Normally I wouldn't post something like this

but since its an off day, why the hell not?

by Vin on Aug 11, 2008 4:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It would be pretty much impossible for us to get him

unless we can somehow void the last year of his contract. I’m not sure if the CBA would even allow such a thing.

But yeah, considering the drop-off he’s had this year, I doubt we would want him.

by Vin on Aug 11, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It wouldn't be allowed

Barry would be a better clubhouse presence, strange as it sounds

if the payroll won't increase for next year, please find $14MM in other player salaries to cut.

assuming the payroll CAN increase by $14MM next year, there are MUCH better ways to spend that money.

With CC AND Longo on the DL... YES!!!

Put Aybar at 3B, Rocco at RF and Sheffield at DH

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Have to say

Considering the circumstances, if CC is out, I’m not sure this is all that bad of an idea. At least he can still field, and maybe the Trop will rejuvinate him a bit. It’s not like the Rays were getting really good production out of CC other than the last week and a half or so.

I think Sheff can still field. Tell me why I’m wrong.

by kericr on Aug 11, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have no idea if you're wrong or not.

I thought he was asking if Carl could field and I knew the answer was yes.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 11, 2008 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OIC

Yeah, assuming his finger-injury is career ending, CC’s problem is that he can’t bat at all. He can still play the field, but we already have too much specialization going on in the OF.

by kericr on Aug 11, 2008 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

He might not be a downgrade from Hinske in the field. I’d much rather have his bat than Floyd’s or Bartlett’s or Aybar’s at DH.

Once CC’s back, he doesn’t help much, though. I don’t think Sheffield/Hinske DH/RF is an improvement on Gross RF/Hinske DH

Bringing in old hitters has worked out awesome in the past. Lets trade away some prospects for Sheff!!!

Sheff...

too much salary for someone were going to cut after this season anyways..if this was the last year in his deal i could possibly see this happening.

If this does go down, it pretty much confirms CC is done for the year and the playoffs if we make it that far

by bcamp34 on Aug 11, 2008 4:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It seems to me that if the Tigers take on his salary...

... and all we have to give up is a fringe guy it would be worth it. He’s not doing so well this year, but I think that with extended playing time he might be worth it. He’s a local boy (my best friend in high school lived like a block away from him. It was rad) and he certainly has VETERAN PRESENCE! He’s also not too bad a defender.

I think Sheffield could do well for us.

Everyone on the Tigers team has been underachieving. Maybe he’ll turn it around if he comes here. He’s always been kind of an RBI machine hasnt he?

Why not bring back WInn?

I mean I would rather just let Ruggiano play and not give up prospects but if we’re looking at Sheffield, why not look at Winn instead?

by amart on Aug 11, 2008 5:26 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

It would make sense

At this point, if the Rays are shopping for an OF, I’m assuming the worst about CC and that he’s done for the year.

Randy Winn would be the closest thing to a direct replacement to CC that we could find right now. Speed, gets on base enough, likes to steal, able to cover a lot of ground in the OF but doesn’t have a great arm, not hitting for a lot of power.

I, unlike most here, think that Sheffield would be a good idea, I’m not convinced that he’s out of gas

by kericr on Aug 11, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That last statement might just be true.

Sheffield seems to be one of those guys who gives a full effort when he feels like it, and to hear him talk lately I have a feeling he doesn’t feel like it right now.

by acelion on Aug 11, 2008 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I think he can be a short-term boost and hopefully be productive throughout the rest of this year. I also think that the Rays should be ready to scarf his contract and jettison him at first blink of him slacking off next year; he is a possible answer to a short-term problem, that being a defecit of outfield depth and power, and he simply won’t be needed on this team next year. If he wants to keep playing for them next year, he’ll need to earn it.

by kericr on Aug 11, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This would help Maddon

He’d look and Upton and say, “Damn, you lazy”. Then he sees Sheff. Then he goes to Upton again and says “I’m sorry Upton, you’re not lazy. At least nowhere near as lazy as that guy.” And then Upton will resign for 8 years and 56 million dollars. And all will be good.

by kericr on Aug 11, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

winn would help

Marcel projection: .279/.339/.417 (Giants’ park probably counters move to AL)

That’s a small step down from Sheffield, but Winn is a very good corner fielder and doesn’t have Sheffield’s baggage. And I think his contract for next year is something like $8MM, although I’m not sure.

I guess Im in the minority who think Shef could see an increase in productivity here

I think his big problem this year has been constant nagging injuries which have made it very hard for him to get any momentum or consistency going. I dont watch Tigers baseball, but thats just my guess based on folloing his player notes in fantasy baseball and Tigers boxscores to see what Mag Pipes is doing.

