You may call me a dreamer...
One thing that has not been stressed enough about the deadline is what the positive possibilities for the Rays are. The most obvious positives involve what can happen with our own players that we kept and can call up.
Niemann could be called up to be another arm out of the BP, and I think he'd be very effective in that role. He induces a fair amount of groundballs (over 40% of balls in play which is around Kaz's career high, but lower than the 50%+ that Halladay has year in and year out) and only walks batters about once every three innings. I think he could be a very effective swing-type reliever opposite JP Howell.
Brignac won't help the big club until at least next year, but some of the other young pitchers (Davis, Price, or Talbot) or Salas could be a nice shot to the arm in the BP, as well.
Where will we find a bat? There isn't a big impact bat in the minors that could come up and transform the offense like Dunn or Bay could have. However, there are a number of solid bats that could help to spark a stagnant offense. Ruggiano could be a serviceable RH bat to play RF against LHPs. Rocco may come up and hit like he before he became the bubble boy. CC, BJ, and Pena could turn around there seeming down years.
The idea that the players might feel "let down" by management is a bit of an overstatement, and any effect that might exist should be mitigated by the triumphant return of Rocco Baldelli. Imagine the fanfare and excitement around him starting Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd to face (Bay area moy himself) LHP Kenny Rogers. That could be a huge boost in morale.
While the team did not get the big bat that some of us were salivating about, help could come from within. The other thing that few are mentioning is the change in dynamic in BOS.
Jason Bay has only been involved in about 10 meaningful trips to the batters box. They all came in his All-Star game HR Derby appearance in which he hit as many homers as I would have, 0. Who knows how he will react down the stretch as the bright lights in BOS burn down on him. We do know one thing, though, there is no way he can match the results that Manny has provided to the Sawx down the stretch in years past. So at best, Jason Bay is a wash with Manny.
The two throw-ins in the deal could have HUGELY negative repercussions for the MassHoles. Brandon Moss, while not much more than a fourth OF, is just that. If the oft-injured JD Drew goes down, the Sawx will be throwing out the offensive juggernaut in the OF that is Crisp, Dellsburry, and Bay. Talk about a punchless lineup. They would have 2 legit 30 homer threats. That lineup looks about as threatening as ours (maybe less). Throw in the fact that an already taxed BP lossed another arm, and Daisuke's inability to pitch 7 strong innings, and we may have a recipe for a late season slide.
I guess the point of this post is to bring up the positive possibilities of what could happen from here on out. I mean the bats can't get any worse than they have been, can they? Cheers to finishing strong and hoping to be in St. Pete for the first ever game in October!

Except that one
Niemann’s that popped out Puerto Rican and left handed. Blows the whole idea of genetics away.

Patience?
Rays management has almost too much patience with some of the players. Navarro last season looked horrible as did Jackson. My question is why was Neimann the man to be traded when he has twice the arm Sonnanstine has? I would much rather see Neimann on the BIG League squad than Sonny. Andy’s a good guy and gets all he can from his talent, however, if we show Neimann the patience we did Jackson & Sonnanstine he could be a dominating pitcher with the arm he has.
Brignac? I’m not looking forward to seeing him at SS. Bartlett is twice the defensive SS that either Brignac or Zobrist. I would take the defense of Bartlett playing SS any day of the week over Zobrist or Brignac. The difference is HUGE!
No trades and I now can’t wait to see Rocco and Price in the Bigs and Miller and Reyes on the waiver wire.

how can you say that almost have too much patience,
but point to two examples of where their patience has worked out wonderfully? Navarro is an all-star, and Jackson is a very above average 4/5 starter. I agree that Niemann could be better then Sonny, but will he? is he ready for the bigs? apparently they don’t think so.
i also don’t agree with you about Brignac. from all indications, his glove work is excellent. i saw one “expert” even say he has the best infield glove in the IL yesterday during all the trade talk. his bat is probably on par with Bartlett at this point, but obviously no need to rush him if the trade-out is a wash. let him develop his bat some more, and there’s a good possibility he will be starting for us in 09.

Bartlett is the glue to that defense
For whatever reason, the defense seems to feed off him and his play. They didn’t seem to have the same chemistry when he was on the DL. I don’t know much about Brignac, but he will need to be much better than Bartlett to take over SS next year. Does he have Bartlett’s speed and basestealing ability? That part of Barlett’s game has definitely been a big part of the team’s success this year (ref Boston games:4/27…scored from first on Beckett’s P/O attempt & 7/2…2B, stole third, and scored first run of 6-run 7th inn). Bartlett’s hitting was improving slightly before he got hurt. Hopefully, he will continue to improve during the remainder of the season.

i think the fact that we have NEVER had a decent SS leads us to egrandize Bartlett's play
he’s been good no doubt, and it was obvious we missed him when he was gone. but that wasn’t b/c he is a God at SS, it’s b/c Zobrist is a piece of shit, and couldn’t make the plays that Bartlett, and most good ML SS’s should be able to make.

I assume you mean defensively
Otherwise Lugo was better with the bat.

Who said he was/is a god?
I said he was the glue to the defense, and that he seems to improve the defensive chemistry greatly when he’s in the game. Aside from an early stretch where he racked up a handful of errors over a week or two, he’s been solid on defense. Brignac will have to be better than Bartlett, not the same as Bartlett, if he wants to start next year.

+1
Baseball America rated Brignac as the Rays top defensive infielder, so clearly he can use the glove.
I feel as though Sonny is kinda saved by the fact that he leads the team in wins. I think there might be more outcry for Niemann to take his spot if he were 5-11 rather than 10-6. Plus the further along we get in the season, the less likely it is any change will be made (unless Sonny completely loses it and starts giving up 5 runs every start).

who know's man,
if the org sees a better option, i don’t think they will hesitate to go for it. if niemann is just lights fucking out for his next 4-5 starts, or price just plain silly dominates, i would very well see them moving sonny to the pen for a real stretch run.

Monroe
I know it’s not a thrilling prospect, but we can probably still get Craig Monroe if Rocco doesn’t work out. We’re first on the AL waiver list, and I’m sure we wouldn’t need to give up anyone on our 40-man roster to get him.

You're not first on the waiver list.
It goes by current standings. Only goes by prior year early the following season.
And Craig Monroe is just another Gomes, maybe better on D, but he hasn’t hit lefties.
