PrintWith the 4 p.m. ET Trade Deadline past, a baseball source in Tampa Bay confirmed that no deal was struck between the Rays and Pirates to send Jason Bay to Tampa Bay in exchange for prospects.
While there remains the possibility that another team could have snuck in an offer before 4 p.m., it appears right now that Bay is staying in Pittsburgh. No other substantial offers were known to be on the table.

Second SIDE or second DISC?
Because side 2 has “The Dirty Jobs” and “Is It In My Head,” which are about as weak as the album gets. Disc 2, however, is pretty freakin’ flawless, what with “5.15,” “Drowned,” “Doctor Jimmy,” “Bell Boy,” “Love Reign O’er Me,” and MOST ESPECIALLY OF ALL “The Rock,” which sums up every beautiful thing ever about Pete Townshend’s melodic genius and the band’s awesomeness as a performing ensemble.

Seriously. I have bought 5000+ CDs at this point, and know pretty much everything about every artistically major musician (whether popular or super-obscure) from 1963-1991…and Quadrophenia remains, for me, the greatest album ever made.

I'm also a musician, but my instruments are (in order of quality) vocal, piano, and then guitar
So I have trouble identifying in that sense with The Who (in the “I want to play what these dudes are playing” way), with the exception of Townshend’s voice, which I adore in all its reedy sincerity. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke is a much closer match for me, since my voice is a dead ringer for his and he’s also a rhythm guitar/piano guy whose parts I can all play easily.

onah Keri: (3:20 PM ET ) Well a lot of people seem to be saying it (tough to surf around and answer questions at once).
Anyway, if it’s true, way to go Rays. Excellent move, didn’t give up any of the truly elite prospects, but still traded from depth and got the big bat they needed, one they can keep next year too.
No shame for the Pirates either. Brignac has come a long way with the glove during his minor league career. I think he needs another year of seasoning on the farm. But he could be a solid contributor from 2010-2015. Niemann projects as a capable #4-5 type for the next six years, the first three coming very cheap, of course.
Win-win. Nice one.
Now....do we go out to try and get Dunn?

Late word was the Pirates were still targeting Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson to be included into the deal

A source in Pittsburgh has corroborated an earlier MLB.com report that Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is going to be traded to the Rays before 4 p.m. ET this afternoon. It has been confirmed that Tampa Bay prospects – Wade Davis, David Price and Jeremy Hellickson were deemed unavailable by the Rays. However, as reported earlier, the Pirates are believed to be satisifed with taking shortstop Reid Brignac and pitcher Jeff Niemann in exchange for Bay.

There are plenty of stalling tactics used to cheat the deadline.
Deals have to be close to final, but if the specifics aren’t worked out (and aren’t really official) faxes can get “lost” and so forth. It’s not at all uncommon.

A short while ago, a source in Pittsburgh corroborated an earlier MLB.com report that Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is going to be traded to the Rays before 4 p.m. ET this afternoon. As reported earlier, the Pirates are believed to be satisifed with taking shortstop Reid Brignac and pitcher Jeff Niemann in exchange for Bay.However, it could be a little more complicated that that. According to another industry source in Pittsburgh, the Rays still are not believed to be offering both Brignac and Niemann. One, it is not known who, is deemed unavailable, along with Wade Davis, David Price and Jeremy Hellickson.

Niemann still throws 92-94 touching 98 with a dirty hammer curve. And Brignac, for all the bad reports about his fielding, is now the best fielding SS in the minors. He’s also got a really big ceiling with the bat. Remember he’s 22 in AAA. He can and will hit. This is the best deal the Pirates are going to get and they will be the Pirates #3/4 prospects behind Alvarez and McCutchen.

I’d like to see Niemann be our new closer though. I like that part. Its Brignac I’m not so sold on.

But your pitching is so bad, you don’t have that luxury. He’s your #3 starter right now. Briganc is at worst a league average SS. When league average is a prospects floor, that’s a good thing. He’ll be fine. He needs some more time in AAA. Probably half a season next year, but he’s going to be very solid.

aren’t what you want to see offensively. Big decline in BB to K, OBP. I still think he’s a fine prospect, but I’m not sure Niemann and he is enough for a very inexpensive Bay for this and next season, coming into this not as a Rays fan.
The D improvement is a good thing, but his offense has been slipping as he’s moved up. Still, an awfully young guy at his level and spot.
I know you want Bay, and you should, but there seems to be an undercurrent that it’s on your terms or forget it. It just isn’t that simple.

Bay is one of the best outfielders in the whole game. Hell, he’s one of the best players, period. We have this fellow named Beckham, we kinda drafted him #1 overall so he could come up in a few years and play SS. Niemann is going to rot in AAA for the rest of his career. He’s got no shot to make the rotation here. EVER. Next year Price is gonna be up, Davis and maybe Talbot will be higher on the contingency plan, and Hellickson will be a better pitcher in a year and a half too. he’s got no place here. Neither does Brignac in a couple years. BAY DOES

If he blocked Bay from coming to the Rays, that is pretty impressive. Just keeping Huntington on the phone for XXX hours during the last 2 days so he couldn’t patch things up with Friedman would be a win. I don’t think Huntington would have caved for just Brignac and Niemann. But I think he would have given in with a few other lower prospects, rather than Hellboy or Davis.

My Pirates finally did something right in not trading for a low value SS prospect and a pitcher who projects for a 4th or 5th prospsect…
Pirates wanted a top line pitcher in return, you have many of them and wouldnt part with any so good job by Huntington for not selling Bay off

To trade Bay, who turns 30 on Sept. 20, the Pirates presumably would need to exceed the offer they received from the Braves last week — Class AAA outfielder Brandon Jones, Class AAA shortstop Brent Lillibridge and two pitchers in the low minors

it’s like we draft Beckham and all the sudden Brignac is chopped fucking liver. this guy was, is, and will be the future SS for the Rays. Beckham is as sure a thing to play SS for us as i am to have sex with angelina jolie. he is the best fielding infielder in the IL, he’s probably the best SS prospect, and he is one of out top 5-7 prospects, meaning he’s top 3 in many other systems.
this man is not some average joe, he’s been projected as an all-star SS, and he STILL projects to that even if some of you deem his expendable b/c we drafted Beckham, or b/c we have Bartlett now, who i will say despite his glove is simply an average SS. better then anything we’ve ever had, but still ML average.

i’ll be really upset if the pirates deal bay to boston and the rays end up not making the playoffs because of stupid bullshit. i hate the red sox and the yanks (as any red-blooded american should) and if i had to pick another team to root for right now besides the buccos it would be the rays.

The Dodgers have acquired Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox, SI.com’s Jon Heyman and NESN reports.
NESN believes the Red Sox are getting Jason Bay in a three-team deal, and SI.com confirms that’s part of it. We imagine the Pirates are getting Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier and more, but that’s just speculation.

FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Pirates will get Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen from the Red Sox for their part in the Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay deal.
We thought LaRoche would be the one top prospect the Pirates wouldn’t focus on, given the presence of Pedro Alvarez and Neil Walker as potential long-term third basemen. Instead, he’s the one top talent they get. The inclusion of Moss and Hansen when they could have been used in other deals makes this an especially unimpressive deal for Boston. One could argue that Bay is as valuable as Ramirez once defense is taken into account, but there are certainly plenty of AL teams glad that the Red Sox made this trade.

That's really not all that important of a consideration.
Like Peter said, Bay and Manny are pretty much equal, except Bay is way cheap and they’ve got LF set for next year. The more I think about it, the more I think this is a good deal for Boston.
