He will go to the Red Sox. And he will probably stay for a while. I am hoping they keep the pissed off Manny or we will get screwed.

Must identify a way to help their trading partner in a deadline deal. For the other two, they simply cite a need and allow other teams to find a way to help them.

Sources told Baseball Prospectus’ John Perrotto that Manny Ramirez is on the verge of being traded to the Marlins for three players.
Perrotto says one of them is top outfield prospect Mike Stanton. Baseball Prospectus isn’t the best source for breaking news, but Perrotto is a veteran reporter for the Beaver County Times and is pretty trustworthy. Still, it’s worth noting that Ramirez is still in the game for the Red Sox.
ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports that trade talks between the Pirates and the Rays regarding Jason Bay have slowed.
Bay was included in Pittsburgh’s lineup tonight, while Reid Brignac started for Triple-A Durham. Stark says one reason talks may have slowed is because the Pirates suspect the Red Sox will go after Bay is a Manny Ramirez trade gets done or maybe even as part of a Ramirez deal. Jeremy Hermida would be a nice return for Bay.

Good news
Red Sox now want Stanton, Hermida AND Ryan Tucker
Marlins aren’t too dumb, if the price is that high, Marlins wont get Manny and the Sox will have no room for Bay making us the clear front runners.
Please keep trying to make them overpay, Sox.

I’m hearing that a multi-team deal involving Jason Bay and the Florida Marlins is in the "final stages." This could involve the previously in-place dealings involving Manny Ramirez as reported by our own John Perrotto. Joe Frisaro of MLB.com thinks that Bay could end up in Boston, Jeremy Hermida in Pittsburgh, and prospects flying every which way. My sources agree, though I will update as details become clearer.

I'm sure this would never happen but hypothetically speaking but
would a team have to forfeit a game if they used a player who had been traded. Like if the papers got sent in for a Bay trade and he finished the game with the Pirates?

What if
Marlins get Manny
Pirates get Brignac and Niemann
Rays get Bay
Red Sox get Dunn
everyone is happy and gets what they want/need. Power aside, I would much rather see Dunn go to Boston than our man Bay and it is really starting to look like Manny is leaving Boston this time.

The Rockies informed all the teams interested in reliever Brian Fuentes on Wednesday afternoon that they would decide late Wednesday night whether to put Fuentes on the market. All those teams also were told exactly what it would take from their club to get Fuentes if the Rockies opt to trade him. At least three of those clubs - the Mets, Phillies and Rays - have told the Rockies that, because of the price, they’re out of the Fuentes derby.

8:52 p.m.: I am aware of the three-team scenario that has been floated in some circles - some more definitively than others - that would get Bay involved in a three-way trade between Boston and Florida that would send Bay to the Red Sox, Manny Ramirez to the Marlins and Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates. But I just spoke with a source in Miami who threw water over the whole thing, even the more commonly reported Ramirez-Florida straight-up suggestions. Waiting for independent confirmation either way.

so would we put Murton in RF and Bay at DH?
If we got Street, Murton and Bay, print the playoff tickets. Howell, Balfour, Wheeler, Percy and Street is sooo lock down. Then if we would just call up Salas to replace Reyes/Miller/Hammel…....
We would lose a lot of the farm but we could actually get all 3 and keep our top 3.

Manny will not go to an NL team
How would Boston justify his defensive value. The NL GM would say if you think he is good defensively then why trade him? He can not DH in the NL and they dont want to trade him to an AL team for fear it will come back to haunt them. This is a bunch of bunk. Manny isnt going anywhere unless it is the waiver wire. If that is the case Theo Epstein is dumber than I thought he was.

Let me rephrase … I guess that would make the Marlins FO dumber than I thought they were. None of this talk would be happening if Ortiz was still on the DL. Manny would be the DH up there now all the sudden they realized how shitty of a fielder he is and that they are overpaying for two DH’s and they should save money, now they are trying to dupe the Marlins into taking Manny. Mike Jacobs was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Mets after six innings.
It wasn’t a situation in which he’d normally be pulled, so there was either an undislosed injury or a trade. Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus said he’s heard talk of Jacobs being part of a deal for the Giants’ Bengie Molina.

John Perotto reports that discussions on a three-way trade between the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates could also include Jack Wilson and John Grabow.
Manny Ramirez to Florida, Jason Bay to Boston and Jeremy Hermida to Pittsburgh would be the foundation of the deal. Perotto, who said earlier this evening that a deal sending Manny to Florida was on the verge of getting done, doesn’t follow through with that here. However, he says that talks are alive and that multiple variations have been discussed. In one version, the Red Sox would get Wilson from the Pirates and give up Jed Lowrie. In another, the Marlins would acquire Grabow in exchange for pitching prospect Ryan Tucker.

