8/1: DET (55-53) @ RAYS (63-44)
Detroit Tigers at Tampa Bay Rays, Aug 1, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Miner's K:BB ratio gives me warm feelings about this game, which means we'll end up walking all of twice tonight while striking out six times.

Yankees Sign Victor Zambrano
According to Peter Abraham, the Yankees have signed 33 year-old righty Victor Zambrano to a minor league deal. Zambrano posted a 9.45 ERA in 40 Triple A innings this year.
Abraham indicates he will stay in Tampa and work out and is coming off surgery. Not sure what surgery that refers to, but Zambrano did spent time on the DL with an elbow strain last year. He also had Tommy John surgery in May of ‘06 as well as a procedure to repair a flexor muscle tear. At the time, it was thought to be possibly career-ending.
How do you have a sub-4 ERA with a 1.0 K/BB ratio?
And are the Yankees so desparate that they are signing a never-was that is coming off surgery?
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.
Umm...
I think they like to acquire people who have some level of talent. Zambrano had great stuff. They signed him to a minor league deal. These things happen all the time. Mocking them for this is as stupid as it would be for Yankees fans to mock us for signing Ben Hendrickson or Heath Phillips. Are we so desperate that we’re signing Heath Phillips? A Yankee castoff with a 5.50 ERA in AAA.
Tools Whore
Sign Bonds!
and he was d-e-s-t-r-y-e-d his first time out,
move price to AAA for fucks sake, it can’t hurt him, can it?
That's pretty impressive...
And his H/9 isn’t really that out of hand. He must be shutting teams down with RISP. Sounds like he matches up perfectly against the Rays.
Just for fun, there have been 16 players since 2000 to have pitched that many innings with a K/BB like Minor’s and an ERA under 4. Quite the rarity.
Ok you guys...
I’ve spent some time over at my regular haunt at BTF defending the Rays.
What are you guys doing to me?
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.
Who are you at BTF? Mr2Bits?
I am, predictably, Esoteric. (Or, as of right now, “Esoteric roots for the two worst teams in baseball.”)

*OF Rocco Baldelli will finish up a rehab assignment with Montgomery tonight, with the plan to play seven innings. It appears he’s getting closer and closer to a return, but Maddon said Baldelli will be re evaluated Saturday to see how his body responds.
Well… I suppose its time we start taking bets on whats going to happen tomorrow. I’m sure it’ll either be:
A) Rocco comes down with another “injury” and is assigned to another rehab assignment
B) Rocco is activated and optioned
C) Rocco is just plain activated and someone gets DFA’d
Personally, I’m taking B.
I don't see him as any worse than the options we have right now.
I say give him a shot. Worse case he sucks or gets injured and we option him.
We wont catch sucktitus
that’s for guys like Glover and Reyes

Easier said than done.
In-game adjustments are some of the hardest things to do. Especially when you’re gripping the ball harder and trying so hard to fix them.
Kaz needs to get in a good frame of mind very quickly by relaxing and setting a rythm.
by EminenceFront on Aug 1, 2008 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Let me re-phrase...
MLB pitchers should be able to make those adjustments. Guys that are supposed to be #1’s HAVE to be able to make adjustments. If you are talking college or high school, or even minor league ball, I agree.
That's what they get paid for yes.
But that may be the hardest thing in pitching: consistency. Let’s see what adjustments he makes in the next couple innings.
by EminenceFront on Aug 1, 2008 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions
so if we get shutout, and kazmir doesn't give up another hit, we'd throw a no-hitter and lose.
9 = 8
Yeah this game is bullshit already
This umpire couldnt call a fuckin strike if they were bowling. Mechanics are ugly yes but he is getting pinched too.
Look at the pitches from the first batter.
After that his pitching went to shit…. But the first batter should have been a K

Kaz starts off with a strike ... wow
Somebody pass him a joint please he isnt blazed enough to pitch tonight.
question
do you think Rays would trade Price for Pujols and some cash?
I remember that retarded rumor.
His pitches were down.
Which is very very encouraging.

Well damn
Rocco is flying back to St. Pete tomorrow. So if all goes well tonight, and he has an ok workout Saturday, it sounds like he’ll be activated.
I sincerely hope nobody pulls a muscle tonight and has to go on the DL for two weeks.
That would be awful!

if he did all that
he can replace Gross with Dan Johnson also, but that wouldn’t excite me that much.
random thought
Maybe we should trade for Homer Bailey in the offseason and try to save his career like we did with Jackson.
ok, I don’t know why I am still posting this, he wouldn’t have a spot.
Because we need more pitching prospects

Why is he arguing?
If he wins, isn’t it a ground rule double?
i wonder if Baldelli will ever be a regular CF again
and if that incredible speed he once had will fully come back
Upton will end up getting booed this year in the Trop
People are getting tired of him, I would venture to say the Gomes is liked by more fans than Upton. With Gomes they realize it is ability that keeps him from being an everyday player. With Upton they see the laziness and attitude.
We are so due to break this slump
Too many guys hitting below their career lines, RISP hitting ridiculously low. We are bound to break out. I was thinking tonight, since Miner is nothing special
He usually sees 17 P/G
I don’t know what’s up with him tonight.

There's also a huge difference between 2nd w/1 out and nobody with w/2 outs
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 1, 2008 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Well....
That is something completely different. He stole 2nd. So you should say a guy on 1st and one out if you want to bring up stealing and how overrated it is.
Stealing second and third are different though
B.J. is fast enough that anything in play and outside of the infield should score him from second. The only difference is a wild pitch.
I think the steal idea there is pretty debatable with your best hitter up.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 1, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Brilliant Observation
Any other pearls of wisdom to share? Like hit a HR if you can?
does that mean you have a better chance of scoring when you have a runner on 2nd with no outs than a runner one 3rd with one out?
9 = 8
It's not a % of scoring
It’s an expectancy chart. The less outs and more runners the better.

Offense starting to click?
Not sure but they did get timelier hitting tonight… and a few passed balls helped too. I would love to see Pena and Longo get in a Home Run race that would help the team rather nicely.
Pena has been crushing it lately and has be due to break out...
Longo has also been good and I think we’re starting to see Carl really turn the clock back to last year.
