Great news from the Rocco rehab check: his line drive percentage is apparently up to 11%! The sample size is still extremely small, but it seems like these past few days have featured a few more Rocco liners which is extremely encouraging. Using the MLE caclulator at minorleaguesplits.com Rocco's numbers at Montgomery translate to a .813 OPS at the major league level. Tonight is Rocco's last rehab game in Montgomery and the Rays take on lefty Kenny Rogers tomorrow night, could that be Baldelli's return to the Trop?

it'd be nice, but it's doubtful
after going 7 in the field tonight, i highly doubt the let him play at all tomorrow.
Dear god lets hope so
I’m actually taking the excruciating drive down to St. Pete tomorrow and Baldelli makes it all worth it. Plus the Lord and Savior Beej figurines should be good.

Of course
but James is a sideshow compared to the main attraction. I would still be going if he wasn’t there.

Just so I have everything understood properly
Unless the Rays come up with another “injury” to start another rehab assignment, the only real option is for him to return to the major league club, correct? I mean I guess they could have him workout on his own, but he doesn’t have the option to play anymore in the minors, right?

He's never been optioned to the minors while on the 40 man
So I believe he’s got three options remaining.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 1, 2008 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions
apparently i don't understand how options work,
many players have never been optioned to the minors while on the 40 man, but isn’t there some provision about active ML time, or games played, that negate that stipulation?
I think you're incorrect
Options explained via wikipedia:
If a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the active major league roster, he is said to be on optional assignment—his organization may freely move him between the major league club and the minor league club. If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons, he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers. However, if a player has less than 5 years of professional experience, he may be optioned to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers. If a major league player is ineligible for free agency and “has options” remaining, his team may option him to a minor league team without consequence. This is usually what is meant when players are “sent down” to the minors. Likewise, when a player on the 40-man roster is added to the active major league roster, he is “called up” to the majors.
According to Rays Index
Baldelli has one option year left.

but Rocco has both 5+ years of professional experience,
and 3+ years on the 40 man. i don’t see how he has any options remaining.
According to neyer
After three years as a pro, a player must be protected on a team’s 40-man roster, or he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft (more on that later). Once he’s served those three years, and assuming he is added to the 40-man roster, his club then has what are called “options” on him. When a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man Major League roster, he is on “optional assignment.” One common misconception about the rules is that a player may only be “optioned out” three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those three seasons.
If I am reding this correctly: Baldelli is in his 6th year as a pro. After the first 3, years, team has 3 option years, this being his last.
by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions
From SOS Wiki
Whether minor-league players are added to the 40-man roster to be protected during the Rule 5 draft or as an injury replacement or callup during the season, they often need to be sent back to the minor leagues. In order send a player back to the minors while retaining him on the 40-man roster, a team can send him down on an optional assignment (option for short). In general, a player has three options – this means he can be optioned down in three different years. If a player is optioned down twice in one year, it only counts for one option. After a player has used up all his options, he must be kept on the 25-man roster or passed through waivers.
My understanding of that is the options are maintained IF they aren’t used. So it’s not a first three season thing, BUT I believe players with so many years of experience can refuse the assignment and become free agents.

* If a player has accrued five years of Major League service time, he has the right to refuse an optional assignment and elect free agency.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Entering this year he had 5 exact.
MLB DL time counts as service time.

Also, with the possible exception you cite
Options are based on years, not number of times optioned
by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, as in three option years.
So a player can be optioned down as many times as need be in that given season. Say we were to call up Price, that would be one option used (assuming it’s not September), we could demote him and then bring him back up after 10 days and that’s still only one option used.
Options aren’t based on number of OVERALL times optioned, but rather on number of YEARS where an optional assignment was given.

On the 40 man BUT NOT ON THE 25 MAN
Rocco’s never been on the 40-man but not on the 25 man, except due to injuries.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
does this not apply to Rocco?
“When you hear that a player is “out of options,” that means he’s been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he’ll have to clear waivers”
No no no no no
In order for someone to have an option year taken, there are two requirements:
1) The person is on the 40-man roster
2) The person is not on the 25-man roster (other than by reason of injury, suspension, etc.)
Ever since Rocco came up, he has never been off the 25-man roster, except due to injury. Thus, he has all his option years remaining.
There is also a rule similar to the 10/5 rule that allows a player to refuse an option and become a free agent if they’re optioned, but I’m pretty sure Rocco hasn’t gotten there yet.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
And of course
if I had read further down, I would see that all of this was already explained, and that he indeed has hit the veteran rule period.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
good bye reyes, hello Salas
good bye Gross, hello Ruggiano
after those simple 4 moves, our team will be much improved, and pretty complete if you ask me.
I'll still be a little surprised to see Gross go
I think they may wait and see and then just bring up Ruggs in September
Blake
USF--Class of '09
i wouldn't
Gross has been worthless at the plate the past 2 months. Ruggs has the same defense, and more offensive upside. i wouldn’t be surprised to see a move soon.
Wrong.
Gross had an awful July, but a great June. He also saw his ABs plummet in July.

