Two of my favorite (and successful) parking ticket appeal letters…

To whom it may concern:
I am writing to appeal the enclosed parking ticket, 547906181, placed on my legally-parked white Mercury Sable on October 21.
The reason for the ticket is a mystery. The "comments" section of the ticket reads, in part: "VEH HASANOTHER TICKET ON CAR REG TO A BMW 4DR MAINE COLOR 8 ISSUED AT 10 19." My best guess is that somebody parked their BMW illegally nearby, received a ticket, and flippantly and arbitrarily placed the ticket on my car’s windshield. It doesn’t seem fair or logical to bill me for this stranger’s act.
Further baffling is the "location" section of the ticket, which reads "172 CALUMET ST." My car was parked on St. Alphonsus Street.
I can’t imagine this is anything but a simple mix-up. Please contact me if any further action on my part is expected.

I am writing to appeal the enclosed parking ticket, 559581503, placed on my white Mercury Sable parked on Fisk Terrace in my brand-new neighborhood of Allston on Monday, August 20.
The reason for my appeal is the misleading signage at this location. There are two signs on the nearby post. One is a simple "no parking" symbol—but right beneath it is a sign prohibiting parking on Thursdays, when street-sweeping takes place.
If there is never to be any parking at that spot at any time, then why is there an additional sign announcing the street-sweeping schedule? Based on the years in which I’ve owned a car in my previous neighborhood of Mission Hill, I believe the street-sweeping signs, despite featuring no-parking symbols, indicate that it is okay to park in those spots except for days when street-sweeping takes place. The two signs together simply don’t make sense. Parking is prohibited there always, but especially on Thursdays? That’s like the edict in George Orwell’s Animal Farm that "all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others."
Frankly, given the number of signs that exist on the streets of my beloved native Boston that are faded to the point of illegibility—and based on the fact that there was another car parked there, confirmation enough for me, as a new (as of that day) Allston resident with only my Mission Hill experience to draw on—I assumed that the top sign, with its large amount of blank space under the no-parking symbol, once contained specific qualifiers now lost to the ages, and that the street-sweeping sign was placed under it in a stop-gap attempt to clarify the matter.
As it is, the tandem of signs does nothing but mislead would-be parkers. If it is never okay to park there, the street-sweeping sign should be removed, at minimum. Better still, a new sign should be erected that reads "NO PARKING ANY TIME," if that is what is meant.
Kindly dismiss the ticket in question, and please forgive the length of this letter.

...I also had one to the City of Cambridge from when they ticketed me twice for the same infraction—once at 11:55 p.m. and again at 12:03 a.m. the “next day.” In that (now-disappeared) letter, also successful, I compared this obdurate enforcement to something out of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass.
The best part is that I’ve probably never even read Looking Glass or Animal Farm.
