Manny being Manny....to the Rays?

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/07/might-sox-try-t.html

Guess manny did something and was diciplined and, to fight back, took himself out of the lineup.  No way the Sox trade him to us directly, but i wonder if we could swing a trade for him to the team he gets traded?  He'd be great for a 2 month rental, especially if the Sox eat his money to trade him.  And especially because i feel there would be no way he'd sit out the 9 or so games we have left in the Red Sox series.

Thoughts?  It would never happen, but never say never.  Although that will give us 2 corner outfielders that just act like they don't care for the most part ;).

top reason elijah dukes isnt a ray: thinks 9=8 is just a math problem, he gets arrested for the rays telling him he has the green light to steal, with attendance improving there are too many girls for him to knock up, he gets fined too many dollars for referring to us as still the d-rays and cant afford that and child support for his 15 kids and his 10 guns.

I doubt it, Atlanta would ask for Top level prospects

from mlbtr....

After discussing Mark Teixeira, the Rays have decided to pass, not wanting to move Carlos Pena to DH. (sounds stupid? Just move Tex to DH….duh).

Tex and Pena are both great Defensive 1B

Maybe it is just me but the thought of not getting the best bat on the market

because we cant use him in the field is stupid. Say we have 2 of Evan Longoria, we arent going to not play one because they are both great on defense, we will still take advantage of his bat.

by Dbullsfan on Jul 27, 2008 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

not saying it isnt but so far the market doesnt appear to strong

I know Tex is a lot better than Nady or Blake though. I still think Ejax and Niemann + lower levels would be enough. Maybe Ejax and Hell boy, but even that I would strongly consider. I repeat we have a million pitchers at some point we will need to move a couple, why not now when we have a shot to win a ring.

manny isnt going anywhere not this year and not in the next 3 years

remember a couple of years ago when he asked boston to trade him 2 years in a row and he is still there now

i would bet differently

He is abysmal in the field. Theo is completely aware of this. Once he can find a decent corner replacement, he’s not going to pick up Manny’s option.

This is no guarantee. Manny is worth about three wins above average these days. Take away two wins for fielding (this is generous) and he’s a +1 win left fielder. Ryan Church is better. So is Johnny Damon.

As a DH, he’s a bit more valuable.

ugh, damn asterisks

“This is no guarantee” referes to Theo finding a decent corner outfielder.

They will probably trade him to a basement team...

so he can be on a crap team for the next year or so.

how much do you think he is worth as a FA?

wouldnt that be something amazing if the red sox dont pick up his option and he signs here! lol sox nation would jump over here i bet

longo=ROY. friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Rays=WS champs 08!

Plus if we could get another team to turn him...

If he’s truly mad at the Sox FO what better way for him to get back at them (except going to the Yankees) then to come play for the Rays and help lead them to the pennant..he’d be on a mission to get back at them….

Only as a DH

But Manny playing for the Rays would just be more of Manny Being Manny.

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Ramirez disgraced Bostons hierarchy

While I’d love to see his RH bat in the Rays line up, Tampa doesn’t have the resources to get this guy. He’s one of the best 3 RH hitting bats in MLB to go along with Arod, Puholjs. I’d love to see him in Tampa Bay.

There will be a bidding war for Manny next season. Boston will NOT pick up his options!

i think the rays could get him for 2year deal around 25 million if he was interested in playing here

i would love manny if he would come here just to piss off the red sox to join us and help us by being a RH DH and winning us a ring

That's not enough money

Manny is going to command at least $15 mil/yr on the free agent market. Someone who is able to sign him to say, a 4 year deal, might be able to knock-off a couple mill a year off that contract, but anybody who manages to get him at 12.5 mil/yr is getting a straight-up bargain.

by kericr on Jul 28, 2008 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Rephrase because what I said doesn't make sense

Manny will sign at least for 15 mil a year. A shorter contract will draw closer to 20 mil, giving him a 4 year deal might be able to knock-off a couple of mil a year off that contract and bring it closer to 15 mil, but anybody who manages to get him at 12.5 mil/yr is getting a straight up bargain. Someone will overpay for his services; probably the Yanks.

by kericr on Jul 28, 2008 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

with Manny, please notice that his offensive performance over the last 1.5 years isn't all that amazing

Yes, 2006 matters some, but it makes a lot of sense for a 36 year old outfielder to lose some value. And Fenway overrates his skills.

2007: .296 .388 .493
2008: .298 .398 .524

Don’t get me wrong, that’s good. But it’s not best of the best any more. He’s a top 25 hitter. Who needs to DH. Not worth what he’ll sign for.
