An American League team source just called from Toronto (where the Rays are playing): Says Brignac and pitcher Jeff Niemann are the names coming up most often. Another source -- not with a team -- says the Rays will not part with the following three pitchers: David Price, Wade Davis and Hellickson. But a push from other teams could change that if the Pirates are eager for Hellickson, as it seems they are. Niemann, 25, is a 6-foot-7 guy capable of throwing hard, but he is not seen in the same class as the other three even though he is BA's No. 7 guy.

Also in there...
2:27 p.m.: Neglected to mention this earlier, but Tampa sure is making things sound as if something will get done. The Pirates? Not so sure but, as the notebook mentioned earlier today, about 50-50.

Reporter: Hey guy on the street, I see that you’re wearing Rays gear.
Random Fan: Yep, proud of it!
Reporter: So…what do you think the Rays are going to do for the trade deadline?
Random Fan: The Rays will not part with the following three pitchers: David Price, Wade Davis and Hellickson.

hmm
as a pirate fan, but first and foremost a baseball fan, do you think the pirates are asking for too much by not just settling on a deal centered around Niemann? The Rays organization is so top-heavy with pitching prospects, i don’t see why they wouldn’t at least CONSIDER parting with hellickson or davis in a deal for bay, and maybe grabow thrown in.

No Way for Hellickson or Davis
I don’t see whats so wrong with a Niemann/Perez or Brignac/Perez deal? Maybe even throw in another mid level prospect. Niemann could be a staple in your rotation for 5+ years. Whats wrong with that?

agreed,
people are undervaluing Niemann b/c he’s in our system and overshadowed by some very elite level guys. i also think people are overvaluing Bay, and ESPECIALLY Grabow.

Did you happen to notice the Splits?
Did anyone happen to see Bay is hitting .193 and slugging .349 against left handers this year. Seems to me like the Pirates would be getting the better end of the deal. We really do not need another player who cleans up against right handed pitching. We already have Gabe Gross,Eric Hinske, Cliff Floyd and Jonny Gomes are all doing better against left handed pitching this year then Jason Bay.

I doubt they include Grabow for that
I think they’re hoping they can use Grabow to leverage getting a better centerpiece.
The other part of the equation we keep forgetting about is that the Pirates FO thinks they can sign Bay long-term if they keep him. It may or may not be true, although if they’re smart, they’ll trade him away now so they have an excuse to not give Bay (one of those ‘old player skills’ players who tend to fade at a relatively young age) a bad contract.

The Pirates pitching sucks
We have Jackson, Sonny and Niemann and almost need to get rid of 1 or 2 of them. If the Pirates dont get a deal done, they FAIL. Jackson and Sonny would both be better in the NL central, and probably by quite a bit.
I dont see any reason why we would need to deal Davis or Hellickson to Pittsburgh, between Sonny, Niemann, Jackson and Brignac a package of 2 of them should be enough

In the past, Friedman has made deals nobody saw coming. Last year, Friedman sent third baseman Ty Wigginton to the Astros for reliever Dan Wheeler. Maddon was asked if the scenarios discussed by Friedman on Wednesday morning were deals that have been speculated upon in the rumor mill.
“This one’s been under the umbrella of speculation,” Maddon said. “I think I read it somewhere.”

update?
according to the insider on pittsburgh sports….
“3:57 PM. The frame work of the deal is close. The hold up is Neimann. Pirates still targeting him. Other teams in discussions. The offers for Bay are not insulting. A lot of insiders feel the Pirates should settle take the Rays offer of Hellickson and Brignac if they don’t include Neimann.”
this is obviously just a rumor site, but it’s interesting to think that the rays might be holding back on giving up neimann rather than hellickson

