The Reds and Rays talked Wednesday night about a deal that would send Adam Dunn to Tampa Bay. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, those talks haven't yet moved beyond the conversation stage. But that conversation is expected to resume Thursday morning. Clubs that have spoken with Tampa Bay believe the Rays don't want to rush into anything as long as Jason Bay remains an option. But they now have Dunn on their plate as an intriguing Plan B.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater...
...I’m just saying that I have seen A LOT of Dunn over the years and I guess I am just over him. His aloofness. His cement shoes. His lack of emotion. But, I have to admit, the thought of him in a Rays uni is kind of exciting. And yes, I know I am contradicting myself. I don’t know, I just don’t see how this fixes our problem against lefties.

I guess you and I are just different in that regard...
...I much prefer fiery players if I am going to have to root for them day-in and day-out. Watching Dunn strike out over and over, then sheepishly lumbering back to the dugout, maybe glancing in the stands at the hot dog guy or some cleavage in the box seats just kills me. That said I will obviously still be pulling for the big dummy if we get him.
It's dangerous to judge players and their feelings based on
Field demeanor. Everyone “wants” the classy individual who takes nothing away from his opponents, but when the media doesn’t portray a quiet player as such he gets labeled lazy or simply uncaring about his performance. I don’t know Dunn, you may, but looking at his performance records I would very much want him on my team.

I agree, I don't know Dunn personally...
...so I have no idea what his true motivations are, but hasn’t there ever been a player whose body language or “field demeanor” has just rubbed you the wrong way? I know you’re a huge stats guy and all, but don’t you ever let your emotions sway your feelings for a player? If a guy strikes out I don’t want him throwing a temper tantrum, but maybe a frown once in a while would show me that at least they cared. Dunn is a big meathead who just sort of bops around like a doofus. I like this deal better if Dunn is batting 6th or lower.
His job isn't to show anyone he cares, though.
His job is to play baseball. I think it’s really unfair to think poorly of someone because they don’t react in the manner you wish they would. You don’t know what his thought process is like.

ESPN’s Peter Gammons says a Manny Ramirez deal is not done, in part because the Pirates aren’t yet satisfield with their return for Jason Bay.
Gammons talked to Ramirez’s agent, Scott Boras, who said he’s yet to be informed of anything. Still, Gammons seems to be changing his tune on a deal getting done. Whether or not the Pirates are involved, Gammons believes Ramirez will be moved to the Marlins following his remarks Wednesday about the Red Sox not deserving him. The proposed three-team deal has Boston getting Bay and John Grabow from the Pirates and Pittsburgh picking up Jeremy Hermida and prospects. The matter apparently won’t be decided until just before the deadline.

An AL source told the Palm Beach Post that the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates have tenatively agreed to a three-team deal.
The source said a tentative agreement was reached about 10 p.m. Wednesday, or essentially the same time Baseball Prospectus reported it. Other sources have since said that a deal isn’t done, but since his is a new report saying it’s agreed to, we’ll add it to the mess. The Palm Beach Post has the Marlins getting Manny Ramirez and a prospect from Boston, the Red Sox acquiring Jason Bay and John Grabow from Pittsburgh and the Pirates acquiring Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker and two prospects from Florida. That makes this the first report to “confirm” that Tucker is in the deal. He’s a significantly better prospect than any of the three pitchers the Pirates just acquired from the Yankees.

In an article updated at 11:50 pm EDT, SI.com’s Jon Heyman says that a deal between the Marlins and Red Sox for Manny Ramirez is close and that the teams have relayed their dealings to the commissioner’s office.
That goes along with what Will Carroll wrote earlier. The Red Sox will need Bud Selig’s approval since they’re expected to pick up the $7 million that Ramirez is still owed as part of a deal. Heyman says it’s no lock that the Pirates will be part of the trade, though Pittsburgh is clearly in Boston’s ideal scenario. The Red Sox want Jason Bay, but they could try to mix in a different third team. Heyman adds that the Dodgers were willing to part with Matt Kemp for Ramirez, but that those talks are on the sidelines now.

the only way boston losing manny hurts the rays is if they pick up bonds
sure it sucks we lose out on bay, but this scenario makes boston a weaker team. the problem is most of us only look at the rays and if we have improved. even if we stand pat while this trade executes we still are better off post deadline than we were predeadline in terms of playoff probability.

In a zero sum game
You are absolutely correct. The expected contribution from Ramirez, as well as what he’s done to this point in the season is better than what they should expect from Bay. So in that sense, swapping Bay in for Manny makes them a weaker team.
At the same time there are personal issues at play, and it may be naive to expect that Manny will produce like he has thus far this season. So in that respect, a Jason Bay Red Sock may outperfrom a Manny being Manny down the stretch.

There is also no gurrantee that Jason Bay will be an expert
at dealing with the green monster, canceling out your defensive theory. Maybe he handles it just fine, but he wouldn’t be the first player to struggle in left field over there.

I just agree that there is a bigger human element to the game than the majority of people here want to believe or admit. It’s all about stats, stats, stats 24/7 and that’s fine. I can dig on that, too. But, sometimes I just think it gets a little out of control and that doesn’t make me dumb or you wrong or anybody “cutting edge,” it’s just my opinion that things like team chemistry and other “immeasurables” matter.
They matter, but only a marginal amount.
It’s not a chicken or egg argument, if you win, you have great chemistry, if you lose, you don’t.

Also, have you seen the pitchers who he’s gotten “hurt” against this year? King Felix (twice), Joba, Harden, ect. Gammons has a whole blog about it. You know why he’s still against those guys? Because the advanced scouting report on him is that he can no longer catch up to the fastball. He’s trying to hide that fact.

maybe he’s never near the league lead in RBIs because he’s hit leadoff or 2nd his entire career, Smarty Jones. Jeter has a ton of RBIs in the postseason and his AVG with RISP is VERY high. His numbers in the WS are incredible. Hes hitting like .500 career in all star games. He is CLUTCH = SABR heads hate him

You have to use your brain a little bit and project their abilities in similar situations. Jeter’s career BA with RISP is .311. It’s .316 overall. His numbers in the postseason are not nearly as good as everyone thinks they are. He didn’t used to suck, but he sucks now.

He’s hitting .308/.373/.473 in the playoffs
He’s hitting .315/.386/.459 in the regular seasons
An .845 OPS for both. He’s a good hitter, but the exact same hitter in the playoffs he is in the regular season. Not clutch, just a good baseball hitter.

Why is it so hard to understand that when a player feels pressure, their adrenaline picks up and they perform differently. Some positively, some negatively. Those who perform best in these situations, are clutch. Of course the AMOUNT of opportunities will vary from player to player and team to team, but that doesnt change the FACT that EVERY player performs differently from the next in the clutch. Only robots wouldnt understand that, because of course you cant feel adrenaline

it is too hard to track the ability to be clutch, because their is no constant to measure it against. Different teams, different spot in the lineup, different AMOUNT of opportunities for RBIs and clutch hits, so it makes those of you who live and die by number tracking lose your mind i.e. disregard the fact that producing RBIs and performing in the clutch are skills

League average players at 1B, COF and DH are cheap and easy to fill there’s a lot of money coming off the books next year, and there’s a decent core of good players. Add a Sheets or Burnett type to the rotation and that’s an 80-85 win team without giving anything up. Teams with that kind of payroll don’t need to tear down and rebuild.
