The FO knew it was a horrible pick too. They didn't care.
The scouts wanted McCutchen, someone in some ownership group (I’ve heard Namoli and Sternberg both blamed, so I don’t know) over-ruled the pick and said go with the cheap guy. But yeah, it’s frustrating.

Which is frustrating, but understandable. Sternberg would either be making himself look bad and either way, you can't rip Townsend when he's still in the org.
The most frustrating thing is that his curve, which was his best pitch wouldn’t curve and his fastball was topping out at 86 when we signed him. It was clear his arm was toast and they’d just be praying surgery would fix it.

Frangraphs tracks it. at any point int he game, you can approximate the Rays’ chances of winning the game. after something happens, you’ve got a new probability of winning. the change in probability is assigned to whoever was involved. add up those changes to judge how much a player helped or hurt his team.
Because of the Hamilton walk, Fangraphs had the Rays as 5% less likely to win the game (but still upwards of an 85% chance overall.) Now, this system assumes average players, so the specifics of the situation can affect the real probabilities (like Hamilton is a much better hitter than Byrd and Hamilton would have had the platoon advantage.)
