Recap

You know, I would go on a rant on how 9 walks is unacceptable, but really that strikezone seemed all over the place tonight. Yes, you can say that about most nights when calls don't go your way and it's a cop out, yadda yadda ect.

Three points I want to make

- Carlos Pena may or may not have a man crush on Evan Longoria.

- I may or may not have a man crush on Evan Longoria.

- Evan Longoria had a crush on Joel Zumaya's fastball.

Also Gary Glover has elected for free agency rather than accepting an option to Durham. Oh well.

Sox win

why would they not walk Lowrie to get to Varitek?

Plus it puts a force on every base

by Sveet on Aug 1, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

true but

I think the pros outweigh the cons

by Sveet on Aug 1, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true again

but lowrie is a better hitter than Varitek.

Plus Embree throws hard and Varitek’s bat is slow

It’s just a personal preference. I would have walked him. Neither is wrong or right I guess

Like Carlos Pena?

It’d be like the Spanish Inquisition…nobody would expect it.

I find it funny that I was the first to mention Kaz was getting pinched in the 1st

Everyone said I was smoking crack. Now everyone admits the strike zone was all over the place. Its not hard to see immediately when a pitcher is getting pinched. Kaz did the best with what he had. They won and I do think you are seeing a Home Run chase beginning for Longo and Pena down the stretch. This one tonight was a positive win because two weeks ago this kind of game would have been a loss.

Way to pat yourself on the back...

But you are weong. Sure, the ump was all over the place….just like Kazmir. He threw so many pitches tonight that werent even close. He looked awful. The ump sucked, but so did Kaz.

by td32 on Aug 2, 2008 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kaz was a mess but..

What the hell was the ump smoking before the game? Has anyone ever heard of this joker? Worst strike zone i can remember for a long, long time. At first I thought it was just one of those deals that Kaz wasn’t getting the benefit of the doubt due to him missing the glove so much so often but the ump was all over the place for both teams.

What a joke…..Hopefully they review the pitch FX as i can deal with guys with the own strike zone but at least be consistent.

And and one other small nugget that i picked up from the game…....in the 9th with 1 out and a runner on 1st I saw Iwamura turn back and wave to BJ to move back to protect against anything over his head. BJ took a few steps back and as soon as Iwamura turned back to face the batter BJ moved back forward. Not sure why but i thought that was funny.

Great win tonight.

From my vantage point,

admittedly not particularly good, I thought there was a movable strike zone. In the first inning, I was sure Kazmir threw some strikes that were called balls. But I realize that is probably the fan speaking, not an impartial observer, and I do think that later in the game the Tiger pitcher got squeezed a bit too. I was also surprised at the called third strike on Longoria in his first at bat.

But that home run was majestic.

And how about that Gross catch in the 9th! Without it, Cabrera is up as the tying run.

Question. Was Leyland arguing that Cabrera’s ball hit the catwalk and should have been a home run? They did not announce that the game was being played under protest, but I don’t know what else he could have been discussing. In any case, did it hit the catwalk or was it simply off the wall?

Also, I was commenting to my son after the game that I saw 2 plays in which it seemed Upton was loping, not running full tilt after fly balls. One was the Cabrera hit. I think he either lost it in the roof or was sure it was out. Crawford also seemed befuddled on that play. In any case, he played it well off the wall, and there was no way he could have gotten to it.

The other was on a long line drive into the gap. I think Granderson hit it. In my view, there was no way he could get to it and rather than run full tilt at the wall he decided to play the carom. Had he rushed at it and extended himself to try the catch it might well have bounded back as an inside the park home run. I think it very possible that some apparent loping in the outfield is simply judgment as to how best to play the ball, not dogging it.

Later in the game, Upton made a very nice running catch in deep center field. On that ball, he sprinted back and hauled it in. Again, I credit him with solid decision making, not taking some plays off.

I also think it very unlikely that Maddon would tolerate anything less than total effort. It has been the mantra here for almost 3 years now, to play the game right regardless of the score or situation. Maddon’s response to Young in last year’s penultimate game indicates he will not brook partial efforts, and if Upton were loafing, I am confident Maddon would address it immediately and effectively.

I talked to some fellow fans after the game

They said that the Cabrera ball went over the C ring, and hit a wire on its way down (which would explain why Upton looked so lost on the play as well as why Leyland was arguing). In any event, under current MLB rules I don’t think its a call that can be protested.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 2, 2008 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the 2 instances you are referrng to...

The ball Cabrera hit was clearly not loping on Upton’s fault. I’m not saying you are doing it, but people are clearly looking for every chance to call Upton lazy. It was obvious on tv that he was confused and didnt know where the ball was.

On the 2nd instance you mentioned, if Upton dove and missed it, he would have been castigated for being an awful defensive player and an idiot, much the way people ripped him when he dove for a catchable ball in Toronto, yet missed.

WHy is everyone so quick kto jump on this kid? Not saying you Bob, but clearly people are looking to criticize him.

by td32 on Aug 2, 2008 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not gonna play that card...

...but you’re right – the radio talk show crowd (besides Bobby Fenton) have been inexplicably all over BJ for his supposed “laziness” while I watch practically every game and just don’t see it. They might as well throw a “shiftless” in there, too, imo.

by zeng8r on Aug 2, 2008 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But

That is exactly my point. He was NOT loafing but people are looking for it, or as zeng8r suggests there might be other reasons they might claim he was. I do think that sometimes he does not run full out because to do so would be stupid as it would put him out of position to play it properly.

Incidentally, early in his career, the knock on Henry Aaron was that he was a lazy player.

Incidentally, this is from the comments at BTF on the attacks on Manny’s character. (Talk about more media generated nonsense!!!)
___________
“Top of the 2nd at Yankee Stadium. Vlad Guerrero just hit a routine grounder to second and jogged to first.

He jogged to first.

I repeat: he jogged to first.

I await the next Peter Gammons hit piece attacking Guerrero for quitting on his teammates and being a disgrace to the game.

If you pay attention to how many players jog to first – they do it all the time.

Selective memory and bias, folks.”
__________
I think there is something to this, although I also dislike seeing players not run out balls.

by bobr on Aug 2, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It definitely happens all the time

And people hate it because it goes against everything that is taught in little league. Remember how much people used to hate players that caught flies with one hand? Now it’s common place but it used to be flashy and looked down upon.

It’s a total bias and really obstructs how people watch and perceive games. Players who are perceived to have immense levels of talent are the ones accused most of using it inadequately. I took a grad level Sport Media course and it really changed the way I view the media. I’ve used the Hinske example before, but when he runs hard and doesn’t make a play it is because he tried his best but wasn’t physically gifted enough to make the play. Upton does the same thing and he comes up short because he’s lazy or took a bad route. He has more control over his range of abilities and effort than any others. It’s a joke.

by tallyray on Aug 2, 2008 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I completely agree..

Although Manny was jogging on balls he should have been hustling on. He clearly would have had a hit if he ran hard on the groundball the Figgins.

The call

Detroit News Quotes”It was a home run,” Leyland said, firmly. “The ball hit the catwalk and dropped down. No doubt in my mind. You could tell the way the ball reacted, and the way they (outfielders) reacted.”
