Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Rocco Tonight?

He has come back to town and with Rogers pitching there is a need for a right handed at bat in RF!!!!!!

And to take up space was at the game last night and was wondering what was said about the fly ball that BJ seemed to misplace and was hit off the wall.

I guess I’m in the minority, I don’t want any of our current players DFA’d for Baldelli.

how about gomes, floyd, aybar? rocco is better than all 3 of them when healthy

yes,yes,yes and definetly

rocco is so much better than all 3 of them when he is healthy, gomes is hitting below. 200, aybar has been really slumping as of late and floyd looks close to finished so i would take a healthy rocco all day over these 3 guys

When was the last time Baldelli was truly healthy? A large part of his worth has always been tied up in his speed and position (CF). Will he ever have either of those back? Is he still a Crawfordesque hack at the plate? A hack who can barely play the field and barely played baseball at all in over a year.. you’re going to just give someone away on that kind of risk in hopes of an upgrade? Sounds more like wishful thinking and gimmickry. However, I fully trust the front office will make a well-reasoned decision on this matter and their track record strongly suggests they will not give away any useful parts unless absolutely necessary.

by RATW on Aug 2, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well it seems now that gomes has an option left so i would option him and activate rocco

well in those couple of years when rocco was battleing those injuries we all know why now because of the mitochondrial disease that he has, he thinks that he has his timing back at the plate right now, so maybe he will be close to the player he was when he was healthy

In the paper today

Upton said it hit nothing. Leyland argued it did but accepted the umpires’ decision that as they could not be certain they would not overturn the initial decision.

I can’t find it, but I am sure I read somewhere that Upton lost the ball in the roof. He did hustle back to play the carom although Cabrera still made it to third. I had no idea where it was. Looking at both Upton and Crawford, they both seemed to have lost it. I certainly did. At first I thought it was simply a very high but otherwise routine popup and then figured it must be gone until I saw it bounce off the wall. Then I wasn’t sure whether Leyland was arguing that it went over the wall and bounced back (which I was pretty sure it didn’t) or whether it hit the catwalk.

Actually anyone that bashes Upton for that deserves a smack in the face

I’m the first to call someone out for not playing hard, but you can’t fault a guy for losing a ball in the dome.

That's what I was thinking

at a game recently, “How the heck do they avoid losing the ball?”

If possible they should color the inside of that sucker.

According to RaysIndex.com

Gomes has an option remaining. This seems surprising to me given his performance so far this year, but supposedly he only played 16 games in 2007 and 20 is the minimum to count as an optional assignment.

by K-Rock on Aug 2, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

03: Sept only
04: 1 option
05: 1 option
06: none used
07: didn’t stay 20 days

So apparently he does have one left.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 2, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i hope they dont use it right now, i think that they should activate him and see how he does

if he doesnt perform in his return then option him and call him back up in september

Gomes has long been out of options

If they say he has an option left, they’re wrong.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Hopefully Soon!

I can’t wait to see Rocco back; he’s been smoking the ball (and yeah definitely check out his pic on milb.com!). I like Gomes even if he is hitting .190 – he walks a fair amount and is always a threat to go deep. What does Maddon see in Aybar though? He DH’d him tonight! Guy can’t hit and really is nothing special defensively.

by cosmic charlie on Aug 3, 2008 12:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

because he really doesnt have any other choice than to DH aybar

once rocco and ruggs come up he will have better options than gomes and aybar

Perhaps he notices that

as a 23 year old in 2006 he got 243 ABs and hit 18 doubles ending with a line of .280/.364/.403 that included 28 BBs and just 36 Ks. That was after a brief introduction to the majors as a 22 year old when in 86 ABs he had 8 doubles and a .326/.448/.453 line. He may consider that evidence that Aybar is a useful hitter as more convincing than the 155 ABs he has had so far this year, and may even like that in those ABs he has managed 15 BBs and just 18 Ks as well as 9 doubles.

My guess is he also likes Aybar’s ability to play 3 infield positions without hurting the team.

I think it fair to say Aybar is not hitting well this year, but not correct to say he cannot hit. In fact, he started the year hitting pretty well. Before getting hurt, in admittedly just 7 games, his line was .292/.370/.500 and as late as July 6 his OBP was at .351. He has slumped since then, but that is hardly a reason to dismiss his value to the team.

I think we also have to remain aware that, with rare exceptions (Stokes became one late last year and Hammel earlier this year although his last few performances may bring him back into Maddon’s good graces) everyone gets playing time on Maddon’s team. It is one of his hallmarks, and I think his strengths as a manager.

by bobr on Aug 3, 2008 6:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's true...

Although he got very lucky in 2006 (.329 BABIP), I’ll agree that he has value. His value is in his “ability to play 3 infield positions without hurting the team.” Even in the minors, his offensive numbers were pretty average with a fair amount of walks and not too many K’s. But still, he’s basically a utility guy, and I understand that Maddon wants to keep everyone fresh. I just think he’s a little too hesitant to use Floyd against LHP. He’s only faced them 6 times all year, despite a career line of .272/.331/.464 vs lefties. So I don’t buy the idea that he has no choice other than Aybar, is all I was trying to say.
