Why we need Gomes

The debate about whether or not to keep Gomes is a great debate. Some are for, while other against, as you can tell from the title i am a supporter of us keeping Gomes. While he is not the greatest hitter, or the greatest fielder, he is a valuable piece in our organization. He is a club house motivator, occasionally he can step up and be clutch ( not Gabe Gross clutch how ever). But most importantly of all, he is the only player on our team who can potentially get hurt (by laying out scrubs such as coco crisp and Shelly Duncan) and his injury not be detrimental to the team. From that last sentence it sounds like i am making fun of Gomes but its true and i think his "other job" is truly valuable for the team, hockey teams all have a giant defense men who lays people put when a message must be sent, so why cant baseball do it. Jonny is a fan favorite (when he takes BP the crowd goes wild when he steps into the cage), he can get the clutch hit occasionally, and he is a good member of the "platoon" when facing lefties.

So i believe that Jonny must be kept here in Tampa, because of his importance to the platoon(because Hinske can hit lefties so we need Jonny in there for the occasional lefties we face) and most importantly his job as Body guard protecting our young players from the evils of the Sux and $kanks.

No chance

This team is too good to waste a roster spot on a bouncer. We need to pull a Dontrelle Willis on him and put his ass in A ball so he can remember how to hit a baseball again because he has obviously forgot. Ruggiano can provide everything Gomes can and probably would have caught Jeter’s liner out to right tonight. I would rather have James Shields up against lefties.

Give me the weak link(s) in the everday Red Sox lineup

Without going down the Red Sox roster, I can’t really think of one aside from maybe Lugo, but offensively, he still seems to make things happen on a regular basis . Now give me the weak link(s) in the Rays lineup. Gomes has to be one of the few that come to mind. Riggans plays less and seems to do better than Jonny does with his opportunities. I would like to see a more consistent lineup with no letdowns or question marks as we go down the order. Right now, out of the platoon at DH/RF, I see Jonny as a major weak link when he’s in the lineup. If he could have improved his hitting against righthanded hitters, maybe he would have been given more playing time ,and his defense would be better as a result of the increased time in the field. The fact is, that didn’t happen. I would really like to see an everyday right fielder that can hit both lefties and righties well so that we aren’t constantly watching a different lineup night in and night out. I like Gomes, but this is a business, and the Rays can’t afford to throw away the opportunity they have this year to get to the “promised land”. The Rays will not beat the Sox down the stretch unless they make some upgrades.

Agreed

If you’re thinking about his combat value, your eyes are off the real prize. IMO, Ruggy brings more to the table at this point and deserves his shot. Or trade for a RH OF. Hitting at the Mendoza line is only barely acceptable when a player catches the ball like, oh, Mendoza. Gomes doesn’t fit that description.

On a personal level I think pretty much everyone likes Gomes. But on a business level he just isn’t producing and something needs to be done. It wasn’t long ago when he was looked at a threat a potential 30 HR/year guy. Yet, now he’s clearly lost at the plate and in the field.

I’d like to see him dealt to one of the teams in California for a low level prospect. He’d be closer to home and he may get a chance to turn things around. The Rays could use his roster spot on someone who has more of a chance to be a contributor now. I think that’d be best for all parties.

im not saying we keep gomes for his great “hitting” abilities. I love Ruggiano and i would love to see him get called back up and become our everyday RF
