Ban Sternfan1?

I'm normally a big advocate of listening to an array of opinions, and admire both passionate and objective arguments.  I have also had my fair share of disagreements with others on this site, and feel strongly that if I weren't forced to listen to divergent opinions, I would never learn anytihng new.  If I have offended anyone in the past, let me take this opportunity to sincerely apologize.

However, Sternfan1 is sucking away the joy I find in frequenting this site, and turning what was intelligent discourse into an ESPN message board.  It would be one thing if he said "The Rays are going to continue to suck until they do X," but rather he just says "The Rays suck", and seldom if ever backs his arguments with facts.

I propose that RJ ban Sternfan1 until August 2, 2008 at 12:00 a.m.  This will allow the rest of us to discuss deadline deals, and the fallout therefrom in a rational and intelligent manner.

Need evidence?  Here is why, courtesy of the culprit himself.

Here's another:

Rays will finish 4th

Sorry to say

by sternfan1 on Jul 28, 2008 9:54 PM EDT

I could go on and on.

I'm not saying that I feel Sternfan1 should be forced to parrot back the opinions of the admins.  Rather, if he has a different point of view, I would simply asked that he be forced to express his opinion in a well reasoned, and above all, civil manner.

Poll
Should Sternfan1 be banned until a day after the trading deadline?
  • Yes, it would be nice to discuss deadline deals in a more civil manner.
  • Ban him for a few days? Try a few years!
  • I don't agree with him, but don't think banning is appropriate.
  • I agree with Sternfan1. Ba Ba Booey!!!

It is ridiculous to ban someone, when they can just open up a new account and do the same thing. Get over it and move to the next post.

In the last year the overall quality of the commentary on this site has depreciated considerable, but I still know who I like to read and who’s comments I respect, I don’t think there is anything we can do about this problem given the success of the team and the growth of the site.

There are ways to get around this

Good ones. Clever ones. Ones most people wouldn’t be able to circumvent.

by kericr on Jul 29, 2008 1:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Why ban him when

everyone already knows everything he says is trash. Just don’t feed the trolls. I rarely agree with him, but once you start banning people for voicing their opinion it can get out of hand pretty quickly.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

Ignoring him would be the normal way to go

Except that #1 there is no ‘ignore feature’ user on this site and #2, I’ve already been ignoring what he says when he tries to talk about the Rays. Unfortunately, not everybody else does, and when he gets responses, you ‘feed the trolls’.

Honestly, if everyone ignored him, he’d go away by himself. “Ignoring” him is not a reasonable option.

by kericr on Jul 29, 2008 12:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Honest question

Is there any way to ask Blez if an “ignore” feature is in the works? I’ve already seen trolls kill one SB Nation Board (Minorleagueball), I don’t want to see them kill another.

We wouldn’t be having this discussion.

He made that movie

I watched it with my girfriend at the time, and walking out of the theatre she went on and on about how ‘awesome’ Russel Crowe was in the movie. When I said I thought Phoenix was amazing, her response was ‘I don’t like him, he is creepy’, and thus failing to seperate her emotions of the role he played from the inspired preformance he delivered…needless to say she wasn’t my girlfriend much longer.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 29, 2008 12:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He was that entire movie

Russell Crowe sucked. The CGI stuff with the lion and Joaquin Phoenix made the movie watchable. He is a great actor – nailed Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.

by Jason Collette on Jul 29, 2008 1:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I completely agree

Phoenix is a fantastic actor. Walk the line was incredible, and I’m still surprised he didn’t win an award for that one. However, that character itself was pretty creepy.

And Russell Crowe has always been an average actor, although most of the movies he has been in have been great. I love 3:10 to Yuma…but that could also be because Christian Bale absolutely kicks ass as an actor.

I dont think civility is preached by this board

not that I have a problem with it, because Im thick skinned. But the admins on here take pot shots all the time at players, coaches, and everyone else. This is a blog site, and by nature credible analysis is sometimes sacrificed for 8th grade slapstick humor

Again, I dont have a problem with it. These kind of sites for better or worse give me the type of up to the minute info I cant find anywhere else

I am definitely in favor of well reasoned explanations, and not having grabage constantly spewed all over the place just to get attention. That can seriously drive people away form here

by blazinrayz on Jul 29, 2008 1:05 PM EDT   0 recs

yeaa

not that I have a problem with it, this is a blog site. You guys can say things like FUCK Glover and Hamilton should sniff the foul line on his way to 1st. All Im saying is aslking for the man to speak civil might be much

by blazinrayz on Jul 31, 2008 1:43 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Context Much?

