I've always wondered how Garland wins so many games

he seems to give up a lot of hits, a normal amount of walks, and doesn’t strike out a ton, but the guy is nearly always near the league leaders in Wins.

Luck?

I put him at . 3.75 years of good "luck"

Year Team PA K% BB% kL% kS% uBB% iBB% HBP%
2005 CHA 901 12.76% 5.22% 2.22% 10.54% 4.88% 0.33% 0.78%
2006 CHA 896 12.50% 4.58% 2.68% 9.82% 4.13% 0.45% 0.67%
2007 CHA 883 11.10% 6.46% 3.62% 7.47% 6.12% 0.34% 0.45%
2008 ANA 655 10.38% 7.02% 3.21% 7.18% 6.72% 0.30% 0.92%

He is 57-37 since the beginning of 2005 with declining K rates, increasing BB rates, and mid 40’s GB rates. When he regresses it should be pretty hard.

doesn't explain all of it, though

I’m still working on that table I posted yesterday, because simply comparing bullpen WPA to sum(WPA/LI) includes one form of bullpen performance that’s not attributable to skill. We should credit a team for optimizing the way its relievers are used — the good ones in high-leverage situations and the poor ones in low-leverage situations. But we shouldn’t credit a team for having each pitcher pitch better when he’s in high-leverage situations than when he’s in low-leverage situations. Yes, the second one helps “explain” the Pythag gap, but it’s not a skill. There’s also the issue that the Angels have played games that have higher leverage situations than others teams. Is playing those types of games a skill beyond having the relievers to keep them close? Maybe to a certain degree, but not totally.

Anyway, giving the Angels 100% credit for their bullpen, you can explain about 4 games of their nine-run Pythag gap. And you can explain about 75% of the Rays gap.

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 18, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

one reason for the gap

is that when a team falls behind 8 or so runs they go to their long man and he is usaully their worst pitcher, and allows the other team to score more and more runs

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

by Steal Home on Aug 18, 2008 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

right

using leverage and WPA allows you to “remove” those runs from the Angels RA ledger. giving up 5 runs when the plate appearances are 10% as important as normal really only counts as .5 runs.

and using leverage and WPA allows you to increase the importance of preventing runs in close ballgames. holding down a one-run lead in the ninth is only one run saved, but WPA counts it as more like three or four, because the LI of that situation is around three or four.

by comparing these leveraged runs allowed/prevented (in the form of WPA) to the actual runs allowed/prevented shows how well the skills of a bullpen were optimized: great pitchers in tight games and crappy pitchers in blowouts.

So with payroll increasing next year to ~55 million...

…do you think the FO goes after any free agents? Even with the increase in payroll, their revenue stream from this season should cover that easily, and then some.

I would look for us to do more in the trade market than the FA one.

we have a lot of guys that could get moved this off-season. Not all will, but I will be dissapointed if some dont.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 18, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They have tons of depth at pitching, especially SP

And outfield depth is an obvious need right now. I think they may make a run at a really big bat for DH.

Given that we have Jaso and Dan Johnson...

While it wouldn’t be the best option, Hinske at RF might not be horrible, and he could probably be resigned on the cheap(ish).

I'd have to agree...

At the very least one of either Jackson, Sonny, or Niemann needs to be dealt…

I’d be surprised if we didn’t land someone like Rivera, Ethier, or Kemp.

there certainly could be cheap free agents available

but i agree that the trade market is a better place to take on salary. time to trade an arm or two for a bat or two.

looking at this list of free agents, I don’t see an outfielder that is both decent and in our price range.

He pitches to contact more than the average guy

Correct me if I’m wrong, but he still has a pretty high BABIP.

but is that his doing?

and he’s somewhat stingy with the homeruns, right? so the extra runners won’t score on those as much.

BABIP excludes HR's

sprised you didn’t know that. Seriously though I would think BABIP regression takes place over a longer span of time than say OPB or SLG. Which could signal more of a trend than people realize.

i know that -- the HR comment was a different point.

Sonny’s different from Shields in that he allows more runners, but doesn’t give up the longball. You wouldn’t want errors with Shields because they’re more likely to score on a homerun.

(not that you want errors with any pitcher, it’s just that there are different arguments for who suffers more more errors and i don’t think it’s easy to know that question without a good study of it. intuition can’t manage the details.)

I've always thought of Shields as a Catfish Hunter type of guy

He will give up some dingers, but for the most part they are with the bases empty. I think it is a part of being aggressive more than anything, and when he has guys on he starts to tone that back.

Price with 4 walks tonights

two to a .237 hitter with 0 HRs. He’s still giving up weak contact for the most part, but his first two AAA starts have been less than impressive so far.

He still is getting dinked to death

the third run he gave up was on an infield single, but you put yourself in that position with the walks. All three runs he’s given up have started with 2 out walks.

Gurerro smartly hit the brakes.

Last chance for Sonny to escape this inning w/o giving up a run.

where do you get unfocused, though? and do you mean lazy other than not hustling? do you know of other times in his life he’s lazy?
