This was recorded on the night of June 30, the first win of a 3-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

They didn't seem to like this video so much. Of course, I don't like them at all so I really could care less.

I Disagree

I was there in ST and watched as Cowbell Kid mercilessly heckled Jesse Litsch (a guy who has never been anything but stand-up, and has long-standing ties to the team/community) in front of his family and friends….IN AN EXHIBITION GAME!!! From what I understand, his shtick became so offensive to Rays and opposing fans alike, that earlier in the year the team was forced to confront him about his antics, with the threat of revocation of his season ticket as a real possibility…Hence the following Youtube video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_TmgxaRX-o&feature=related

All of this leads me to question whether he’s more interested in the Rays, or in getting face time.

But I do admit, the banner, and the idea are creative. But CK is still a jackass in my book.

Maybe I should clarify the Litsch Incident

Good natured heckling is fine, and fun. Mocking a hometown kid, in front of his family/friends, and suggesting he is making a joke of himself and his area, and that he will never succeed in the bigs, in an exhibition game, crosses several lines of good taste and decency.

Trust me

He’s not out to make himself famous. He was getting on Josh Hamilton when the Rangers were in town in May. When he wasn’t heckling Marlon Byrd, he would throw in a few jabs at Hamilton’s problems with addiction and alchohol, but at the same time telling everyone that he was happy for Hamilton and what a great story it was. He doesn’t use profanity and he deals with the REAL douchebag fans very well. The only reason why he’s getting all this attention is because people want to find him out. He doesn’t go out looking for these news appearances and stuff. I know the cowbell is annoying to some Rays fans, but I would like to think it’s even more annoying to visiting fans who will think twice about sitting in that area ever again…

When I was at the first Red Sox game last Monday, I sat in Section 304 for the first 2 innings. I brought my own cowbell and my stadium horn. Even after handing out a few sets of earplugs like I do, I didn’t feel like I was going to get the whole section behind me, so I moved all the way down to Section 144 with the CK and some other people who were there to make noise. I mean, would you rather have all the Sawcks fans going crazy for a lazy fly ball to Center, chanting “Let’s go Red Sawcks” every opportunity they got?

He asked me to record that video and put it up on youtube. I’m the one going around posting it where I can, because less than 24 hours after it being up it was making its rounds through a few Pink Hat Nation blogs, and I hadn’t even attempted to put it out there before that.

If anyone’s out to make himself famous, that would be me despite not appearing in the video. However, I’m not the Cowbell Kid despite my new membership here and first post being this video. What Cowbell has done is what I like to list under “Ideas I wish I came up with, because I would definitely do that.”

Which brings me to my next point:

Don’t do crack!

No, no. GO RAYS! This is a cute video. Makes me proud.

Yeah!

And besides, we could always use a few more Rayniacs. (Who invented that, GomesSweetGomes? Because I’m taking it and running.)

It took two years before he was really noticed outside of Tropicana

From what I understand, he’s a long time Rays fan and season ticket holder. I doubt he started all of this in hope of gaining widespread publicity, but even if he’s doing it now, why should anyone else care as long as he’s not embarrassing the Rays? I don’t know the guy personally, but I love what he does, especially when opposing fans get pissed off.
