This offseason
Instead of hanging onto our incredible stock in minor league pitching, why not trade a Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson for a couple top-line minor league hitting prospect like an Angel Salome, Michael Brantley, or Matt Gamel from the absolutely LOADED Milwuakee affiliate? This would give us what we need now and we would not waste our prospects on overvalued, proven ML starters at the trade deadline next year or in this winter meetings.

now there's a crazy, productive idea!
I wonder what the Brewers would see as a fair trade.

Can we just move Davis or Hell boy for Dexter Fowler, he is going to be a beast

Not that the Rockies would trade him, but which player gets moved out of CF? Upton or Fowler?
But Fowler isn’t going anywhere.. a true five-tool guy with a great eye at the plate. Maybe they’d take BJ Upton. Heh.

Forget Gamel, I want Corey Hart.
I don’t really like trading prospects for prospects. It’s usually better to wait until they are ready or nearly ready then make the trades. Niemann, Talbot, Sonny, and Jackson should be the ones traded this offseason (not all of them, of course).
Other options for RF that I like are Matt Joyce (DET), Franklin Gutierrez (CLE), Wladimir Balentien (SEA), and Matt Kemp (LAD).
Some outside-the-box ideas (in no particular order) would be
Brett Carrol, FLA. Has destroyed AAA pitching the last two years, although in a very good hitters park.
Brent Clevlen, DET. Has high K rates, but lots of power, a strong arm, and some speed.
Steve Pearce, PIT. With Moss, McCutchen, and McClouth in the OF and LaRoche at 1B, with Tabata, Alvarez, and possibly Walker a couple of years away, Pearce could very well be the odd man out, and could be a buy-low possibility.
Joe Mather, STL. They have a crowded OF as is, and Colby Rasmus will be up next year.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, TEX. Would DH, backup at C and 1B. Still has tons of power potential, blocked at 1B by Chris Davis and C is crowded. Apparently Boston may make a run at him this offseason.

Simply because I’m the president of the Steve Pearce fan club. The guy can rake. I was catching a live bp he was taking back in Feb 2007 and I predicted great things for him. His best position is by far 1st and would be an average defensive RF at best. Neimann for Pearce straight up seems fair.
And for the record, McCutchen is very over-rated. I’m a homer for local guys, but he just doesn’t do it for me.

A few of those yes
I can’t say I’m that impressed with Clevlyn or Mather though, and Alberquerque is the worst hitters’ park in the minors, so you can discount Carroll’s stats there considerably.
I’d love to get Saltalamacchia, although I suspect we’d have to give up Davis (or possibly Jackson) to get him. Pearce might be an option, but he has very high Gomes potential.
Honestly, I see no reason to protect Davis and/or Hellickson as much as the org has though. I’m not sure that the marginal difference between either of those two and Sonnanstine is great enough to warrant having a worse offense just so we can have even more pitching down the road. Sometimes you need to trade the better chip, not the worse chip, to get what fits the team best.

You mean Dallas McPherson isn't really a 40 HR hitter?
by RATW on Aug 18, 2008 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He may, or may not be...
Injuries seem to be what derailed his career up to this point. Or at least played a major factor.

Home: 1.144 OPS
Away: .869 OPS
Minorleaguesplits.com gives him a MLE of 748 OPS w/ 24 HR.
Not saying he can’t be a major league contributor, but Albuquerque is almost certainly inflating his stats.

I'm not that impressed with Clevlen either, he has a crazy K rate, but he does have power.
He’s not the best option, or necessarily a good one, but he is a reasonable option.
I do like Mather, though, I like him as much as Pearce. Carroll’s name is out there because of impressive numbers, not much else. He’s currently on the restricted list (I don’t know why, though), and despite destroying the PCL for two straight years, he hasn’t gotten a chance with the Marlins, even when Willingham was injured. He’s more of a last ditch plan, similar to Clevlen.
I was thinking (hoping) Jackson would be the price for Saltalamacchia. The thing is, as proven major leaguers, Jackson and Sonny have MORE trade value than Davis and Hellickson, especially to teams that want to contend next year, such as the Brewers, Cardinals, Rangers, etc. Teams such as the Nationals, Pirates, etc. would prefer Davis and Hellickson, I’m sure.

