Kazmir to the Rangers?
Some more speculation that there might be a slight possibility that the Rays would consider trading Kazmir in the offseason to the Rangers for a boatload of prospects. Most of you follow the minor leagues much more than I do and would be better equipped to respond to the proposed prospects this writer lists. With our stable of young minor league pitchers looking to advance to the Show and with Kaz being consistently inconsistent recently, would there be a chance that Andrew and the gang would explore the idea of doing something like this?

for the right price, I'm all for it
two reasons — we have plenty of rotation depth and it would save money. both positives would make the team better.
i also don’t know how good the suggested Texas prospects are, but receiving two high-level blue chippers back would probably be worth it, especially a middle infielder and corner outfielder.

I would like to see McGee come back from TJ first
He if he comes back and starts to pitch well, I say fire away.

eh, Price and Davis are fine
I’m not saying we won’t miss Kazmir’s performance, but we would definitely make up his value with the offensive gains. and we wouldn’t totally lose all of his value on the pitching side because of the plentiful minor league options.
having a rotation THIS deep does have its downsides — some pitchers wasted in the minors and some starters wasted in the bullpen (JP Howell right now, probably Niemann and others down the road.) additionally, Friedman has his hands tied towards adding underrated MLB pitching talent, because there’s no place to put them. just like it’s ok to have a corner outfield spot or DH not filled because you can always fill them with whatever falls into your lap, it’s nice not to have the whole rotation and bullpen filled for the same reason.

Please trade him
Why would you trade a young successful lefty who has a reasonable contract through 2012? Look at the Yanks and Red Sox; young pitching in the minors does not always translate to success.
Stockpile pitching = a stockpile of pennants.

how about jackson and hammel for david murphy?
what is marlon byrd’s contract situation? i believe he is a FA, the rays should go after him in FA this offseason, he wont cost too much and he has been amazing for texas since he got called up

Elvis Andrus would be a nice start to a Kaz package.

If we trade Kaz
We should really be going for MLB ready hitters, and impact hitters. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Chris Davis, or maybe David Murphy would have to be include.
Also, that package Newberg proposed wasn’t very good. Andrus is a nice start (would give us the top 3 SS prospects in baseball though, not sure how much that helps). Kiker is a lefty, he would probably rank between Davis/Hellickson and Niemann/Talbot/Rollins. Laughter is a middle reliever. The other two are good prospects, but I would hope we would go for quality rather than quantity for Kazmir.

I say don't do it!
1. Kaz is a premium lefty and no matter how much depth you have, you can never have too many top flight lefties!
2. I know he loves Texas, but he HAS to be wise enough to know he’d get murdered pitching half his games in Arlington.
3. Familiarity breeds success. People know Scott. They see him as a face of the franchise – NO reason to let the wishy washy fans to think you’re dumping talent out of fear of payroll. If you want to keep fans, don’t cut the ties they know and love.
4. Yes, you can get talent in return, but you can get more from other franchises IF you are set on dealing him… the Rangers? meh…
If you're not having fun, what are you having? There's already WAAAY too many serious moments in life.

Keep him
With people finally going to games there has to be money to sign him (and with the new stadium coming). Not to mention that would be an awful injustice to him to trade him now that the Ray’s are finally in contention.

Until recently
the Rays were in a position to stock the farm by dealing what major league talent they had for prospects. The object was to build enough depth to prepare to contend.
But we are at a different stage now. We are legitimate contenders, and while it is important to maintain prospect depth, we now might deal some prospects for major leaguers, but not our stars for minor leaguers or unproven major leaguers.
Kazmir has been a mildly frustrating pitcher, but he has done enough already in the majors to be considered an established top of the rotation starter. There is a good chance he becomes a perennial Cy Young candidate, and on top of that, even when not at his best, he is one of the most exciting pitchers in the game.
I don’t think the Rays deal him for prospects, no matter how promising, and in the Rangers’ case, they are excellent prospects but far from universally considered can’t miss. The highest ranking prospect in the Rangers’ system at the start of the year in Baseball America was Andrus at #19, and nobody else was in the top 40.
In my view, it is a bad idea to deal Kazmir, and I doubt the Rays would consider it.

Elvis Andrus is a good prospect but he does nothing for us
I dont think this trade has more than a 2% chance of happening but just for fun lets just say we wait a year so they can make Smoak the center peice.

