Wow no unearned runs

for Dickey, don’t catchers sometimes missed the knuckleball??

by sofladude77 on Aug 10, 2008 12:06 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'm pretty sure that passed balls and wild pitches don't make a run unearned

they definitely aren’t errors.

reason #74 that errors and the differentiation between earned and unearned runs are dumb

thanks

i’m sure knucklers induce more passed balls, though, which is really as much their fault as the catcher’s.

i haven't seen a whole different one for knuckleballers

can you point me there?

i know the whole BABIP thing doesn’t really hold—knuckleballers do tend to hold hitters to lower BABIPs

His obviously isn't as fluttery as Wakefield's

It'll be interesting to see if Upton is on the team today after last night's baserunning on CC's double.

If we’re going to be negative, we might as well go to the hilt.

is that smart?

i definitely agree with not agreeing to sign beyond arbitration, but you’d have to think a deal up to then wouldn’t be that much below what he could expect to make in arbitration. and given that he’s a pitcher and has an agressive delivery, might the assurance of 80% of the money up to that point be worth a slight pay cut? he’d still have his free agent years to possibly make boatloads of money assuming he’s still healthy and effective.

So when the Yankee fans bitch about injuries

Maybe we should mention how we have dealt with DL trips to Garza, Kazmir, Percival(twice), Bartlett, Pena

Or how we dealt with suspensions? We also lost Upton and Longo for a few games here and there.

And finally, we lost any hope we had for Gomes

by joeybw on Aug 10, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'd be happy with percival on the DL the rest of the way

not with a real injury, obviously, that would just be mean.

To clarify one of R.J.'s facts about Dickey, when he says that Dickey doesn't have a UCL...

...he doesn’t mean that he lost it to Tommy John surgery or some other sort of procedure. He means that Dickey, due to a genetic defect, was literally born without an UCL. It was never there in the first place. Which would be weird enough for anybody, but is positively insane in a Major League-caliber pitcher, especially given the fact that Dickey didn’t even REALIZE he lacked a UCL until the Rangers gave him a physical prior to signing him as a draft pick. Once they found out that he was missing a, shall we say, fairly critical piece of connective tissue, they dropped their signing bonus from ~$800,000 to something like $50,000. And yet he’s still managed to have a career. Pretty cool stuff.

Next to King Felix, Dickey is easily my favorite pitcher on the Mariners’ staff. He doesn’t have the best stuff, or overwhelming talent, but he’s a knuckleballer who’s succeeded despite obvious physical handicaps (again: HOLY SHIT HE DOESN’T HAVE A UCL) and boneheaded treatment by the M’s organization.

"Maybe Chief has to go and grab somebody from his neck and throw him into the wall."

by esoteric on Aug 10, 2008 2:40 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All of which is to say, I hope he humiliates the Rays.

Hey, I love you guys, but I gotta revert to M’s fandom when a pitcher I actually like is at the plate. As with last night, if he’s out of the game and the bullpen/defense predictably fucks shit up for him, putting a win out of reach, I will be able to pull for the Rays again.

You don't understand: if we were an average team none of us would really feel this way (though I suspect we'd still admire the Rays).

But the fact that we’re THIS FRICKIN’ BAD this season means that we have a shot to get the #1 draft pick for He Who Has Been Named Too Much. Therefore, while we generally want success for pitchers who we like (Felix, Dickey, RRS now), honestly who cares less about meaningless wins? What on earth would be gained by finishing the season with the THIRD worst record in the majors rather than the worst? Nothing, and in fact something extremely tangible would be lost.

It’s not about lacking pride in our team (though we’re a sorry bunch right now), it’s about wanting us to be better in the future.

"Maybe Chief has to go and grab somebody from his neck and throw him into the wall."

by esoteric on Aug 10, 2008 2:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To put it another way: look at what the Rays were able to get out of their several #1 draft picks.

Shit like that really helps a team in need of rebuilding.

"Maybe Chief has to go and grab somebody from his neck and throw him into the wall."

I want to clarify your point, since nobody else has brought it up yet:

Same plan as Gallaraga, Smith, etc...

If he is gonna set us down then all we gotta do is make him work and pray they bring Bautista in again.

Also, after those 46 pitches last night, it’s safe to say their best reliever(in their minds anyway) is not going to be used.

by RATW on Aug 10, 2008 3:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Buchholz got improbably lucky facing a godawful team (to throw his no-hitter). He's gotten arrogant and flaky since then.

He has talent, but it’s a very open question whether he’ll ever put it together at this point. I think Jon Lester is a much more solid bet than Buchholz.

Rotation: Kazmir, Shields, Garza, Price, Sonnanstine (i have much more trust in him than EJ)

If ALL of that happens, we will not be beat, and I am guessing most of it will happen
