Huff, Payton, Millar clear waivers
For what it is worth, the Baltimore Sun is reporting that all three passed through waivers unclaimed. Surely none are great at this point, but Payton and Millar both his lefties well historically, and are a lot cheaper than Huff. Plus Payton could play left until Crawford is back. I wonder if the Rays will kick the tires on Payton. Given the Bradford deal, it seems the O's are willing to deal with us.
The question is whether Payton offers a big enough upgrade over Ruggs defensively to merit the deal.
Payton seems to be the only useable outfielder to have cleared waivers at this point.

Jay Payton is terrible
If Payton was playing in Colorado maybe his stats would not suffer. But he plays in Baltimore which is a pretty good hitters park too. Seems like a worthless pickup to me.
Outfielders worth picking up in order are Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Aubrey Huff, and Kenny Lofton.

$8M is not the important figure.
That is a quantity that does not matter relative to value. If we were to pick up Andruw Jones and his inflated contract or Sheffield it would be one thing because they are not producing, but Huff is having a great year in what has been an above average career.
Year Team PA wOBA RV/PA bRAA RV600 $bRAA
2008 BAL 505 0.387 0.049 24.7 29.4 $323,886.64
To keep the math easy we will look at a couple of other guys with bRAA in the positive range. And I can’t find reliable contract info for this year or next so I will be looking at 2007. If only every team had a spreadsheet of the teams obligations over the next half decade much like Draysbay, alas.

I could keep going, but I think you get the point. I did these by hand using Statscorner.com and B-Ref so if you catch a mistake that is why. Something that should probably be continued when I get more time, whenever that is.
