I'm thinking this thread through noon, and a thread from noon on, assuming no deals go down. Eh?

First!
My vote is no trade. Rocco will be up soon and Price as well in mid-August.
Should be an interesting day
I think we will get a couple of deals done. Starting with a ML bat, whether it be Dunn, Beltre, Ibanez, or a lesser name I’m not sure. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see us make a minor league deal or two. One guy I see getting moved is Joel Guzman. Maddon really seems to like Ben Zobrist as a utility guy and if anyone is coming up as a back-up utility type it will be Zobrist. Guzman is also blocked in the long term by Longoria. I could see us trying to move Aybar and call up Guzman but I think Maddon likes Aybar’s versatility. We could also move a guy like Elliot Johnson who has reached his ceiling with the franchise.
He loves writing out signs like that.

Just a quick question
If someone were to swap us out in the potential three-way trade with the Marlins, what prospects would you guys be willing to give up if we got Manny Ramirez?
Keep in mind: according to most sources, the Red Sox are eating the last guaranteed year of his contract.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.
I'd rather give up less and get Bay than trade the farm for Manny
not to mention Boston would be stupid to trade Manny within the division

As for Adam Dunn
It’s a good idea if the trade for Bay falls through. Rotating him and Rocco could give us enough options against LHP to get us the rest of the way.
TAMPA BAY RAYS: 2008 CITRUS SERIES CHAMPIONS
I thought we were looking for a guy that could consistently hit Lefties.
Getting Gomer’s mentor doesn’t really help us much considering Dunn makes Gomer look like 1994 Griffey in the field and they are both 3TO guys

Actually, yes...
Those are all-star TTO numbers.
RISP by K/PA, K/AB, Slash
Dunn
2008: 28.5%, 37.2%, .256/.384/.593
Career 25.2%, 34.2%, .226/.413/.479
Pena:
2008: 29.9%, 38.0%, .239/.359/.489
Career 25.4%, 32.1%, .244/.371/.485
Longoria:
2008: 25.6%, 31.1%, .236/.318/.491 SSS alert
That seems like an awful lot of strikeouts from our potential 3,4,5 or 4,5,6. Maybe better than GiDP, but I get pretty frustrated when a guy cannot put bat on ball with RiSP. In this scenario a lot of times a single is all you need which is reflected more so in BA than OBP. If we are looking for someone that can get a hit I think there are better options than an all or nothing Left-handed (which we don’t need) slugger that is just as likely to walk or strikeout as get a hit with a man on second.

Sucked in
Can’t believe a middle aged business owner like myself has been sucked into this blog! Former Bay area resident now living in Chi with the only 3 sons in Chi land to wear Rays stuff every day. Blog is great. Still don’t beleive Bay to Sox goes thru. Also don’t believe Rocco will help this year (hope is a better word, but hope is not a good strategy). I do believe that the Rays are very good and will be for years to come. Just bc we have an abundance of pitchers in the future, don’t give them away now. If a trade is made, we must receive value. I want to win this year, but also next. I certainly wouldn’t give any of our top 7 for Dunn or Top 10 for Beltre/Ibenez etc. These prospects will be just as valuable in the off season or next trade deadline. Not saying don’t make a trade, just don’t give it away just bc you have it. Bay is worth any of our guys from 4 down.
Welcome to the blog!
Yeah, I think RJ lines the web pages with some sort of addictive additive, otherwise I can’t rationally explain why I keep coming here to torture myself with Statistical Overload.

Here’s what I know about the status of this deal, as of this morning:• An official of one of these three teams placed the odds of this getting done today at “50-50.”
• Multiple sources have said that outfield prospect Mike Stanton is not in this trade, although Boston asked for him and Pittsburgh has been insisting on a prospect of his caliber, in addition to Jeremy Hermida and other prospects.
• Despite reports that left-handed reliever John Grabow would wind up in Boston, indications are that he would actually go to the Marlins if this trade gets done.
• The status of Marlins pitcher Ryan Tucker (recently sent back to the minor leagues to be converted to the bullpen) remains uncertain. Tucker, according to a baseball man who has spoken to the teams involved, is still a name that’s “in play.”

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Reds have "expressed the most interest in" Gerald Laird.
Why would the Reds be buyers?

TAMPA BAY RAYS: 2008 CITRUS SERIES CHAMPIONS
I think they are looking for a catcher for the future
The Rangers are a great place to look for that.
The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that the Mariners have made J.J. Putz available in trade talks. The newspaper notes that the Red Sox and Mets “have popped up as possible trading partners” for Putz, who would likely draw plenty interest throughout both leagues even given his injury concerns. If Putz is traded, the Mariners could reconsider their plans to move Brandon Morrow into the rotation.

