A's Unlikely To Make More Trades
By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 11:00am CST]
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the A’s are not likely to make a trade today. Olney’s source puts it at 1%. So, looks like Justin Duchscherer and Huston Street can rest easy.

2 questions
if we trade for Bay, shouldnt we move CC to CF and Upton to RF? That would make the most sense to this team. This isnt the old Rays anymore, and CC needs to stop being so stubborn. He grew up in an organization with no authority so he choose to make himself a #2 hitter and LF. If he was in any otehr organization they wouldve been putting his ass in CF and batting leadoff and hammering it into his head what he needs to do to succeed there. It makes our lineup and defense “fit” much better.
2) If we trade for Dunn should we give Floyd the axe? And then proceed to call Baldelli up for Gomes? I think that will make us MUCH better. a RF/DH triangle of Dunn/Baldelli/Hinske along with OFer Gross on the bench
answers
#2 – Floyd and Gomes gots to go

CC can't move to CF
for some reason unknown he has said he won’t play there and will whine very very loudly.

i already suggested that
and no, CC never said he won’t play there, he said he prefers right field. if asked to play CF, i am SURE he would comply.
by davidsmarch on Jul 31, 2008 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I dont care anymore
Just like when Delmon Young felt a culture shock when he went to Minnesota and saw their history and saw their former stars around the clubhouse and put his ego aside, thats exactly what would happen if CC went to a team like that and they told him to go to CF and bat leadoff and occassionaly put a good bunt down. His ass would do it. He just thinks hes the king here, and that is because he is the best player to ever play for this franchise
Delmon Young changed at all? What?

we would move CC to CF
so that we dont have to move Bay to RF. Upton would be a upgrade in RF for us, and the idea is that a player as fast as CC who has 7 years of ML experience in the OF could eventually adjust and make the transition.
From Baseball Prospectus
As of 10:30 ET this morning, the teams involved in the Manny
Ramirez deal have taken a bit of a break. The holdup continues to be
sorting out the prospects, specifically which ones the Marlins will
get and will give up. The framework, agreed to early last night, has
expanded a bit, including John Grabow and, in some iterations, Jack
Wilson. The Marlins have switched up on what prospects are available
and which aren’t. It looks like slugger Mike Stanton is definitely out
and that Ryan Tucker is out unless the Marlins get a "plus prospect"
such as Justin Masterson in addition to Ramirez. This one could go
down to the wire.
by Jason Collette on Jul 31, 2008 12:17 PM EDT reply actions
If the Red Sox have to give up a Masterson and Ramirez for a Bay and Grabow
Is that really bad for us? Does this help or hurt their team?
Thats what I am thinking
even if you say Manny and Bay are even. They would still be losing prospects for no upgrade
no but it looks like griffrey might go back to CF and swisher and konerko will split time at 1B

Unfortunately Carl has admitted he doesn't listen to what his hitting coaches have told him.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 31, 2008 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
that's where I come back to the belief
that if he was on a team with history he would listen. It’s no fault of ours, but 18 year old superstars like Upton, CC and Young had huge egos and came to the MLB version of the Bad News Bears. If CC went to the Cubs and played their under Lou at this point in CCs career, Lou would break his ass in to the leadoff hole and CF position real quick. And CC would TRY to learn in Chicago. I believe that
Upton needs to be removed from this.
He gets paired with Dukes, Crawford, and Young way too much.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 31, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Upton, and CC have tamed their egos
to different degrees. I have no beef with Upton. I hate when my friends say he doesnt try or he takes bad angles or some other BS

Per Jon Heyman
Ebattled superstar Manny Ramirez has approved a trade to the Marlins, SI.com has learned. While the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates are still negotiating details of the mega-trade and nothing has been finalized by the teams, one major hurdle has been cleared by Ramirez accepting the deal ahead of time, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The Red Sox approached Ramirez in advance of their negotiations, and got his OK. Ramirez signed off on the paperwork, contingent upon the two $20-million team options for 2009 and ‘10 being dropped. The move will set the stage for Ramirez to become a free agent this winter, assuming a trade can be completed by the three teams.

