Al's a Met

The New York Post reports that the Mets have signed Al Reyes, who was let go by the Rays earlier this week.

Reyes is injury prone and comes with some off-field baggage, but remains a solid reliever capable of helping the Mets’ mess of a bullpen. He has a 4.37 ERA and 19/10 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings this season and could work his way into a late-inning role pretty quickly.

Seriously....

Who gives a 4th outfielder a 5 yr $50 million contract? I know it isnt very relevant, but sweet Jesus what an awful move. I guess making the best catch in the history of the sport can pay outrageous dividends

Toronto is extremely underrated

And Ricciardi is a very underrated GM

JP is also

not well liked in T-Dot for dropping fan fav (Johnson) at end of spring training for Stewart. One good thing he did do was hire Cito back

by Underdogs on Aug 20, 2008 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt Frank Thomas or Adam Dunn are fans either.

Not sure what he saw in John Gibbons.

What do they have on the farm? That lineup is getting up in age. You wouldn’t think it would take much to fill the holes, but then again, people have been saying that regarding Toronto for a few years now it seems.

by RATW on Aug 20, 2008 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the Dunn thing was lame, but Thomas was pure business

what major holes do the Jays have to fill? you can sort of count left field, as Stewart was a poor choice — but Lind is there now. and shortstop is definitely a weak link. expectations were much higher Rios and Aaron Hill.

that said, this team has 85-90 win talent. it’s not like Ricciardi inherited a team with 95-win talent and has screwed up.

(i know nothing about most farm systems, so i can’t comment on that.)

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 20, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shortstop, DH, catcher, maybe 2b but Hill should work fine .. nothing insurmountable as the pitching is solid, but that seems to be the story since at least 2005 with the Jays.

Every year they are the “breakout” pick but they can’t seem to get over the hill for whatever reason.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the offense on the wrong side of average and on the wrong side of peak when it comes to Rolen and Overbay and from what I’ve read the farm is lacking.

There’s a lot to like and you have to think Wells and Rios will turn it around, or at least they better with both having no-trade clauses and approximately $175M combined in obligations until 2014.

by RATW on Aug 20, 2008 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i don't disagree

i guess it just doesn’t seem fair to criticize a team for not getting over the hill, when they’re definitely right there. i mean, 50% of organizations can’t even find the hill. i’ll take a solidly above-average GM any time. i don’t love JP, but he’s not a bad GM. that’s the extent of my point.

if he leaves the Jays, chances are they’ll get a worse replacement, which is good for the Rays.

the Johnson/Stewart decision is a head-scratcher for sure

There’s also the BJ Ryan $55MM signnig that, while perhaps not a bad contract if Ryan stayed healthy, is exactly the type of thing that Ricciardi didn’t need to do — he’s great at identifying underrated pitching. The Vernon Wells deal also looks bad, although isn’t he dealing with some serious injury hangover?

by Sandy Kazmir on Aug 20, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

eh

JP didn’t give up on hillenbrand, he just realized he was overrated. when he was traded to the giants he was hitting .301/.342/.480

Tough to know why he traded Gross, but Overbay did come in the return package (underrated first baseman with a good glove.)

Not sure why Boston simply purchased Hinske from the Blue Jays, but JP didn’t give up on him since he was a Jay for 4.5 years (and I believe JP was the one to acquire him just after taking the Toronto GM gig)

Thomas was a cost-saving move because of his 2009 automatic option. And well, we don’t yet know if he gave up on him too early, but he has been hurt and hitting not so well with Oakland.

He just turned 24

A majority of 24 year old are in AA/AAA; Upton has hundreds of major league games. When Anderson was 23, he hit .321/.352/.505 for the Angels and finished runner up in the ROY voting. Upton has 1247 major league at bats and his season last year, at a year younger, was better than what Anderson did as a 23 year old.

JP Peterson must be holding his mic up to his pants because he’s talking out of his ass, again.

Zumaya hit 105

In the ‘06 playoffs, although people question whether the gun was off. It’s pretty commonly accepted that a human can’t get it to go higher than 103. Jason Neighborgall was clocked at 104 in college.

Steve Dalkowski could supposedly hit close to 110, but it was before radar guns existed, and he was too wild to use the speed tester available at the time.
