7/7: KC (39-50) at RAYS (55-32)
Kansas City Royals at Tampa Bay Rays, Jul 7, 2008 12:40 PM EDT
The widgets aren't working right now, but at least we have Carl Crawford drama. Today he's playing centerfield and doesn't like it too much per the Heater:
"I wish I would have had a little more notice," Crawford said. "But it is what it is. Just gonna run out to centerfield today."
What will be the biggest adjustment?
"You're thinking about (it) - you're taking a conscious effort to think about what you're doing now," Crawford said. "My game is usually based on me not thinking at all, just more knowing this is what I'm going to be doing. So today, I'm gonna be thinking a little bit more than what I normally do. And we'll see how that goes."
Carl Crawford: "My game is usually based on me not thinking at all," the jokes about his plate presence write themselves.

I've always been a big CC fan and he has been one of my favorite players to watch over the last few years, but
come on, man. Get over it! While BJ ticks me off sometimes when he doesn’t seem to be trying in the field, at least he is willing to switch spots in the batting order and do some other things for the team. I wish CC would get over this and truly become more of a team first guy. It especially looks bad with all of the other love getting tossed around for the team. This, in contrast, just comes off as a whiny, and me-first kind of attitude.
Anyways, I hope we see (hear since its not on tv) our boys finish this series out strong and head into the road trip with a ton of momentum!!

"My game is usually based on me not thinking at all"
That explains the throw to first base, among many other things.

you guys are ridiculous,
most athletes tell you they don’t think their game, they feel it. it’s instinctual, a feeling, something natural. they will tell you the more they think, the worse off they are; whether it’s a starting pitcher over-thinking, or a batter getting psyched out, or hell even tiger woods will tell you when he’s on the tee it’s not the thought process, but a clear mind that helps you play well. CC is no different, you over think, you get into trouble.

But all I'm hearing is
Me Me ME
I understand that playing out of your comfort zone is no fun, but if the manager believes it is what is best for the team, then you should just DO IT.
Hopefully he will play solid defense, and go 3-4 and decide that he doesn’t have a problem with it anymore, and that this will be a non-issue henceforth.

I'm with you on this one, davidsmarch...
In the variety of sports I’ve played, I’ve always found that the fans are the only one’s thinking. Athletes practice and practice and practice so that they don’t have to think – their actions are recorded in what we call “muscle memory.”
Beyond that, you can read a lot or a little of emotion and emphasis into what Carl is saying. I obviously read it differently than most of us here; I read it: “Yeah, I’d’ve liked a little more forewarning, but, feh, I’m just going to have to keep in mind that I’m in center, not left.” Rather than: “I hate Joe Maddon! I hate Tampa Bay! None of my teammates will smoke with me anymore! Waah!” as many other seem to have read it. Or perhaps too many of us are just bored at work, looking for things to take our minds off the fact we’re not being paid to play baseball.

Why I interpret it as Carl bitching
His complaints are never after the fact, they’re always pre-emptive. ‘I’m being asked to play center. I don’t like center.’ ‘I’m being asked to bat leadoff, I don’t like leadoff.’ ‘I’m being asked to walk more, I don’t like walks, i like hits.’ ‘I’m being asked to bat 3rd, I don’t like batting third.
I mean, with Delmon at least, his complaints came after the fact, ‘I don’t like playing center, I suck at it, Carl would be better.’ ‘It’s not fair that I’m being punished for not running out a groundout. Other players on this team do it.’ ‘I should be in the majors, I’m better than the guy up there playing my position right now.’
Now we’re not in the clubhouse, the differences between Delmon’s attitude and Crawford’s in my eyes at least, are starting to blur together.
by kericr on Jul 7, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's somewhat valid.
Concerning Delmon. I’m sure he was a brat in the clubhouse and dugout all alike, but he never did complain about playing center while he had to despite it not being the best move for the team.

The not thinking thing
Is just funny because of how critical some of us are of CC and his plate discipline. Other then that, it makes sense. Just the way he described it is funny. I wish I was there for the interview so I could hear how he was talking, but it certainly comes off as somewhat “ME-ish”.
by td32 on Jul 7, 2008 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with on that point.
I wish we could get an audio version of the interview, because if he wasn’t truly offended, then his word choice certainly did not help convey that.

"line drives"
Tony Gwynn didn’t usually swing hard. He was almost aiming for bloops over the infield. Those might technically be line drives, but their more like soft fly balls. If Adam Dunn was swinging, the same trajectory might be seen as a flyball hit off the hands, because if Dunn makes solid contact, he kills it. For Gwynn, solid contact didn’t make the ball go all that far.

10 games? You do realize he was hurt during that time span?
by matthan on Jul 7, 2008 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow domination!!
He is an average first basemen. And title contending teams usually need something better than average. He can put together dominating stretches, and hopefully he does it come playoff time. But he also puts up massive stinkers. Wouldn’t it suck if he put up one of his negative OPS periods in the playoffs?

Did he have it for the first handful of years of his careeer? If so that is pretty Baldelliesque. He has historically been average at absolute best. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he’ll be average from here on out. But is a highly streaky average player acceptable for a contending team?

