Longoria ---> DL
Executive VP Andrew Freidman said they expect Longoria to be out about three weeks, give or take a few days. The fracture is nondisplaced, which is a good thing, he said.

Ruggie on his way
The Rays are calling up Justin. Given a chance to play regularly I think he’ll be fine. He’s no replacement for Longo but I think he’ll do okay on his own

how does a bruise turn out to be a fracture when you get a mother fucking x-ray?
don’t these morons know to get a CT on such small bones?

Swelling makes it hard to see these things does it not?

Yes.
I had an ankle injury and had an X-ray and they thought it was broken, then a week later said just strained. After 4 months of rehab and me still complaining I got an MRI and they saw I tore ligaments, which they could not see because of the swelling when I got my X-ray right after the injury.

Fuck this
If it was like anything but a wrist injury then I wouldn’t be nearly as upset as I am. Wrist injuries can ruin a guy just like that.

The good news is that it's not "broken"
It’s such a small fracture that I can’t see it affecting him long term at all.

Press Conference
Andrew is scheduled to give a press conference at the bottem of the hour.
by TampaMet on Aug 11, 2008 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
At least its not serious
He really thought he’d be ok enough to play tomorrow. I’m sure this is just a precautionary action.

Wrist injuries are ALWAYS serious
by Kevin Gengler on Aug 11, 2008 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Serious in the sense it's something to worry about for a while
He could be back after the 15 days, but I’d be surprised if he’d be fully healthy then.
by Kevin Gengler on Aug 11, 2008 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If there was ligament/tendon damage I would agree
but since its a fracture, and there wasn’t enough damage in the initial x-ray to even tell that he broke anything, I’m not horribly worried about it… yet.
by Vin on Aug 11, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was before he knew it was fractured. He was hoping it would feel better after the day off, but with no progress they discovered the break.

Also: Kinda freaky how Longoria/Brignac were always "together"
Whenever people talked about one, the other came up. That ended this year, but both go down in August with wrist injuries after being HBP. Brignac’s, btw, is a season-ender.

Though Briggy's was broken, Longoria's is "just" fractured

Having been there
A fracture is a break. It is just the gentle way to say it.
by rglass44 on Aug 11, 2008 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
As I understand it
A fracture is a partial break. A break is, well, a clean break. It really depends what kind of fracture it is.
by Kevin Gengler on Aug 11, 2008 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
From personal experience :(
a fracture is a crack in the bone, while a broken bone is cleanly broken. I know in leg injuries fractures can sometimes be worse but I am not sure about wrist injuries. I just hope there is not ligament/tendon damage.

unfortunately I would guess Boston would block any move we might make to replace Evan.

Out of curiousity...
I went back and looked at Chase Utley’s broken hand from last year (sustained the same way). He was injured in the July 27 game and returned on August 26. His average did not drop after the injury and he lost only 20 points off his OPS.
Let’s hope for a similar recovery time and performance thereafter.

Acutally, it might not be terrible if he took his spot
He needs to be on the 25 man before September in order to make the playoff roster (I think) so Hammell might be the one to go. Some of the call ups could take over mop up duties – Nieman, Talbot, etc. I just dont seeing us cut him before Miller – either way you slice it, one of them has to go.

i'm not sure i wouldn't rather have zobrist or aybar at 3B than hinske
it’s close, at least when you consider fielding. if the Rays go that route, i wonder who Hinske kicks out of the outfield (or Baldelli from DH? yeah, i favor that one)
oh, crap, i forgot Bartlett’s not back in the field, yet.

What about Johnson?
Hitting .380 since the all star break and playing third base a lot recently. Do you think he is a capable third baseman? Already has a single of Jo Jo Reyes tonight. This guy has been mashing at Durham, especially in the last two months, just waiting for a chance. Could this be it?
by BossmanJunior333 on Aug 11, 2008 7:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Huff
Ive been reading that Huff could possible be passed through waivers (which I find hard to believe especially with the Twinkies having a higher waiver position). That would be an interesting move though. Could play third or RF and only has 2 million remaining on his contract before he is a free agent.
by BossmanJunior333 on Aug 11, 2008 7:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's like injecting yourself
with a syringe full of cancer cells. Huff is an ass and wouldn’t fit in with this team. He would disrupt the clubhouse, and they REALLY don’t need that right now.

I've been waiting for this to happen
So we’re unfortunately stringing together some injuries…it’s not a big deal. BE HAPPY ITS HAPPENING NOW, and not at the beginning of the season, when we could have lost confidence in our average players, before we built up our momentum. Now we KNOW we’re a first place caliber team, the trick will be to see if we can keep producing. We know we CAN, but WILL we? I think so. Our game-making hits usually arent coming from the stars…it’s people like Gabe and Willy, at least as of late.
