I'd say it's fair
Cotchman is decent offensively and is under team control until 2012. The pitcher they gave up is decent at best, and they’re going to get 2 picks if they don’t resign Teix which makes it a pretty good deal if they let him go. The Angels have the ability to sign him though, so to me it looks like they gave all of that up to get early negotating rights, and in that instance, it’s an average deal.

You know what the worst part of this statement is?
I remember a certain someone declaring openly and outright that Baldelli would be up in the Bigs before Price, and how everyone and their mother told him that he was wrong, and an idiot.
And now he’s also going to be something else: right.
by kericr on Jul 29, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It wasn't an outrageous statement.
I cannot believe we’re going to risk Baldelli’s sub-10 minor league LD% at the major league level. That’s amazing…

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What it a saber team?
Because we definitely don’t fit the mold of the 2002 A’s. We are built on pitching and defense.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 29, 2008 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're mistaking saber teams are purely OBP teams
Teams that use sabermetric analysis heavily are primarily the A’s, Padres, Indians, Rays, Red Sox, ect.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And the Blue Jays?
I seem to remember hearing about a little trade those teams pulled off this past offseason?

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 29, 2008 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uh, nobody is revising history.
Keith Law WAS his stats guy, once Law left they backed away from it. Look at the men Ricciardi is surrounded by, all scout types.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uh, yeah you are
And how much of his hiring decisions are an attempt to create a new identity for himself independent of ‘Sabermetric GM’ is open to question…esp after he saw the way Depo was run out of LA
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 29, 2008 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Riccardi’s first order of business was firing all the scouts and bringing in his own guys, with little knowledge of the game, but guys that were serious number and stat analysts. The results haven’t been pretty.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I'm not
WITH Law they were very much into stats, but as Law went so did the statistical dependence. I’m not sure how that’s revisionist history whatsoever.
Also check out Oakland’s defensive rank, I believe it’s first, which is what started this whole “debate”.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand Sabermetrics has moved past OBP
The new market inneficiency is finding players who can’t hit, and trading your most valuable players for them.
OK, thats not fair…but neither is suggesting that Kevin Towers is a saber guy and Riccardi isn’t

The Jays philosophies. They aren’t commonly mentioned to me as a team that is dabbling in stats anymore by scouts. 6-7 teams are: ARZ, BOS, SD, PIT (somewhat), TB, OAK, and CLE.

If Maddon is willing to blow a game to prove a point to Coco Crisp
Then he should be willing to blow a game by replacing positional players who fail to drive in runs when men are in scoring position with other players. This team needs a punch squarely in the balls, and they need it very soon.

The Jays OF thought it was out so stopped playing. Umps didn’t call anything so Hinske just kept running. Later replay showed it was out.

No way that happens
Manny will end up as a DH somewhere. I wouldnt mind having the Righty bat as our DH. But it is Manny, no way our Front office pays $20 mil for him, He will not end up with the Marlins because he can not play LF as it is. Add to that the huge field in Miami and you have a recipie for disaster if you make him the LF down there.

i think something is wrong with bj's eyes
just a hunch, maybe he needs contacts or lasik or something….
when he swings he is late much more often than what he should be and well frankly i think his “knowledge of the strike zone” is more of a product of not being ready/able to swing the bat (maybe vision?)

His power isn't
But look at his BABIP breakdowns, they’ve regressed.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But that isn't what regression to the mean really is
by tallyray on Jul 29, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Regression would occur
If he was playing at his expected levels and his overall numbers were slowly declining. He’s doing something quite different, like falling off a cliff.
by tallyray on Jul 29, 2008 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
to massive suckitude?
it may or may not be his eyes. maybe its shoulder. maybe its his mechanics. all i know is when he decide to pull the trigger he is not doing very well. if the mean is the skill of a rookie league player then we have some problems
by matthan on Jul 29, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's still throwing well though.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
im not doubting his strike zone knowledge, or his defense
im talking about his ability to swing the bat and make good solid contact with a baseball.
by matthan on Jul 29, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I was referencing his shoulder.
Unless it was his non-throwing shoulder, I don’t recall.

you have to see the ball
isn’t that the first thing they teach you in like tee ball?
by matthan on Jul 29, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's making contact
Not swinging. Unless he’s blind and doesn’t even see a ball coming in his general direction.
by tallyray on Jul 29, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i was just hypothesizing
bad eyesight usually means you swing a lot less compared to swinging at bad pitches. it also means you swing a lot later than usual. i actually went through the same thing in high school ball. quite a few major leaguers have said the same thing.
now is this what is going on with bj? who knows? it could be an injury or mechanics also.
it also important to note he typically hits far back in the zone to begin with.
bj is still playing great when compared to other players. but that doesn’t mean he is 100% or if he is capable of playing at his true ability. my guess is he can play better.
by matthan on Jul 29, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
my guess is he can play better.
That’s a fact.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 29, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'm talking about that this isn't his real ability
i think he is a far better player and we should forget these numbers once whatever piece is broken gets fixed. once that happens these numbers would be totally irrelevant to projecting the real upton

With the Red Sox appearing to be disappointed with Lugo, and the Marlins looking as if Hanley will cost too much to keep long term, could H.Ram ever be dealt back to Boston for a package of a few of the Red Sox prime prospects? Buchholz, Ellsbury, Masterson?

its not bad
but that was my point about obp and his eyes. he swung at two pitches in these two plate appearances and he fouled both off. you can make the point he isn’t swinging because he has great plate coverage or on the flip side you can say he isn’t swinging (or making contact) because he can’t see the ball.