Bay will struggle in LF in Fenway
No one is as good there as Manny. I think the defensive upgrade is somewhat mitigated by that. Manny also tends to kill the ball down the stretch and in the playoffs. Who knows about J-Bay? How will he adjust to the media circus that is Boston? If he starts slow, what happens with him and the fans? Manny is a crowd favorite, and I think there are a number of Sawx fans who still feel that way.
Wouldn't the games away from Fenway even out, even if Bay does struggle?

DC is OK
Tons of self important D-Bags, but there is a lot to do. A lot of young people here, and a ton of my friends from school live here. The Nats games are OK. The product on the field is subpar and the stadium is generic. If you can try to go to Camden if you haven’t been before. It crushes the Nats stadium in all categories except concessions.

Not so much
the point of getting rid of Manny in the east. Its more, we’ve been linked to Bay for a while now, and have Boston sweep under our noses and dangle Manny around just leaves a sour taste.
By the way, have you people been doing this all night?
Per Heyman's blog:
“More and more, the Rays are looking at Adam Dunn as a realistic possibility. He isn’t the right-handed hitter they have been seeking, but he would bring them needed power. He leads the majors in homers over the last five years (198) and this year (32). He also hit two Wednesday night, boosting Reds GM Walt Jocketty’s position.”
by knoxvillerayfan on Jul 31, 2008 9:57 AM EDT reply actions
regardless of whether he's the right hander we've been seeking, he's a solution at DH,
use a solution at RF to get our right handed batter…
Wait, you like Dunn
He is one of my fav players. It surprises me when the anti-stats guys like him though.
yeah, i like dunn
obviously he has his pitfalls, but what he’s done, and what he can do for us outweighs those.
by davidsmarch on Jul 31, 2008 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed
If he can DH (which I think he’d have no problem with), he is an absolute game-changer. If you bat him third, the only time you won’t have guys on base in front of Longo and Pena is when he knocks them in.
Per Pittsburgh PBC Blog
9:55 a.m.: When one looks at this from the Tampa perspective, it is easy to see how the Rays might feel some additional pressure to part with one of those golden prospects and get this done with the Pirates: The Rays, Red Sox and Yankees are in a tight race. If the Red Sox get what they want (Bay), that is not good for the Rays for that reason alone. The Tampa link there is the first I have heard of Reid Brignac being in the untouchable category, by the way.
Sorry for all the posts, google reader started beeping like crazy!

Is losing Brignac that bad?

Cards moving Lohse?
per Jayson Stark
Here’s one of the most surprising names to pop up on the “available” list in the last 24 hours—Kyle Lohse. Officials of two teams that spoke with the Cardinals report that they’ve been offering to deal Lohse if they can get back the right package. The Cardinals have been looking for both a bat and a bullpen arm. And apparently, they concluded they didn’t have the prospects to get both. They got Chris Carpenter back from the disabled list Wednesday, with Adam Wainwright a couple of weeks behind. And they have no assurance they can re-sign Lohse because he’s a Scott Boras client.
So Lohse could dramatically alter the starting-pitching market Thursday if the Cardinals can find the right taker. Among the teams still looking for a starter: White Sox, Rockies and Yankees.

i still think we are severly undervaluing Niemann
the fact that we have Price, Davis, Hellickson, and maybe even McGee moves Niemann down to our 4th-6th best pitching prospect. but, those are ace type guys. how many teams have multiple ace types in their system? not many. in many systems Niemann would be arguably their best pitching prospect, a top 3 guy in many many systems. we shouldn’t undervalue him, or what he’s done this year where he has improved across the board, just b/c we have an exceptionally deep system, we still have to get value in return.
We're trying to move him, but most teams want Price/Davis/Hellickson instead?
TAMPA BAY RAYS: 2008 CITRUS SERIES CHAMPIONS

About McGee....
How much did his prospectus REALLY fall off with the injury? His name has not seriously come up, but in many cases, TJ surgery has actually helped pitchers, so why are we not really dangling him out there to a team who is looking for someone maybe 2 seasons down the line, a true rebuilding team like the M’s?

I saw Wieters last night
He is the freakin man. 2 doubles that he absolutely smoked. Tillman looked great in the first then struggled. Live fastball, but he had trouble locating the curve and it was a bit loopy.
Wieters was a man-child. He was taller and thicker than anybody on the field. He should be the number 1 prospect in baseball on at least one list next year.
I think so
Wieters’ bat would be all-star quality at any position, but he plays a premium defensive position. His arm was great although he is a bit tall. I’d just take the sure thing. Which I think Wieters is more of because any start Price or Kershaw’s careers could be over.