Bounced around for a while and found a good home with Tampa Bay, where he’s become an above-average 1B
Shut the fuck up, noob.

If he can do that. But will he? I’m looking at his entire career, not just last year. If he can perform at 80% of last year I’ll be happy. I’m not sure he can do that.
by matthan on Jul 7, 2008 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope so. Im certainly not rooting against him.
What I see is the first handful years of his career he was a journeyman. Not even a top 30 first basemen. During the season where he was a minor league roster invite he breaks out and has a great year. The following year he sinks back into the 15th best 1b range.
I’m looking at his whole career, not just last year.

That is RJs argument. I tend to think Pena wasn’t being blackballed. There was a reason nobody wanted him. If he was some great player he would have stuck somewhere. I tend to believe that GMs aren’t that dumb.

Pena, pre-2007
OPS+ in seasons he got significant playing time: 106, 108, 113, 112. That’s top 30, probably top 20, and perhaps league-average (I’m not sure what league-average is for 1Bs).
Teams didn’t like the .240 AVG. Bad move.
by Sky Kalkman on Jul 7, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And there are legit arguments for players like Millar and Overbay. Mainly b/c they walk more and strike out less than Pena.
by matthan on Jul 7, 2008 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
forget the Ks
Millar and Overbay? No. Delgado? No way.
Kotchman’s ahead of Pena (love the D and OBP). Loney I could see, but Jackson’s right at Pena’s level.
Given the list, which 1B would be easy to acquire? None. And how many would be large upgrades? Half.
by Sky Kalkman on Jul 7, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I did say I’d put Pena above Millar and Overbay.

Well
Obviously you are trying to bust my balls, but if you read what I said then it would make more sense. I said there are 10 guys for sure that are better and you can make the case for about 20.
I listed 11 for sure better than Pena
3 more that have a strong case over Pena
3 more about on the same level as Pena
and 3 more that are slightly below Pena, but have an argument.

This is the middle of the season. You do realize that right?
by matthan on Jul 7, 2008 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pena is above average...
Even when struggling he is average at worst.
Championship teams don’t have average first baseman? Here are first baseman that one World Series in the last ten years:
Scott Spezio
Mark Grace
Tino Martinez (x3)
Jeff Conine…
Please, Pena is fine…
by tallyray on Jul 7, 2008 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The point is
You said that we need to get rid of Pena because he’s average. I would agree he’s average, but that doesn’t mean you get rid of him. You can’t properly replace him. There’s nobody worth signing that is significantly better at a reasonable price. Pena also plays excellent defense, amonst the best in the league at 1B, and you don’t even seem to consider that. You may have an argument for your opinion, but the argument you’re using is just flat-out wrong. You blast Howard earlier for having a crappy year than say you’d have him over Pena. Giambi is awful in the field defensively, his numbers are only ‘pretty good’, his best years are well behind him, and he was roiding up, yet you’d rather have him over Pena? Carlos Delgato flat out sucks and you put him on the same level as Pena? The points you’re making are so full of holes that we just can’t point them out quick enough to you.
by kericr on Jul 7, 2008 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kericr
I didn’t say we had to get rid of Pena. I asked how many more years he was here. Big difference. I said he was average. Clearly that means if we can get someone above average then I’d be in favor. But not someone below average. And your bias is what is saying Pena is “clearly” ahead of Delgado. Personally I think he is, but it is not by a huge margin. Delgado has a history of performance. Pena has none. Their numbers this year aren’t that far apart. You are exhibiting homerism at its finest.
by matthan on Jul 7, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Homerism my ass
I just said earlier in this GDT that I wish he’d produce more offense. Patience with a struggling player is not the same as homerism. I’m done talking at you.

You (or others)are asking me who we should replace him with when clearly I stated that he will be here for as long as we are “stuck” with him. If I thought there was a better attainable player out there I certainly wouldn’t have used the word stuck.
Thank you.

So when he finishes in the top 10 you'll change your tune, right?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 7, 2008 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Of course
Im sure it is not much different than if Jackson turned it around and started dominating. I’m suer you’d like him then. I like Pena, but I’m just not confident he can be a top notch first basemen. I’d love it if he dominates. I’m not rooting against him.
by matthan on Jul 7, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Jackson dominated
With a bad process (see: walking guys) then no I wouldn’t “like” him, at least not in the way you’re describing. I “like” players with good processes, if that result doesn’t work out every time I know eventually it will because of the process.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 7, 2008 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m the same way. I see Pena as a hitter with poor fundamentals, poor approach, and a guy that strikes out a lot. If he can turn it around (bunting yesterday was a great start) then I’d love it. There isn’t much difference between that and Jackson pitching intelligently.

But, apparently, it was play where Teahan was running on a 3-2 count. Single to CF. CC gets the throw to the cut-off Gload keeps on going not a very sharp play all around.

How the hell did Teahen get into scoring position? Bunted to get on base – no steals or pass balls that the box score shows, but he scored on a single? Did CC hold onto the ball and take 5 seconds to think about where to throw it too?

Teahen was on first, running with the pitch
Hit to center field, fielded it then a lazy throw to second and he rounded third base and just continued running to home.
