Tampa Bays all time best trade deadline move!

Was the trade that sent one of the games most prolific performers out of Boston. I could care less that "Gutless" Andie was fearing what he may have traded away rather than what he would have gained by making a trade. Ramirez leaving Boston is like Jeter being traded from the Yanks or Puhjolz (sp) leaving the Cards.

The best move for the Rays was to have one of the best hitting players ever to suit up and play the game leave the A.L. East for L.A.    IMHO, Theo F'd up! You cannot replace Manny Ramirez, you cannot bring to the table what this cat does offensively. Ortiz will suck the rest of the year as he will not see another hittable pitch. I see the Red Sox not making the playoffs w/o their World Series MVP.

As Steve Phillips stated on ESPN, "this could have been handled in a different way." Manny was the curse buster as he is maybe the most clutch performer in the Major Leagues today. He's the real "Mr October."  Boston fans, management, and that idiot Peter Gammons were relentless in calling for his head rather than reconciliation. What a bunch of blowhards. To boot, Manny said in an interview as he was packing for L.A. "I'll be wearing a Cleveland Indians hat when I'm inducted into the Baseball H.O.F."

WTG Boston!  All I can say is   WOOHOO!

The best move is and always will be

Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato.

This will not change unless a team just gives us a perennial All-Star for nothing. Much like the Mets did.

Well it did take guts

For him to trade Delmon at the deadline, and not announce it till the offseason

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Judging by this board

Very few are. Depending on who was offered (and I guess we will never know) I would agree or disagree with Frieds decision. But I don’t see too many people suggesting he was scared.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Oops I misread

Either way, guts has nothing to do with the decision.

But then why ‘Friedman is stones’?

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

For all we know

He could have changed his position several times, only to have Theo swoop in at the 11th hour behind his back

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

You're looking at the idea that he is stones as a macho thing

I’m saying by not relenting he maintained the plan that was established from the beginning. It would’ve been easy to include Hellickson when Huntington called back, but Friedman stuck to the plan.

That shows a greater understanding of what has been built than simply being gutless or even being ballsy.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 1, 2008 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

On a pure baseball level Friedman made the right move

Although I think they may have undervalued the impact of a serious playoff run would have for major league baseball in this area.

So phillips is smarter than Gammons?

Gammons is not a moron.

He’s one of the best sport writers of this generation.

He's not a moron

So much as he is a mouthpiece for Theo Epstein. Much like a government inspector in some industries, he’s gotten a little too buddy-buddy to do his job effectively (at least when it involves the Sox)

I believe it was people on this site

calling him an idiot and a pawn for saying that the Manny deal was not in fact dead and the Bay was in fact going to be a Red Soxs? Even after the Rays had supposedly traded for him. Turns out he wasn’t a pawn and he knew exactly what he was talking about. All of those guys get fed misinformation and information that changes very quickly making rumors look wrong, but at the time he was the only saying the deal was going to happen and he was right.

Yes the Red Sox got worse(slightly) and gave up prospects to do so

But it was a move that had to be made by Boston. They also have Bay locked up for next year at relatively cheap and probably will be more aggressive in Free Agency without Mannys salary on the books. I think it was a good move for the Sox overall.

I am not high on Hansen and Moss at all. I think Hansen is nothing more than a mediocre at best reliever and Moss is a 4th outfielder. Both guys are easily replaceable. Especially if you have money like the Sox.

by Sveet on Aug 1, 2008 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

I think people are overvalueing the money aspect of the deal

The Sox will spend money if they think it is smart. Look at the Daisuke deal. They dropped 50 mil just to negotiate with him.

Who could they go after though?

Unless they move Youks, they won’t go after Tex. I guess they could go after Sabathia. There pretty much good everywhere but shortstop. Lowrie is pretty good at the plate, but I guess they don’t trust his range.

Anybody have a source

for the International Players that are candidates to come over. We haven’t really seen anybody that you could build a team around, but Daisuke, Ichiro, Aki all are great role players. For a team that is only a piece or two away I think the International market is a great place to look.

Unless Yu Darvish gets posted

which is unlikely, there shouldn’t be any bank-breaking Japanese free agents or posted players this year. Koji Uehara is probably the best of the bunch, but he’ll be a 34 year old pitcher next year who’s aleady started having arm troubles, and his Japanese team converted him from starter to closer this year.

That said

if Darvish does get posted, his posting fee will probably break Matsuzaka’s record.

Catcher.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see them go after Furcal.

God I hate them so much.

I hate baseball.

I have to say

This morning, Theo Epstein probably feels like this:

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

Nobody should deny that Theo is a very good GM

That Boston team is extremely well ran from top to bottom, which makes the possibility of beating them for the division crown so much more rewarding.

The question is WWCLD?

What would Chuck Lamar do (or have done)?

by matthan on Aug 1, 2008 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

Manny is on the decline

He is still a very good hitter but he is the Manny we all have seen the past few years. His bat is a bit slower and his numbers are down. Jason Bay’s numbers are pretty close actually and Bay is a much better fielder (has to get used to the Monster though). So many people are saying “You can’t just trade a hall of famer!” Sure you can. The guy’s 36 and he was half-assing it on a team in contention. This trade is a no-brainer. Think about the player that Manny “is” not who he “has been.”

Evan the Red Sox players were all pretty much in agreement that Manny had to go.

by stpetelawyer on Aug 2, 2008 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

Might not be Manny

But Bay already won the Red Sox a game!