According to rotoworld, Carroll is on the 60-day DL due to a separated shoulder and ligament damage. Collided into a wall vs. the Giants.

Why DH?
He plays RF, but has also played some CF in the minors. Unless he has a noodle arm, no reason to DH him.

He is average at best in the field....
Adam Dunn like bat though

although it’s tough to trade prospects for MLB talent with teams who are good. Milwaukee might be motivated to create room for their own prospects, though.
of those options, I think Gutierrez is the most reasonable, although I’m pretty sure the Indians know what they have with him. he’s a good center fielder playing a corner spot. hopefully his bat comes around.

Matthew Moore
Rays fans, can any of you provide a scouting report on your 2007 7th-rounder? I read that he was throwing 94 from the left side in high school. What’s his breaking ball like?
Is it normal for the Rays to hold a player with his initial (albeit limited) success back for a second season in the Appy League?
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

I don't know any more than that.
When he was drafted, it was reported he sat at 88-91, and could crank it up to 94, but offspeed stuff and command needed work.
This regime has drafted and signed a ton of high school pitchers the last two years (6 in 2007, 5 in 2008). With all those pitchers, international players, and some JUCO pitchers mixed in, there aren’t enough rotation spots to go around. Out of the 6 that were signed in 2007, only Nick Barnese (3rd round pick) was promoted to Hudson Valley. Moore and Kevin Chavez are starting at Princeton, and Chris Luck and Kyle Ayers are still relievers, despite pitching very well last year. Unfotunately, It seems that it has become normal for the Rays to hold back high school pitchers.
Spending two years at Princeton shouldn’t be a concern. For a guy like Moore, he would still make it to the majors at age 24 given a normal progression, sooner if he excells. The biggest concern is that some of these guys aren’t getting the innings they need (Luck and Ayers especially).
If the Rays are going to continue to draft high numbers of high school pitchers (which I think they should) as well as funnel players from the international academies through rookie ball, then they really need to add another rookie-level affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. It would also help alleviate the crunch among position players at Princeton. Luis Marchena, a high school SS drafted this year, only has 25 AB’s. Dustin Biell, Ty Morrison, Brian Bryles, Ramon Novas, and DJ Jones are all legitimate OF prospects, but they only have room for 3 of them in the OF at one time. It would also allow them to being more international players to the United States and get playing time.

I posted a FanShot at BrewCrewBall about possible trades with the Rays
A few responses, but not too many, yet.
On idea that came up is Hellickson for Salome. I don’t know anything on Salome — what do you guys think about him?

Catcher with a BIG bat, but probably won't stay at catcher.
Which probably means that they need a catcher for the future. Might they be interested in Jaso?

isn't Jaso also a big bat with a small chance to stick at catcher?

Jaso has a much better chance to stay at catcher
from what I understand, but that’s a very limited understanding of the defensive abilities of both, so I could be completely wrong.

Brewers don't need a catcher.
We have Lucroy tearing it up at high A and our first rond pick, Brett Lawrie, said he wants to be in the majors in two years or so.
Wait, what?

Salome is short
Very short. It’s not so much that he doesn’t have a chance at sticking at catcher, just that there isn’t a precedent for a catcher his size in the past 80 or so years. He’s not GREAT defensively either, but I really think that it has more to do with it that he’s 5’7" 150 soaking wet and in high heels.

by Brickhaus on Aug 18, 2008 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Typo
150 is low on the weight, probably more like 170, but point still stands. He’s listed at 5’9" 195, but pretty much everyone agrees that’s an extreme exaggeration.
Hellickson is still a better prospect than Salome at this point. The Brewers would probably need to throw in someone significant for that one to work.