I think its possible that Shef could still be close to what he was last year, and given that he is a RH power bat with great OBP skills that makes all of this atleast interesting to think about for me

I think he will continue to struggle with the bat if he cant stay in the lineup due to injuries, and he doenst seem to be able to keep the injury big away

The 100 point difference in the BA/OBP is encouraging to me

and I could be convinced that, with consistent playing time, his hits and extra base hits could come up.

I’m not entirely sure I’m against picking him up, but considering that we’d not only have to give up a player in return, but drop someone from the 40-man roster as well makes me weary. Couple that with the money issue, and I don’t really see this working out.

Payroll should not be as big of a concern as long as this team remains competitive

Ticket prices are going to go up next year, and the Rays have got to be seeing massive revenue boosts; not just from attendance. Concession sales, TV ratings, and Merchandising are all way way up from last year. The Rays should be making phat phat bank this year, and that should accellerate into next.

by kericr on Aug 11, 2008 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

see above -- there are MANY better ways to spend an increase of $14MM in payroll

like a real corner outfielder.

Still walking

Also hitting less liners (13.5% instead of career 17%) and striking out more. Not sure if that’s his way of dogging it, if he just isn’t comfortable, or if some of his batspeed has fallen off the table.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 11, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

all of those are possibilities RJ

I really dont know for sure. Im hoping/thinking its because he hanst got into a good flow because of constantly missing time with injury. Maybe I just think that because Im a Shef fan, though. I doubt whether he would even stay healthy here anyways, in which case there’s no way he would be of much use.

If they picked up his entire remaining contract, aside from 2-3 mil, and we had to give up someone like Ruggiano. I would think about it. Oh god here comes the lynching….

by blazinrayz on Aug 11, 2008 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats pretty much exactly my take on it...

and the argument can definitely be made that “passionate” players under perform when they’re disgruntled.

If the red flags can be overcome and he’s dealt for say a PTBNL and takes Floyd’s spot on the roster, then I think I would favor the move.

by Vin on Aug 11, 2008 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sheffield

Sheffield @ 40 can hit circles around Ruggiano. This guy bounces around for a reason and it’s quite simple…maybe he’s not major league talent? Why don’t teams ask for him in trades? He’s young and “a good project” in trade discussions right? He’s never mentioned in talks so not too many other teams are interested either.

by RayGuy3 on Aug 11, 2008 7:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

FWIW, Ruggiano's MLE for his 2008 minor league stats is .273/.331/.477

Dan Johnson’s is .246/.359/.453

Im not so sure about that

Sheffield at 40 = hurt all the time. Plus Im starting to warm up to Ruggiano. I just wouldnt go that far. Its a big question mark whether Shef can stay healthy number 1, and number 2 whether he can get things going again (I think he can). We’ll see how things shake out. I kind of hope w eget him. I dont know why his salary keeps getting brought up. I think we all understand that any logical trade for Sheffield would involve money changing hands also

Saw this via MLBTR (via Peter Gammons)

The Tigers called the Rays, shopping perpetually unhappy DH Gary Sheffield. The Rays’ baseball people were not interested.

So looks like all the talk is moot. Though Peter Gammons is pretty out of touch in the trade rumors iirc.

Peter Gammons = King of all Bostonia

The guy’s such a damn homer it’s rediculous. I was watching BBTN a few days back and they got on the topic of David Ortiz falling into a slump, he proceeded to start this epic rant about how Ortiz isn’t slumping because the numbers that are most important are the numbers of the players around him, so even if he isn’t producing numbers that are on par with his career production, he isn’t in a slump because the players around him in the lineup continue to produce. He actually started frothing at the mouth and slurring his speech; I thought he was going to have another aneurysm.

Point being, I take little regard to anything King Gammons says. Maybe next time we’ll get lucky and he’ll actually have a stroke.

We have to do something!

As a Rays fan, I’m very worried with Crawford & Longoria being out. I want the Rays to win NOW! They really should go get Barry or Sheffield, or somebody. Baldelli & Ruggiano are not the answers, especially given Baldelli’s track record with injuries. Getting Bonds or Sheffield would send a message to the rest of the players on the team that the Rays are in it to win it this year & I think it would energize the club. I’m tired of the Rays(Friedman in particular) just standing pat. We have to win the division. We can’t let the Red Sox & Yanks catch us.

by drrub on Aug 13, 2008 2:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Friedman has no idea what he's doing

burning 14 mil on a guy who may be slightly better than Ruggiano, even thats debateable, is a great move. i think the Rays know they are in it to win it, they are leading the division. bringing in old guys and paying them more than anyone else on the current team may not send the best message either.
