs and doesn’t allow a run to score most of the time. Our best relievers are free to pitch in high leverage situations.