2 months, 1 month, just semantics
point is we can upgrade internally and shoudln’t hesitate to do so.
Agreed.
If the offensive productions are similar and you must choose one, go with the guy who actually plays defense.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 1, 2008 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions
i don't think i said anything about Floyd,
though if Baldelli and Ruggiano are brought up, Gross has no place on this team. he will not DH, and that already gives us 4OF’s. unless Roccis is strictly DH, which i don’t forsee, Gross is gone in that scenario.
I don't think they'll bring up Ruggs until September callups
Or unless the team decides to fold tent on Gomes, and as bad as he’s been, he’d actually have to be worse for that to happen.
dude is still hitting above .300, has been all year,
with Gomes still below .200, i really don’t think they will need much more reason to give Ruggs a shot.
Gomes could hit .300 at Durham
Has before.
by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 1, 2008 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Saying that Gross has no place on this team
is saying that Floyd does. Which is simply wrong.
If the offensive productions are similar and you must choose one, go with the guy who actually plays defense
I don’t see how this is hard to figure out.
regardless of production, IN THAT MOTHER FUCKING SCENARIO,
Gross will have no place on this team. i don’t see why that is so hard to figure out?? i’m not advocating for Floyd over Gross, but if Ruggiano and Baldelli get called up, Gross and most likely Gomes are both gone. Floyd will still get the call at DH against righties.
YOU DONT CUT A MOTHER FUCKER JUST BECAUSE HE CAN PLAY THE FIELD
which is exactly what you’re saying we should do. Cutting Gross just because Ruggiano and Baldelli can play the field is FUCKING IGNORANT.
ANY way you slice it, IN ANY SCENERIO, Gross has more value to the team than Floyd.
And you get a -1 for forgetting that Hinske is complete shit in the field.
by Vin on Aug 1, 2008 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions
you can't carry 5 of's unless they will DH aswell,
and with Hinske BEING SHIT IN THE FIELD, he will DH, as will Floyd and probably Baldelli as well. i’m not advocating cutting a mother fucker just b/c he can play the field, i’m saying there will be no place for him on this team. that’s not a slap at him, or any indication of how he’s performed, it’s just something that happens to teams ALL THE MOTHER FUCKING TIME, you make trades, or promotions, and guys become redundant, expendable, or just not playable.
SMFH
Explain to me how having an extra outfielder is more redundant than having two lefthanded DH’s…

and with Hinske BEING SHIT IN THE FIELD, he will DH, as will Floyd

in that scenario,
they will keep Hinske and play him in the field if necessary. i don’t want it, but they’re not going to cut Floyd and keep Gross IN THAT SCENARIO.
There is simply no scenerio
you can present that could justify keeping Floyd over Gross. So stop trying.
You want a reason to keep Gross over Floyd as the DH too? How about he’s 7 years younger, is under team control until 2011, and can run the bases infinitely better.
Really, just quit.
by Vin on Aug 1, 2008 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions
i'll put 5$ on it right now,
that if both Baldelli and Ruggs are called up, Gross goes before Floyd.
and I accepted, dick
If you’re going to throw your crazy ass ideas out there don’t be so defensive when they’re shot down.

crazy ass ideas?
i think i rationally supported every one of my ideas, in the scenarios i purported. nothing i said was in any way crazy. i’m not being defensive b/c you disagree, it’s the way you went about disagreeing.
regardless of production, IN THAT MOTHER FUCKING SCENARIO,
Apparently.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 1, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
it gets aggravating saying "in that/this scenario"
a million mother fucking times, and people seem to just ignore that whole phrase and extrapolate everything you’re saying to whatever parameters they see fit.
i don't want Floyd anymore either,
i’d rather see a Hinske/Baldelli DH when he’s not in the field, and a Hinske/Ruggs DH when baldelli is in the field.
if you are keeping a player who will NEVER see the OF, you are keeping him as a DH
and in that case, if they call up both Ruggs and Baldelli, gross will NEVER see the field, his fielding prowess means nothing, and Floyds superior batting numbers are the only thing that matters. they may not be far superior, but they are better.
Am I the only one who thinks that a combo of Ruggs/Baldelli/Gross would be outstanding purely for the fact that 3 out of 3 can play anywhere in the OF?
In Gross/Gomes/Floyd only 2 out of 3 can play the OF.
by EminenceFront on Aug 1, 2008 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
ok, so we'll have 3 RF's? and a bunch of guys sitting on the bench.
you can’t have all 3 of htem, b/c one of them will NEVER see the batters box. either Rocco will play RH, and then our DH’s will DH. or Gross will play, leaving Rocco to DH against lefties. or Ruggs will play, still leaving Rocco to Dh against lefties. meaning no matter what scenario you throw out, one of them will never bat. you just can’t carry 5 OF’s, unless you plan to DH all of them aswell.
But what about
Rocco getting some PT at 1B. Aybar/Hinske isn’t all that great over there as backups and it would be another way to get Rocco AB’s without having him strain himself in RF.
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
i honestly have never seen Baldelli play 1b. and i don’t think that it’s all that easy to just pick it up now, i don’t really think that’s a good option, at least not now.

but I don’t think you can count one bad month against him, especially since he was given little to know chance during July. He has the best defense out their in right field and has proven to be a pretty good clutch hitter.

So I’m not.
Floyd is completely redundant. He has been for a while. The ONLY reason to maybe keep him around is because he has veteran experience, and guys in the bullpen usually don’t get to see position players much (and thus Percival couldn’t have much of an effect on those guys).

regardless of all this nonsense, any guesses on what happens in the off season?
we’re going to have to add Davis, Morlan, Mcgee, Thayer, Mason & Royster all to the 40 man of risk losing them in the rule 5 next year. that’s 6 guys, that’s a lot of moves to be made. obv next year we probably won’t see Reyes, Miller, possibly Percival, so that covers Thayer, probalby Mason, and maybe Davis to start out? who knows…
you really think so?
think they’ll just let him walk? it’d be a shame, i know he’s old for the minors, but the guy has never been anything but stellar throughout his career, and is having maybe the best year of his career presently. i at least see him getting a shot next spring to compete for a spot, seems to be decent against righties…