1. Both of your examples are from GDT’s, which they have repeatedly said are ‘game on’ for profanity.
2. The exact comment you refer to was “F@ck glover, miller sucks worse”. In that context, you could easily replace the F-word with ‘forget’ and have the same meaning. Hardly controversial. Nice try though.
3. The Hamilton comment went as follows:

Did he snort the foul line aftewards in celebration? Okay that’s inappopriate, sorry, I do respect Hamilton as a man for getting his life in order, but I’m sour that he only got the pro life back in order once he left.
So RJ made a passing comment about Hamilton’s drug use and then PRAISED him for getting his life in order. I’ve seen/heard much worse about Hamilton (though I don’t really appreciate any of it).
4. These ‘controversial’ statements netted a grand sum of 2, count them, 2 responses (likely because neither was targeted at another individual on the site) I’m sure if either of them had been taken to task they would have gladly recanted.
5. It’s also worth noting that you recorded zero comments in either of the threads you cite, making it highly likely you simply did a site search in an attempt to stir the pot.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 31, 2008 2:17 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't want him to speak civil

From my perspective there are two things that should be off limits on the site: personal attacks and trolling. In all honesty, up until this thread was created, that is absolutely all I ever saw him do on this site. He said things that were simply too extreme to be opinion, and he personally attacked people who disagreed with those ‘opinions’. I mean, look at my posts; over the last couple of days I’ve made fun of Heath Ledger’s death, joked about Tony Saunders arm exploding (sort of), and posted a link to one of the most genuinely horrifying pictures I’ve seen in the last year. I’m by no means civil, but I’m also not so much of an asshole to be genuinely disruptive to the progress of a thread. His trolling has managed to derail GDTs, that’s no easy task when you have 1000+ replies and close to 50 users on at once viewing them.

Granted, it seems like over the last couple of days something’s clicked off in his head and he’s bringing more to the table, and I’ll give him credit for that, but it shouldn’t have taken an open forum calling for his ban to make him realize (directly or indirectly) that his act was tired. I also wouldn’t be surprised if after a short time he reverts right back to his antics which is a cause for concern. At this point I’m on the fence because I don’t want to hate the guy, but there are a hell of a lot of smart people on this board with a broad swath of opinions. There are communities on the internet where the intelligent simply do not tolerate the idiotic. This doesn’t have to be one of them, but that doesn’t mean that this community should just openly accept members whose sole purpose is to aggrivate and enrage.

by kericr on Jul 31, 2008 9:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't agree with what he says

but I will defend to the death his write to say it.

by EminenceFront on Jul 29, 2008 3:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Also, fight to the Death?

Little extreme, considering we’re not talking about the government. I’m all for free speech, but wouldn’t take up arms if some jackass in section 301 gets ejected for profanity.

This site is not bound upon the principles of the Constitution of the United States of America. Just for the record, I voted for the few days ban and not the permaban. The poll indicates that there is a growing intolerance to his shenanigans, and two thirds of the votes show that some form of punishment for his trolling is in order. It’s by no means scientific, but I seriously doubt that anybody here is trying to game it.

I will say that the smartest thing I’ve seen sternfan do so far on this site is to stay far far away from this thread.

It's from Family Guy

But outside of teh interwebz, an individual’s rights are worth it IMO.

I say don't ban him.

Why? The guy has an opinion, albeit an idiotic and an opinion that is unsupported by fact. I was a bartender for 2 years, if we were watching a game, and a guy said “the Rays suck.” I wouldn’t kick him out of my bar. I would serve his drink, and allow the patrons who are pro-rays to berate the man. If he chose to leave that’s his deal. But, don’t band the guy. This isn’t China!

by thebaddancingraysfan on Jul 29, 2008 6:01 PM EDT   0 recs

It's not the opinion that bothers people

As much as his method of bringing it to the table. A better analogy would be a guy in a bar screaming “Rays Suck” in other patron’s faces.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 29, 2008 6:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Alright, let's roll with that.

If he stands up and says “rays suck” into patrons faces, that is one thing. But, is just a guy who pathetically wants to get under people skin. That reminds me of my nephew at my dinner table, when my nephew doesn’t get anyone’s attention he screams and throws punches until people look at him. Bottom line: Don’t give this gay the satisfaction. Let him be.

People keep saying things like 'ignore him'

That’s the problem. In an ideal world, he would be ignored, he’d realize that nobody is listening to him, and he’d go away.

But this isn’t an ideal world. This site is growing in popularity, and there will be new people who come here looking for smart Rays talk (and yes, there will be more assholes and trolls). Hell, the people here can’t seem to ignore him. RJ responds to him, Bendix responds to him, others respond to him that haven’t caught wind of his act. Those people respond, a flamewar starts, and it disrupts the thread and derails the topic being discussed. For all the joking that goes around on this site, I’m surprised how rare threadjacks really occur, yet he seems to have mastered the art with the simplest of trolling techniques. The guy should write a book on it, he’d sell millions of copies.

As I said in a previous thread, he has managed to clearly violate a terms of service agreement (yes, this site has a TOS) that was designed to be impossible to violate by being intentionally vague. His posts are akin to spam, and are completely irrelevant.

by kericr on Jul 29, 2008 6:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You wouldn't have to kick him out of your bar

To be honest, if the senario you described were a real-life one, Sternfan would probably be taking a trip to the hospital after being jumped by three or four drunk rays fans.

by kericr on Jul 29, 2008 6:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The man has a point.

I have seen it, not from Rays fans. To be honest, I was the only one at the bar wanting to watch the Rays game. No, I have seen this from Yankees fans.

people have a right to free speech -- but you can ask them to leave your private property

there are rules to this site and any other website out there. don’t follow them and you can be asked to leave.

the right to free speech is more appropriate to any one person’s right to post at their own blog and not have it shut down.