Surprised there aren't more predictions.
I think the Man-Rammer deal goes south and with no other legit deals out there, the Pirates “settle” on whatever it is we’re offering.
Regarding the rumored Manny Ramirez three-team trade, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com quotes “one source with knowledge of the discussions” as saying that “if anyone thinks this is a slam dunk, that’s not the case.”
Rosenthal notes that the basic framework for a trade remains in place, but “the teams still have yet to agree on the players in the deal” that is said to revolve around Ramirez, Jason Bay and Jeremy Hermida. Contrary to previous speculation, Rosenthal reports that Marlins prospect Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton are not part of the trade. He adds that if the Ramirez deal falls apart, the Pirates will turn their attention to trading Bay to the Rays.

Manny isn't going anywhere
I just can’t see it. Too much risk for all parties (except the Pirates)

10:53 a.m.: Just got off the phone with a couple people - non-Pirates - and there seems to be this growing sense that it is the Pirates really dictating this process. There are too many teams and too many moving parts to imagine that they are outright playing one deal off the other, but they probably are as close as they can be to doing exactly that. The Pirates’ thinking, according to one, is that they want two high-end types and one or two others, depending which direction they turn. Obviously, giving up Grabow makes for the higher number.

Competing GMs say the Mets’ Omar Minaya is “itching’’ to do a deal. And it’s no wonder with the Yankees stealing the show across town and the competing Marlins close to possibly adding superstar Manny Ramirez. However, a lot of Mets people want to hold onto their top prospects, including outfielder Fernando Martinez, and pitchers Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz and Robert Parnell. Seattle requested “two premium prospects’’ for outfielder Raul Ibanez, and Mets people don’t like that idea. Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation, which is looking iffy lately, especially with Duaner Sanchez’s radar gun readings down.

The Marlins can cross Ivan Rodriguez off their list of catching targets, though they did make a concerted effort according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark. They obviously couldn’t part with a veteran reliever; in fact they just acquired one in Arthur Rhodes.Stark says the Marlins are still looking for catching help. He believes Bengie Molina will stay put, but Gerald Laird, Ramon Hernandez, Gregg Zaun, and others are still out there.

“The Rays’ superb play has surprised them a bit, so they didn’t expect to be buyers at the trade deadline. They hoped to contend by 2009 or perhaps ‘10. The Rays appear to be adjusting to their new role as trade-deadline buyers, but with Jason Bay possibly going to Boston in the Manny Ramirez deal, it appears that Adam Dunn may be their best shot. It is believed the Reds are seeking some of the Rays’ vaunted young pitching, including Jeff Niemann and Jeremy Hellickson. Tampa has refused to include big shortstop prospect Reid Brignac in the Bay deal. So presumably he’d be off-limits as well for Dunn, who’s lefthanded and doesn’t fit Tampa quite as well.”

that's not even close to true,

they're coming,
he seems to have really improved his defensive game recently. i’d expect him to put more emphasis on offense soon. as a SS though, you know his value is mostly defense. having a great offensive SS is a huge commodity.

Right, that's why he has value...
Some players fulfill their projection, others dont. All I am saying is that Brignac has never been a great hitter at any level outside of the Cal League.

but was considered just an OK defender. he seems to have payed more attention to defense, letting his offense slip somewhat.

he seems to occilate,
he’s improved his offense, now he’s improving his defense, and his offense is somewhat lacking for AAA, next i expect another offensive improvement. he does seem to be having a bit of a down offensive year, my guess is that that remedies itself next year.

from 05 to 06
while he was considered a hitter, but poor defender. i would think he has payed more attention to fielding lately, which is why BA now considers him our bet fielding infielder, letting his batting slip. but i would also expect that’s correctable.

by Peter Bendix on Jul 31, 2008 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Right...good for his age..
That’s why he is still a good prospect some project to hit for power as a MLB SS. BUt he is still a lot of projection. That’s all I’m saying. Not Tim Beckham, low minors projection…the type where he is young for his league, and will he mature into a more powerful hitter.

Elvis Andrus? No
Lowrie? No, he was a couple years older at every level
Moustakas (if he sticks)? His #s are about the same as Reid’s were at that age
Brandon Wood? Anothe guy that probs isn’t a SS, but his numbers aren’t that much better if you look at his age and the fact that he’s in the PCL.