From BP
The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.
Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

ESPN’s Peter Gammons believes the three-team Manny Ramirez talks will stretch into Thursday and that a deal is still unlikely to be completed.
It’s been 40 minutes now and no one has joined Will Carroll in saying that the deal is done or even all that close to being done. Skepticism is still warranted.

I think you undervalue the marginal benefit of the first playoff appearance in franchise history
As well the the way a big deadline deal could energize the fanbase

Did you only read the heading of what I wrote?
No player is the end all be all….but he certainly helps our chances of making our first playoff appearance more than any minor leaguer not named Price
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 30, 2008 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would agree with that to an extent
but I still believe that we are going to see a few of the guys begin hitting better over the coming weeks. And while I like Bay, I think it would only be a good trade if we don’t overpay. Otherwise, I’d be fine with trying out Rugg’s until Baldelli gets here, and then roll the dice.

I'm sure our offense will improve
Unfortunately, the Yanks just filled a gaping hole with an above-average producer, and the Sox aren’t going to continue to play this poorly. I expect both Boston and NY to play better than us from here on out. How much better, and whether its enough to catch/surpass us remains to be seen.
3 games is bigger than it looks…especially in a 3 team race. But at the same time, we defintely have every reason to be sweating right now.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 30, 2008 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It will be tight until the end
but at least we have them beating up on each other as well.
I still think the Yanks have pitching problems. And I am thankful that the Sox have Manny being such a pain that they cant stand him even with his production. Otherwise, Boston is pretty damn solid.

interesting..
i’ve been lurking for awhile and i noticed some of you guys saying the pirates trading for an outfielder doesn’t make sense….but it seems to me like NH is just doing what you guys have done up to this point: stockpiling talent. we’re not trying to build a “team” that can win right now, we’re looking to stock pile as much talent at the minor league level as we can, to hopefully see who develops and then deal the rest (presumably if we’re ever contending) for legit players. saying the trade is “stupid” just because you think we should settle for a sub-par pitcher and a shortstop prospect who your organization is ready to give up on and has never developed properly is ridiculous, take off your homer glasses and look at it from an unbiased perspective.

I wasn't indicating that he was.
I simply answered the question of who plays short after Jack Wilson leaves.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 30, 2008 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's beside the point...
i don’t think the management is really concerned right now with replacing jack wilson at shortstop…we’re conceding a losing season this year and hoping to compete in 2010. Yes, our pitching is terrible, but in the trade with NY we got a couple of stop-gap pitchers that can hopefully at least slow down the bleeding while we wait for legit prospects to come through….also, i’ve heard whispers that if jack wilson is involved, and heading to boston in this trade that jed lowrie would come back to pittsburgh, a better prospect than brignac.
by bucco on Jul 30, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
how do you figure
they have the same tools, neither of them walk and Brignac plays better defense- Lowrie has just gotten off to a better start…
by Hazleton Jason on Jul 30, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lowrie is two years older than Brignac
And has an OPS of .793 in AAA, Brignac’s is .718.
BA rankings: Brignac 39, Lowrie 73.
Hey, if we put negative signs in front of those numbers you’d be right!
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 30, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
compare what they've done in the majors
lowrie is .284/.341/.392 compared to brignac who hasn’t shown he can hit major league pitching….i’ll concede that lowrie isn’t necessarily a better prospect, but he’s certainly a better option than bixler, and definitely not a big step down from brignac, if any. all i’m saying is this trade isn’t a complete coup for the red sox, and the pirates aren’t stupid to be rejecting the rays offer in favor of this one…
by bucco on Jul 30, 2008 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
and when it comes down to it...
i just feel like if this trade is legit (which at this point, who knows? it could all be bs) that you guys can’t blame it on the pirates just making the “stupid” decision to pick this offer of the rays offer…i don’t necessarily agree that the rays should mortgage their future for jason bay, hellickson looks like an incredible prospect, and most likely will be a solid mlb pitcher, i just think at the end of the day you might have to admit that the rays just got outbid.
by bucco on Jul 30, 2008 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
When did Niemann become a sub-par pitcher?
Also, if the three-way deal were to actually go down, it looks like the Pirates would be getting a very good deal, better than the Rays should offer. It just doesn’t make any sense at all for the Marlins.
by raysrule07 on Jul 30, 2008 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Over-valuing our prospects?
Are we just thinking the sun shines out the arses of our prospects? Come on, Bay would be a solid contributor and I’d hate to think we miss out (to Boston no less) because we wouldn’t get rid of our 3rd (yes, third) best pitching prospect (Hellicky).
Hellboy and Brignac seems like fair value for Bay.