LOL!
How can you say Gomes has been unlucky this season, he’s been on the roster ALL YEAR grrrrrrrrrrrr
This:
PrOPS, a statistic created by J.C. Bradbury, is used to predict future OPS using batted ball data. It’s helpful in determining which hitters have been unlucky and which have been lucky, basically it’s not the next step from LD% to BABIP, but the step after the next step. PrOPS confirms what we just established: each of our DHs are due for some improved results. Aybar’s PrOPS is .789, Gomes’ is .822, and Floyd’s is .853. Yet when these progressions happen become the most important factor, it’s possible, but heavily unlikely, that none of them progress until next season.
You’re not going to agree, so I don’t know why I’m even commenting, but the first time you throw out some stupid SABR head shit you’re being boxed. No flame wars today.

It now looks as if the Rays won’t make a deal of any kind between now and the deadline. According to sources who have spoken with them, they’ve backed off on Adam Dunn because he makes their lineup too left-handed, and they’ve been informed by Pittsburgh that Jason Bay is likely to go somewhere else. The Rays and Colorado had already agreed Wednesday that they didn’t have what it takes to get Brian Fuentes, if the Rockies decide to trade him at all Thursday. And that looks less likely all the time.

I don't understand the line-up too left handed reasoning.
Adam Dunn > Gomes, Floyd, Hinske, Gross, Aybar
I don’t care if he is a lefty or not, he is still better.
For some reason Floyd won't go away...
But Dunn over Floyd/Hinske/Gross may not be as great as what the Reds are asking for

well maybe those teams are too right handed.
correct me if I am wrong but aren’t there more RHP in the league than LHP. So in a sense wouldn’t it be better to have a left handed heavy line-up.
So does Joel Guzman get a shot?
If no deal gets done we still have Gomes, Floyd, and Aybar all of whom suck.
We're going to make a trade...
I’ve got a huge feeling, we’re going to make something happen
The latest team to make a run is Toronto. It seems doubtful that the Blue Jays would give up the three-prospect package Pittsburgh is looking for, almost certainly starting with outfield phenom Travis Snider. But Toronto and Pittsburgh were still talking as of Thursday afternoon.

A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Manny Ramirez says the deal is close to dead. Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7M to cover Ramirez’s contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9M and two prospects for Jason Bay.

More from Jon Heyman
The Mariners’ agreement to send reliever Arthur Rhodes to the Marlins may be giving the Yankees hope that perhaps Seattle will also relent and agree to trade Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees. Word is, Hernandez was on the table for weeks. Perhaps the Mariners will also relent on Washburn. The Yankees have generously offered to pick up the rest of the $14 million remaining on Washburn’s contract through 2009 while sending them a middling prospect. Seattle has been calling around to try to beat that, but the suspicion is they won’t. So maybe the Yankees will get Washburn after all.

According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Blue Jays have entered the mix for Jason Bay. Of course, the asking price will be high. But Bay is Canadian!
The Jays are 6.5 games out of the wild card, that dangerous area where a team thinks it’s a contender. Bay is under contract for ‘09 too though.
They just don't get it
6.5 back and 4th in a 4 team race is like being 8-10 games back in a 2 team race. Too many of the teams play each other for all of them to fall too hard and fast.

If Bay replaces Manny – that’s good for the Rays, especially if Boston gives up anything else to do it.
If not….Wait until 3:55, and when the Sox don’t really trade Manny, get Bay for Niemmenn, Brignac, and Talbot. Not only do we have Bay this year, but next year as well. Big price to pay, but we don’t lose any really top prospect, and we need to go for it THIS year. Yankees pitching is still weak, and we’re going to be leading the division on Aug 1…no guarantee that will happen anytime in the future.

You have to remember
These national writes are going to run with any story. So if Friedman wants to irk the Pirates he’ll leak that a deal with Dunn is close for two prospects, or something like that. GMs use the press as a trading vehicle more so than not.

