Those on-again, off-again Jason Bay-to-Tampa Bay talks are back on, according to a source familiar with the discussions. The two sides have been so far apart that it appeared they’d given up on each other as of early Thursday afternoon. But the source said they’ve closed that gap somewhat and are still talking.

Tampa Bay has hinted its willing to structure a package around pitcher Jeff Niemann and shortstop prospect Reid Brignac, but the Pirates have been seeking one of their elite pitching prospects—Wade Davis, David Price or Jeremy Hellickson.

You’ve got to call their bluff. If they want more pitching then you throw in Hammel (who was a pretty decent starter) or maybe Talbot. But you don’t give them Davis or Hellickson just because they say they want it. If they want Brignac (which they do) then they’ll take the deal.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports that the Jason Bay-to-Tampa Bay talks are back on.
Peter Gammons reports that the Pirates will hold out for Wade Davis over Jeff Niemann. The Rays probably will have to give up Davis, Jeremy Hellickson or Reid Brignac as part of a package for Bay. The Jays and maybe the Cardinals are also still in on Bay.

What good deal has he made? Signing Christian Guzman, Dmitri Young, or Ronnie Belliard?

He’s gone either way. That’s what happens when the feds investigate you for stealing from your own players.

1.) Cordero is a loss, but it’s hard to predict someone is going to tear their labrum. I suppose this one is a demerit for Bowden, but not a thoroughly inexcusable one.

2.) Soriano – this is ALL MYTH. People outside the loop on the Nats always get this wrong. There were NO GOOD DEALS on offer for Soriano at the 2006 deadline. The Mets were offering Phil Humber, and that’s the BEST that was out there. Rather than give Soriano away for bullshit lowballing, Bowden made inestimably smarter move of keeping him and taking the draft picks, which turned into Josh Smoker and Jordan Zimmermann. Zimmermann in particular is kicking major ass in the minors, and is part of the reason why the Nats have so much great pitching potential in the pipeline. This was absolutely the right move on Bowden’s part, and nobody familiar with the reality of the situation thinks otherwise.

3.) Good deals? Well, you have to judge deals by their quality at the time they were made, not based on what developments – unanticipated by both parties – happened later. This is the only fair standard. And on this measure, the following were all incredibly good deals: Kearns/Lopez/Wagner for Gary Majewski/Bill Bray. Snelling/Fruto for Vidro/massive $$$ relief. Milledge for Schneider/Church. Dukes for nothing. Signing Belliard and Young off the scrap heap. Flores – the catcher of the future – AS A FREE RULE V PICK, just an insane steal.

Moreover, the Guzman resigning is impossible to fault. Since Guzman got LASIK surgery and his shoulder repaired, his TTL is much higher than that of the guy who had a legendarily bad 2005 when he was both blind and hurt. His numbers in 2007 and 2008 are much more accurate. Thus getting paid league average for two years (short time frame) is actually quite fair, especially given that the Nats have absolutely NOTHING in the system at SS. Belliard was a great pickup and it would be nuts to fault Bowden for re-signing him at 2 yrs/3.5 million dollars. What, like that’s expensive for a guy who can supersub, start, and give you a decent bat? Young’s re-signing was more money than I would have preferred, and was thus worthy of criticism, but you have to realize it was done as an insurance policy against the likelihood (since borne out) that Nick Johnson would get injured and go on the DL. Still, I think this one is the one you can attack the most, although again deals need to be analyzed in terms of the alternatives on offer.

I have no defense for the Rauch/Bonifacio deal. I think Rizzo drove that one (he was Arizona’s farm director before becoming Washington’s), but still, the return was far too low.

So in summary, you don’t know what you’re talking about w/r/t Bowden’s moves with the Nationals. That’s okay, since you’re not a fan and you’re not expected to. What I’m saying, however, is that dismissing him as a bad GM is ITSELF retarded, and suggests that you really haven’t been paying attention over the past three years. He has, quite the opposite, been solidly above-average as a GM, especially when you consider the obscene budget restraints he’s been forced to work with.

I didn’t expect it to get that long, it’s just that when you defend Bowden you have to correct a lot of the snarky conventional wisdom out there about him.

I won’t defend his work in Cincinnati, or his faults. But he’s NOT a terrible GM, and his track record since 2005 is actually one that any fanbase would be happy with for the most part. Some of his gambles haven’t paid off, but they were all smart gambles that we applauded at the time.

He’s a tools whore who trades for the sexy athlete. He’s had a hard on for Wily Mo Pena that goes back as far as my boner for Alyssa Milano. He gave Guzman 4/16 deal that is only now looking like it was worth it into the 3rd year of the deal. Getting Flores for free was an easy risk for a crap team to make. The Mets couldn’t make room for him – their loss.

I disagree with most everything you've said

I do follow the Nats because I live here. I have two aunts that have seperate season tix packages so I go to the games.

Bowden is awful. He has made NO GOOD DEALS. You can’t say the Kearns/Lopez deals were good. Neither of those players ever were good or will ever be good. Not trading Cordero was a HUGE mistake. What good is a 40 save guy on a 90 loss team? Not trading Soriano was a huge mistake. Considering the complete lack of talent in the system, I don’t trust them to draft the right guy or develop him.

Flores was a good move. I will give them that. Why sign the other two catchers then?

Signing a fat firstbasemen who can’t move and has diabetes to an extension is not a backup plan. That’s an exit strategy.

You also didn’t address the situation with Dominican players.

Who has Bowdin brought in that they could hang their hat on? They lucked out with Zimmerman and that’s it.

I cheer for the Nats and that is why I hate Bowdin!

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Jays’ bid for Jason Bay consisted of one phone call in which the Pirates asked for something so excessive that no further talks were needed.
Shaun Marcum and Travis Snider? The Rays might be the only team with a chance of landing Bay at this late date.

What scares me is that, if I met her randomly, I might hit it too.

Imagine, a not-bad looking woman starts talking baseball with an insane level of knowledge…sure, she’s not superhot or anything, but wow she loves the same sport you do! You never find that in a girl! That’s totally awesome.
