RaysIndex bad mouthing DRaysBay...

Scroll down to Devil Rays Webtopia(not sure why th Devil is there), and they decided to make fun of the posters here for timing runners to first base Saturday night.  Personally, I dont have a roblem with BJ being benched...just hold every player to the same standard...whether that player is Baldelli, Gross, or Aybar.  Dont use the times to say it is ok for BJ to loaf.  Use those times to say that other players should feel the wrath of Maddon.

good for them,

i will be the first, and have been, person to stick up for this site. but i applaud them for pointing out the idiocy and illogical reasoning in that post.

DO you have a problem with BJ loafing?

If so, you should have a problem with other players loafing. I dont like when posters try to excuse BJ’s bad behavior by posting other player’s times…but it does illustrate that other players are doing the same thing, and they shouldnt be.

by td32 on Aug 18, 2008 11:47 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

of course i do,

but trying to excuse a wrong by saying “look, everyone else is doing it!” stopped being viable in the 5th grade…

I said it doesnt excuse BJ's lack of hustle....

But it does point out other players are doing….so why arent they being pulled as well.

i agree that's a dumb argument

but I don’t think it was really the argument being made.

The defense of Upton wasn’t intended to excuse his lack of hustle. It was to point out that he didn’t deserve all the crap being given to him by radio hacks and many Rays fans. He sure as heck should hustle. But why attack his character (and nobody else’s) when he really is a hard worked and team player other than the hustle thing?

defending the player from unfair fishwrap and radio shock-jocks was never the main point of the post,

it was an attempt to excuse upton by pointing out that everyone is doing it. he tried to downplay not only significance, but the appropriateness of action by saying “why upton? why isn’t anyone else in trouble?”

by davidsmarch on Aug 18, 2008 4:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, I'm asking why all the players arent being held to the same standard...

Are you fine with guys not hustling? I think getting benched will help BJ long term.

Fine. I'll bite

“RaysIndex bad mouthing DRaysBay”

why are there never any posts on here about all the times we have written something positive about DRB or defended DRB and RJ from criticism? How many thousands of posts have been on DRB? And how many have we “criticized”? 3? maybe 4? I have linked to this site and the other Rays blogs thousands of times. 99.99% of them have been positive links.

How often does DRB suport other Rays blogs? And believe me, we could really give two sh!ts if they do. Somehow RI has survived 3 years without the support of DRB and we will continue to be fine without it.

We're trying to curb cursing from non-game day threads.

Also I think I’ve linked to OutsPerSwing at least weekly in the past month, but I’m not really keeping count.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 18, 2008 1:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The support comment irks me.

What exactly am I supposed to link to from your site Cork? Recaps? A year ago, two years ago? Look, this site is mainly about analysis. If someone does something analyzing the team I usually link to it, if it’s a recap with general stuff I don’t see the point in linking to it.

That’s a buddy buddy thing, and you don’t care to make friends, remember?

I like raysindex better and read it everyday

I’m sure there are alot of people that do too. IMO the professor is a very humorous and creative writer. Thats very appealing to me.

I’m not saying I dont like this site so dont jump all over me. This site is good for updates and out side the box stats.

Basically, I like both but I go to Raysindex first.

by dannythegreat on Aug 18, 2008 2:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I read both sites everyday.

Raysindex is more humorous and has more recaps and minor league updates. This site has more stats plus has the Fanshots/Posts, and game threads.

If you were on the site more you would know

"not sure why the Devil is there" why is there a "D" is(in) "DRays Bay"?

This was addressed earlier this season. The site name has been out there for a few seasons now, and the guys running the show didn’t want to change it for reasons they explained that made sense.

by rayweaver on Aug 18, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

PS

and before all the overly-sensitive out there jump all over me…I am not making fun of the name “DRays Bay”. The Devil is still in “Devil Rays Webtopia” for consistency, nostalgia, and sentimentality. Not everybody wants to ignore the original moniker as if it never existed.

by The Professor on Aug 18, 2008 1:39 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I read your website quite a bit....