I want to keep Kazmir
And I can not, in a million years, see Andrew Friedman dealing him, I couldn’t see it BEFORE the contract extension.
If a deal had to be done I would take a package of….
Jarrod Saltamacchia OR Max Ramirez( they can play the one they keep at C or use Teagarden anyway)
Chris Davis ( Salta/Ramirez can play 1B, Teagarden plays C until Justin Smoak is ready)
Elvis Andrus OR Engel Beltre( Andrus is a awesome prospect but I like Brignac and we have Beckham in the system, Beltre is an incredible talent that I doubt will be traded)
I mean if we actually entertained this and got that deal, our team next year(Andrus is close already) could be)
C Navarro
1B Pena
2B Iwamura
SS Andrus
3B Longoria
LF Crawford
CF Upton
RF Davis(yes he knows LF and RF in addition to 1B)
DH Saltamacchia
SP James Shields
SP Matt Garza
SP David Price
SP Wade Davis
SP Sonny/EJax….keeping it warm for Hellickson.
LIke I said, I DO NOT want Kazmir trade and I CAN NOT see Friedman even listening to offers but if we got that deal, I would be down.
by joeybw on Aug 23, 2008 1:00 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Justin Smoak
fits this team better. Switch hitting 1B with power from both sides, walks more than he k’s. Kaz is not going anywhere but if he were to go to Texas, I want Smoak.
Hell, lets get crazy and do a monster deal with Smoak & Kinsler. Not sure what we’d have to add to that though.
by PriceMultiCyYoungs on Aug 23, 2008 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well Smoak can't be traded for about a year from now
They can also give us Crack Boy :)
I definatley prefer something like Andrus, Saltamacchia and Davis anyway unless Harrison is going to have a bright future, I am not crazy about him.
Also next season if we did that, we would have Andrus at SS and Brignac learning 2B with Beckham about 3 years away.
This all just a waste of text because Kazmir isn’t going anywhere and I would cry if he did……unless we got a serious haul, which I doubt because if they are gonna trade Andrus, a C AND Davis, it will be for Roy Halladay, even though hes older, he is an ace of aces, goes complete all the time and word is they wanna add him and Sabathia. I don’t think Kazmir would even accept being the #3 and I don’t think even the Rangers loaded farm has enough for Halladay AND Kazmir.

I think the pendulum has swung too far
regarding prospects. Suddenly they become the target all the time, and I think that is foolish. A team that is in contention to a large extent because it has a top-notch rotation should not deal the ace of that rotation for prospects.
I know many think Shields or Garza have passed Kazmir, but I don’t think so. They simply are doing better than him right now. And no matter how pleased we are to have Price and Davis and Hellickson available, none of them has done anything in the majors. They cannot replace Kazmir! Or rather, the Rays cannot risk the core of their success on such uncertainties.
If this were the 2006 Rays it might be something to consider. If after 2009 Price has demonstrated that he is an ace, Davis has had major league success and the rest of the rotation has proven to be solid, it might be something to consider. If after 2009, that is all true and we have a hole somewhere that we cannot fix otherwise, it might be worthwhile considering. But not now.

Can Andrus play 2B?
I think we found out at the deadline that AF and company believe Brignac is the SS of the future.
also unless Tex wants to go Hammy for Kaz, I don’t see how a deal gets done.

Just because we weren't willing to make a desperation move
doesn’t mean that Brignac is a player of the future on this team. It just means we aren’t willing to be raped by a savvy GM. Nobody likes being raped.

You only trade an all-star for an all-star
say no to prospects! If this were a couple years ago, I understand the yearning to build for the future. The future is here now! If you consider trading Kazmir because of depth, then you start looking at someone like Ian Kinsler or Michael Young or Josh Hamilton. Or, Matt Kemp and Jonathon Broxton from the Dodgers. The Cardinals have a surplus of outfielders…Rick Ankiel and Colby Rasmus. Kazmir is a rare lefty with 2 all star appearances already at a young age. Yes he is frustrating, but if you consider trading him, you get impact bats that are already making an impact at a major league level. Don’t wait to wonder what they can be.

A Rangers' fans 2 cents
Personally, I like Kazmir and I would love to see the Rangers trade for him, but honestly, I think the asking price is going to be too high for us to get a deal done. If the Rangers do try and acquire a front of the rotation pitcher, I think it’d be more likely through free agency, maybe a Sheets or Sabathia type (now whether they would actually want to pitch here is a whole different story), or in a trade with someone like KC, for Grienke, who though not as good as Kazmir, would probably cost less…..
