Are the Rays trying to get Raul Ibanez?

Big Ken Rosenthal is reporting Washburn and Ibanez have been claimed.

SPECULATE AWAY BIG KEN:

If the Mariners were looking for another chance to trade left-hander Jarrod Washburn and outfielder Raul Ibanez, this is it.

Both Washburn and Ibanez were claimed on waivers Tuesday, according to major-league sources.

The claiming teams are not yet known, but Mariners have until 1:30 p.m. ET Thursday to work out a deal with those respective clubs.

The Yankees were not the team that claimed Washburn, sources say. They had interest in the pitcher before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, but consider their hitting to be a greater problem than their starting pitching. The White Sox, another team in need of starting pitching, have indicated that they do not consider Washburn a fit.

As for Ibanez, the Rays are looking for a hitter after losing both left fielder Carl Crawford and third baseman Evan Longoria to injuries, but the extent of their interest in Ibanez is not known.

Doubt it

There’s almost no way the Red Sox don’t put a claim on Ibanez just to block us.

Free agent after this year

Not sure whether he’d be Type A or Type B, but I think he’s Type A. Thus, any trade offer would need to be better than the two draft picks the Mariners would get for him.

I'd be stunned if he wasn't Type A

Even after a disappointing slump last season he ended up with respectable enough numbers, and he’s been a remarkably consistent producer over time (which is what Elias cares about) with an excellent season so far this year. I’d like to see Raul go to the Rays, but the Rays would have to give us something better, at the very least, than what we’d get with a first round + sandwich pick in the 2009 draft.

arbitration might be accepted, and that's not a good thing

decent risk, though.

don’t love the prospect of him or hinske in the outfield, though. rather have Winn or what we have with Hinske at DH.

No chance Ibanez accepts arbitration. None whatsoever.

Given his year, his generally good health, and his track record, he’s in line for a 2/3 yr deal with some poor team overpaying for him. (I weep for a team that signs him to be anything but a DH.)

Aurilia

If Aurilia is added , it better come with the waiver-trade for Ibanez or I’m really disappointed. What does Aurilia do for us other than he’s right handed? Ibanez I could most definitely live with and here’s why….If Crawford comes back before playoffs he slots back into left field and Ibanez moves to right. Not excited about Aurilia though

Bonds

I realize the last part is a possibility being he’s so close to our games right now…but… I don’t see Friedman being so “bold”. I would fall down happy if we signed him because even at his age, it allows us to have some “scare” to our lineup.

Seattle sports radio KJR has confirmed

That it is the Rays who have claimed Raul Ibanez.

Good! Now give us something worthwhile.

How about, huh I dunno, Brignac and Hellickson?

Al Reyes and Edwin Jackson

(oh wait, I thought this trade was for Jeff Clement)

Seriously, fuck the radio

According to them we claimed Gary Sheffield and traded for Huston Street.

...I’ll wait until its in print.

And traded for Jason Bay

oh wait that was Chastain. Beejus I hate that guy.

from a Mariner's beat writer
I had breakfast with an AL scout this morning and he told me the Mariners had not put Ibanez on waivers. The scout has a message service that tells him whenever a player from any team is placed on waivers or made available for any reason (released, DFA’d etc.). Ibanez has not been put out there or he would know. His team, he said, would have put in a claim—as would most others around the game with a shot at contending. This same scout confirmed to me that Washburn was put on waivers last week. From what I’m hearing, I may have been pre-mature in writing that he’d already cleared them.

for the record

Ibanez is an awful fielder—we’re talking Manny bad. His bat is respectable, but he would be the DH, with Hinske in an OF spot.

It's not about his arm, it's about his GLOVE.

Seriously, go too Lookout Landing, scroll down the main screen until you find the sidebar section entitled “Raul Ibanez Takes Pride In His Defense,” and click on each of the links provided there. It’s unbelievably funny/depressing.

Following your suggestion, I checked the clips of Ibanez at LL .. I’ll never make fun of Hinske again.

I also like how they like him as LF in quotation marks on the GDT lineup. Outstanding.

-10 runs in left so far this year. same thing last year.

have I mentioned Bobby Abreu’s at -23 runs so far this year. obviously some weird flukiness in there, but jeez. why the Yankees would DH Nady to play Abreu in the field is beyond me.

well someone's lying,

A”ccording to Ken Rosenthal, Mariners players Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez were claimed on waivers yesterday. The Ms have until tomorrow afternoon to work out a deal with the claiming teams. Rosenthal says the Yankees did not claim Washburn.

At the least, the Mariners have a chance to unload Washburn’s contract. Ibanez is inexpensive, so they’ll want quality prospects in return. The Mariners can also elect to keep both players if they don’t like the offers.

The American League received first crack at the two Mariners, in the following order (omitting non-contenders):

Tigers
Rangers
Blue Jays
Yankees
Twins
White Sox
Red Sox
Rays
Angels”

Wonder who would have claimed Washburn?

Only teams on that list I could see might be interested in him are the Rangers and the Red Sox if the Yankees didn’t claim.

Visiting from LoneStarBall

And you guys dont need to trade for Ibanez. Granted, he is a good player, but when we (the Rangers) tried getting him, they asked for one of our top prospects, Chris Davis, who is beginning to deliver big time on the major league level. IMO, he wouldn’t be worth any of your top 5 or maybe even your top 10 prospects.
Lastly, I want to wish you all the best of luck, and hopefully you guys can help keep both the Red Sox and Yankees out of the playoffs, which would make it the best playoffs ever.

I didn't hear about the Davis thing.

That is remarkable. I swear Pelekoudas just flips to the team’s BA rankings and picks out a few names from the top.

10:54am: The Twins didn’t win the claim on Ibanez, according to Joe Christensen. Ibanez doesn’t expect a trade, though the Mariners have not discussed an extension with him.