I just thought it was a low blow. To me, I dont see a problem with the guys timing other runners to first base. If Maddon expects players to hustle all the time, as he should, be consistent with it.

by td32 on Aug 18, 2008 1:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

"and before all the overly-sensitive out there jump all over me"

C’mon man. You’re the one over here defending your post while I don’t see a single comment on said post defending draysbay.com.

There’s really no need for this. I don’t understand why you feel it necessary to be so… well, abrasive.

by Vin on Aug 18, 2008 2:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm comfortable in the content I produce.

I know there was a ton of mixed feelings concerning that post, and it’s not something I plan on consistently doing, but for every hundred posts I’m bound for a stupid one and apparently most people thought that was stupid.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 18, 2008 1:47 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Coaches use stopwatches...

Sportscenter used a stopwatch on Manny. One was used on BJ. Why shouldnt all players be held to the same standard. It doesnt excuse BJ, but it shows there are some inconsistentcies.

by td32 on Aug 18, 2008 1:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In the paper they compared Upton's time to an average runner.

Hence why I did the same. I can see why people thought that was stupid and in retrospect it wasn’t my best idea.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 18, 2008 1:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I completely disagree...

The only reason it could be labeled stupid is if you are trying to condone BJ’s actions. If other players arent hustling, shouldnt that be pointed out as well?

My last comment about Upton and hustle (at least for today.)

If you grimace when you run, it looks like you’re really busting your rear. If you jog while grimacing you look like a middle aged guy in a beer league getting ready to have a heart attack or Willy Aybar running to first.

Upton’s jogging speed is probably better than most of the other guys top speed, but he doesn’t grimace. He has the same expression on his face when he does well and when he does poorly, which is generally supposed to be a good thing. But when he’s running to first with his deadpan, poker tournament expression, it looks like he doesn’t care. I reject the notion that anyone can make it to the big leagues and not care.

So my suggestion to BJ is to at least hire a facial expression coach. I have an extensive background in community theater, and would be pleased to take him on as a client for a modest salary. First lesson would be on the house, of course — the grimace.

by Fox 71 on Aug 18, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

People want good sports and nobody to put attention on themselves though

Don’t they? So why do emotionless players like Ben Grieve get ran out of town for “not caring” when they’re doing exactly what people have taught them to do? Upton’s curses after a K or pop out are pretty loud, basically equal to Hinske’s, and when he thinks there’s a bad call he usually lets the umpire know.

I’m asking what do people really want:
A) A guy who doesn’t make a ton of faces and doesn’t really show he “cares” other than how he plays.
or
B) A guy who goes nuts when he does wrong, and “draws the attention to himself.”

Basically J.D. Drew or Kevin Youkilis?

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 18, 2008 2:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

People will always choose Kevin Youkilis...

and there’s just no accounting for that.

by Vin on Aug 18, 2008 2:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, if you want to be popular.

9 times out of 10 the general public will pick the popular player over the one who is putting up superior numbers…

Its stupid, but what can you do?

by Vin on Aug 18, 2008 3:09 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Please do not EVER wish

Youkilis was on this team. Stats aside that guy is a jagoff

Well this is the 3rd year he has seen game action

The fact that Longo is in his true rookie season speaks volumes to the adjustments he has made throughout the year. I think a lot of that goes on Henderson, who really has not gotten much praise. Granted we don’t have the most dynamic innings, but he has really impressed working counts, getting your pitch, and being productive once you get it. Aki, Gross, Beejus, Longo, all work counts pretty well.

I have it on good authority that Babe Ruth grimaced

Now I’m not saying Ruth was another Upton, but a grimace is a grimace.

(And can anyone confirm the rumor that the Dodgers are looking at signing Ruth and Gehrig, seeing as how they both put up solid numbers in their prime, are now past their prime, and in fact are dead.)

I also have it on good authority that Ruth no longer does that

I haven’t been able to get confirmation one way or another on Gehrig.

In fact, Ruth’s having cleaned up his act to an extent fits in quite well with the new approach of the Dodger front office to only go after “good character” guys. Which explains why they have shown no interest at all in the late Ty Cobb.

by Fox 71 on Aug 18, 2008 4:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cobb could be on my team any day of the week

I’d probably let some guys hold him down and let Larry Doby get a few free ones in until we had some chemistry, though.