The big name clubs are also going to have more rumors floating around because
there are probably a lot more connections there. Ican see it now:

Bahhh ... at this point
Screw the trades go with what you have. Let Pittsburgh eat or waive Bay and let Boston eat or waive Manny.
Manny will not be going to an NL team. It would be interesting to see if he went to the Dodgers Manny being Manny will not go over well because it would force Joe Torre to be Joe Torre.
Manny has been vilified by the Red Sox FO. Now it is biting them in the ass non of this Manny talk would be happening if Ortiz doesn’t come back. The Red Sox have realized that they are over paying for Two DH’s when Ortiz was out and they had 3 decent feilders up in Fenway Boston was a better team. They had to villify Manny in order to get him outta there without an uproar from the fans. This is funny to watch them squirm.
I don’t think Baldelli is the answer. I have watched him play in person and he cant keep up with the Single A players. Either way I vote don’t pull the trigger on anything right now.

if we get someone, it should be a difinitive upgrade over Gomes. Id just assume take my chances with Baldelli/Gomes rather than trading for Hairston, Murton, etc

.024 points higher than Baldelli.

not what were looking for
plus what would we do with Baldelli? Id rather give Baldelli a chance than add the mighty Scott Hairston and leave Baldelli without a job
plus you arent giving me Baldelli's projected offensive abilities
thats based on Baldelli as a very young ML hitter.
How the hell can you project Baldelli?
We have no idea what he looks like, he’s hitting less than 10% line drives in AA. That doesn’t seem to translate too well in my mind.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 31, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
blah blah blah
you can save his LD% in a minor league rehab and do what youd liek with it. I have no use for it. The only thing thats of importance is whether Baldelli’s legs can stay healthy. His production matters very little right now. Baldelli’s bat is not in question, outside of those who hold the 1 month long slump in May last year against him. Other than that he came back in 2006 after 1 and 1/2 years off and led our team in the 2nd half in runs, extra base hits, RBIs and pretty much every major offensive stat
His bat, if healthy (and we are working under the assumotion for the sake of this argument that he will be healthy) will be atleast as good as it was as a 22 year old and only get better
Blah blah blah
This speaks a ton for most of your comments. Thank you for giving me a reason to actually ignore someone’s comments.

Word on Chicago radio is that the Cubs have the Rangers’ Milton Bradley on the radar. However, it does not appear that the Rangers are motivated to trade him.

Why isn't Uncle Milty on the Rays' radar?
He would be such a great addition.

His nickname os Uncle Milty

I wonder if a team couldn't find a way around that. PTBNL, maybe?

Because apparently Salas is better..?

because Ludwick/Salas > Gomes/Wheeler
it appears Percy is our closer and Balfour is more than capable of handling the 8th inning.
I really liked seeing Howell/Balfour/Wheeler/Percy
in the 6/7/8/9 inning yesterday. I don’t think we should break that up.
Because Wheeler is a flyball reliever
and those guys are disastrous in close and tight situations?

The Score 670 Chicago reports that the White Sox are close to acquiring John Lannan from the Nationals.
It’s unknown just who the Chicago would be sending over in the deal, but this is Jim Bowden we’re dealing with, so anything is possible. Lannan is arbitration eligible through 2013, and he can keep the ball on the ground, which would make him a nice fit in Chicago.
9 = 8
maybe bowden wants ANOTHER OF
wtf would the nats give away pitching when they NONE

Are you saying it would be a good deal or a bad deal? Because Lannan is a very promising young rookie.

I posted this above, see my comments (I'm a Nats fan and I'd be pissed unless we got something really special)

I love BP Chats....
Kevin Goldstein (11:02:02 AM PT): Hey everyone, we’re here and we begin with the disappointing news that it seems like the Manny deal has crapped the bed. That takes a little bit of the luster off things, but it gives us hopefully three hours of Jason Bay intrigue!