A little taste from the "Heater" blog .... (why to stay here)
Mostly agree with the previous BUT--would you, for example, trade Upton, Brignac, Neimann, Gomes for Bay?? I absolutely would as Brignac probably will never make it up to Tampa with Bartlett/Zobrist ahead of him, Neimann would satisfy a big part of Pittsburgh’s pitching needs and it is doubtful he will ever make it here and Gomes is nothing more than “collateral packaging”-the key here is Upton and we are basically swapping Upton for Bay and to me, that is a no brainer..
Posted by: dick | July 30, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Call me corny, but I like the team we have. This is why I hate the Yankees and the Red Sox.
Posted by: Brian Jahna | July 30, 2008 at 12:47 PM
Why isn’t anyone mentioning Baldelli in the talks? hear me out first… Can we agree that Bay is essentially Baldelli with maybe a little less speed? Or you can say that Baldelli’s injury hampers that. So maybe they’re pretty much equal when Baldelli’s healthy? If we trade him now while he’s producing in the minors and include one of our stud pitchers would that be enough? We would then lose Baldelli’s salary creating room for Bay’s salary even though Bay’s is more. I’m not saying a straight up trade…but include maybe Brignac and a pitcher, maybe Morlan? how could the Pirates decline that? That may seem steep for us, but, if Baldelli doesn’t come back Friedman would be the master of another great move.
Posted by: Mark | July 30, 2008 at 01:08 PM
Maybe they can toss Jackson in the deal too.. I’m so tired of watching him bounce the ball in front of the plate, groove 90+ miles per hour fastballs over the heart of the plate which get crushed, and allowing the 8th and 9th hitters in the lineup to get on base. This kid never seems to learn from his mistakes.
Posted by: Marc | July 30, 2008 at 01:19 PM
Hellickson, Neimann, Ruggiano, & Gomes.
Or we switch out Hellickson or Neimann for Jackson or Sonny.
We keep Price and Davis, giving us solid call up options should one of our starters get hurt.
We do NOT want to give them Upton, that just moves to hole in the lineup from RF to CF.
This move is more important than for the filling of a hole, it tells the team, “look guys, we’re behind you, now go get it done.”
THAT would be a huge boost to these guys’s psyche.
Side note, Jayson Werth would be a nice addition failing Bay, but I’m feeling good about this.

i don't think so...
i don’t see the pirates giving up doumit, they’re really high on (and why not? he’s cheap, and is putting up big numbers from a position that’s hard to get offense from). I’ve heard him and mcclouth are about as close to “untouchable” as you can find on the roster.

Bartlett doesn't have that much value. Brignac would give similar production for the time Bay would be here as Bartlett while he adjusts.

We need to get production from DH and RF and some more from 1b and you won’t notice Bartletts lack therof

the only question is how far behind is his bat. He was clearly over matched earlier this season.

I dont think Brignacs defense is on par with Bartletts...
but thats just my opinion. I feel that Bartlett is very important to this team. As can be see when he was on the DL.

I've seen Brignac more in person than I've seen Barty
but I watch all the games online. I would say there is little difference between the two. Barty has a bit more range and Brignac has a bit more arm strength.

Niemann and Brignac for Bay would be a steal for the Rays....
Brignac isnt gonna see SS here in the near future, and Niemann wont be a starter for the Rays. Bay would immediately be the best offensive hitter on the team, and he fills a need…for this year and next. If we get Bay, and dont have to give up Price, Davis, or Helly…consider it a win.

Are when Bartlett's contract is up, we can find a replacement until Beckham is ready...
People sweat Brignac, and I dont see it. Outside his Cal League numbers, he really hasnt done anything that impressive offensively. And the Cal League is a joke for hitters.

I would guess the reason he still projects well at the plate
is that when he makes contact it is very solid. He drives the ball very well to the gaps and hits a lot of line drives. He was leading the IL in doubles at the break despite his poor average. I’m not saying he is as good as Longoria but the ball jumps off the bat in a very similar way. If he can get better plate vision and not chase he could become an above average hitting SS along with an above average defensive SS

5:34 p.m.: Rays’ charter is in the air, and it is a three-hour flight from Toronto to Tampa, so chances of an announcement while the team is at 35,000 feet seems remote. Stuff like this invariably gets run by the manager. Also, just want to throw this out there: The Rays are looking for relief and, although I never have heard them connected to John Grabow, it certainly seems possible - pure speculation here - that the same thing could happen with this deal as what happened when Brian Cashman approached the Pirates about Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte last week.

6:03 p.m.: A source on the scene in San Diego, where Arizona is playing, reports quite definitively that the Diamondbacks are not a player for Bay. And this is not speculation. One wonders how many suitors there actually are beyond Tampa and St. Louis.

5:59pm: Jayson Stark reports that the Rays and Pirates haven’t had much dialogue today, and that talks have slowed. The Pirates have backed off just a bit, but may want to see what happens with Manny Ramirez in case they can get the Red Sox interested.
