Al's a Met
The New York Post reports that the Mets have signed Al Reyes, who was let go by the Rays earlier this week.
Reyes is injury prone and comes with some off-field baggage, but remains a solid reliever capable of helping the Mets’ mess of a bullpen. He has a 4.37 ERA and 19/10 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings this season and could work his way into a late-inning role pretty quickly.
Seriously....
Who gives a 4th outfielder a 5 yr $50 million contract? I know it isnt very relevant, but sweet Jesus what an awful move. I guess making the best catch in the history of the sport can pay outrageous dividends
doesn't really matter as far as Rays concerned
highly doubt WC comes from ALC
If Toronto would just sign Barry
I would like there chances as well

Toronto is extremely underrated
And Ricciardi is a very underrated GM
my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance
JP is also
not well liked in T-Dot for dropping fan fav (Johnson) at end of spring training for Stewart. One good thing he did do was hire Cito back
I doubt Frank Thomas or Adam Dunn are fans either.
Not sure what he saw in John Gibbons.
What do they have on the farm? That lineup is getting up in age. You wouldn’t think it would take much to fill the holes, but then again, people have been saying that regarding Toronto for a few years now it seems.
the Dunn thing was lame, but Thomas was pure business
what major holes do the Jays have to fill? you can sort of count left field, as Stewart was a poor choice — but Lind is there now. and shortstop is definitely a weak link. expectations were much higher Rios and Aaron Hill.
that said, this team has 85-90 win talent. it’s not like Ricciardi inherited a team with 95-win talent and has screwed up.
(i know nothing about most farm systems, so i can’t comment on that.)
my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance
Shortstop, DH, catcher, maybe 2b but Hill should work fine .. nothing insurmountable as the pitching is solid, but that seems to be the story since at least 2005 with the Jays.
Every year they are the “breakout” pick but they can’t seem to get over the hill for whatever reason.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the offense on the wrong side of average and on the wrong side of peak when it comes to Rolen and Overbay and from what I’ve read the farm is lacking.
There’s a lot to like and you have to think Wells and Rios will turn it around, or at least they better with both having no-trade clauses and approximately $175M combined in obligations until 2014.
i don't disagree
i guess it just doesn’t seem fair to criticize a team for not getting over the hill, when they’re definitely right there. i mean, 50% of organizations can’t even find the hill. i’ll take a solidly above-average GM any time. i don’t love JP, but he’s not a bad GM. that’s the extent of my point.
if he leaves the Jays, chances are they’ll get a worse replacement, which is good for the Rays.
my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance
i respect nitpickers
my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance
the Johnson/Stewart decision is a head-scratcher for sure
There’s also the BJ Ryan $55MM signnig that, while perhaps not a bad contract if Ryan stayed healthy, is exactly the type of thing that Ricciardi didn’t need to do — he’s great at identifying underrated pitching. The Vernon Wells deal also looks bad, although isn’t he dealing with some serious injury hangover?
my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance
Yeah...JP's problem is he gives up on hitters too early when they are slumping

eh
JP didn’t give up on hillenbrand, he just realized he was overrated. when he was traded to the giants he was hitting .301/.342/.480
Tough to know why he traded Gross, but Overbay did come in the return package (underrated first baseman with a good glove.)
Not sure why Boston simply purchased Hinske from the Blue Jays, but JP didn’t give up on him since he was a Jay for 4.5 years (and I believe JP was the one to acquire him just after taking the Toronto GM gig)
Thomas was a cost-saving move because of his 2009 automatic option. And well, we don’t yet know if he gave up on him too early, but he has been hurt and hitting not so well with Oakland.

Whenever anyone posts "OH HAI GUYZ"
usually whatever follows is something that’s already been repeated more than once before it.
The Mets bullpen is in shambles
Unlike Stokes, Reyes might actually be of some help if he performs more like his first half of last year instead of the way he’s played since.
Do you think Al Reyes is going to catch on with another team. I've been wondering. Anyone heard anything?

did anyone listen to the ron and ian show today?
some season ticket holder called in and said that he got his postseason package and upper deck seats are $1400 EACH?!?! Can anyone else confirm this?
"I like to astral travel"
i meant $1400 for all 11 possible postseason games..
if less games are played then the difference gets transferred to next years season ticket cost..
Please tell me that this is still wrong

He just turned 24
A majority of 24 year old are in AA/AAA; Upton has hundreds of major league games. When Anderson was 23, he hit .321/.352/.505 for the Angels and finished runner up in the ROY voting. Upton has 1247 major league at bats and his season last year, at a year younger, was better than what Anderson did as a 23 year old.
JP Peterson must be holding his mic up to his pants because he’s talking out of his ass, again.

Is Garza being too predictable?
Looks like he was mowing in the first 2 innings then lost it all of a sudden.
He is stil young, and that last inning shows.

Kaz or Garza
Shields is very good, but doesn’t have the stuff to get much better.

Anyone that says Kaz, hasn't paid attention.
by putupyourDUKES on Aug 20, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Kaz can't put together an entire season where he lasts more then 6 innings every game
Just not his style of play.
by putupyourDUKES on Aug 20, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Right now he cant last...I agree
He still puts up great K numbers and ERA numbers which the media likes. Guys like Randy Johnson struggled early in their career.
My money would be on Shields, but Kaz or Garza will get more press
because they have the ability to be more dominant, albeit less consistent

Halladay's dominant
well, unless you define dominant as K/9, then he’s merely very good.
my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance
I agree
Halladay also throws a ton of innings much like Shields.

Very true.
I haven’t looked at the pitches thrown numbers lately, but Halladay usually had lower pitch totals than guys with a half dozen less innings if not more.

that this is the second straight start for garza that riggins has caught? maybe garza and navvy just don’t mesh well….

And it isn’t that Garza and Navi don’t mesh well as much as Garza and Riggins mesh exceptionally well.

Zumaya hit 105
In the ‘06 playoffs, although people question whether the gun was off. It’s pretty commonly accepted that a human can’t get it to go higher than 103. Jason Neighborgall was clocked at 104 in college.
Steve Dalkowski could supposedly hit close to 110, but it was before radar guns existed, and he was too wild to use the speed tester available at the time.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
One criticism about Maddon:
If Maddon were coaching the Angels, he’d be pulling Weaver right now instead of giving him a chance to finish his inning.
oesnt stop hitting infield hits and getting blown calls
They havent hit a ball well in a few innings
No he didn't
Any competent 3B would have had that. The only reason Aybar didn’t get it is because his first step is ridiculously slow.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Whether or not the throw would have gotten there in time is another question though.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
come on Bradford
at the moment, we are down only 1 and the Sox are getting their asses kicked. This could turn out well if Bradford doesn’t serve it up to Anderson.
Bring up Houser
I swear he could do as well as Miller, and he can throw 86 as well as Miller, and he’s cheaper than Miller.

Wrong guy to say that to...
It took an easy hop, and he didnt need to go to the ground. Should have backhanded it and flipped it to 2nd. Official scorer gave it an error…he made the play tougher then it was. Good 2nd baseman makes that almost every time.
They changed it to a hit...
Probably was…still should have made the play
i was gonna say
this is a perfect example of how defense can make a HUGE difference in the game of baseball
Only down by 1, they can do this
Hitting the Rays is like hitting a piece of Iron. They’re like a machine.
he got nervous and played it safe.. didnt want to risk diving..
