Nah, I agree.
It really should have never gotten to the 10th, but that’s what happens in baseball.
There’s still no place for the dumb shit that went down today.

Meh
They are okay… by the way the White Sox lead the AL in homeruns and have 2 of the top five home run hitters currently… is the division weak? Somewhat, but “weak hitting” isn’t how I’d describe it

Eddings was the ump on the not-dropped 3rd strike call play with Josh Paul too.

very touch loss
As Todd Kalas said, this was the worst call in the 11 year history of the Rays. What is the ump looking at? how can a call like that decide the game? but you know, this would not have happened if Upton throws the ball back immediately after he caught it for the 1st out of the inning and the catcher on first. he tags at first and goes to second and Upton has the play right in front of him and he takes at least 2 seconds to throw to second. he should be sent to the minors for all I care. Of course none of this happens if Riggans catches the ball in the bottom of the nine. Which brings up the point, why is Navarro sitting so much? Overall it was a good series and we took 2 out of 3.
by setfree on Aug 24, 2008 5:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
terrible umping eh?
crew chief, post-game:
“As a runner, you’re allowed to do that. What Doug ruled at second base was, even though A.J. did kind of stick his arm out to make contact, Aybar was still in his way, so A.J., if he would have turned, he wouldn’t have been able to continue on to third. So after making the throw, Aybar is no longer in the act of fielding and he can’t obstruct the runner, which is what Doug ruled happened. And in a rundown, even though A.J. was going back to second, the rule of obstruction during a rundown is he gets his next advanced base and that’s why he was rewarded third base.”
“If Aybar’s got the ball, there’s no obstruction, You protect the fielder when he’s in the act of fielding. Once that ball’s released and out of his hand, he has to vacate.”

Sure we should have put it away at the plate in the 9th
But that doesn’t mean that the umpire had to give Pier-douche bag a free pass to third base. MLB Umpires apparently hate the Rays. That idiot catcher on the White Sox made more of a move toward Aybar than Upton did towards second base. He cheated, and the umpires let him get away with it. If he wasn’t so clumsy and not fallen on his ass he would have ended up 4 feet out of the baseline.

If BJ's ball stays in play it's over
by sternfan1 on Aug 24, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To be fair
He didn’t really cheat. There’s no rule against throwing your arm out and trying to induce a bad call from an ump. In fact, it’s unbelievable that the ump actually made that bad of a call, but, we didn’t see it from his vantage point. Players/teams do seemingly unethical things all the time, such as taking out a basemen to break up a play. The key is that they are trying to get the ump to rule in their favor, as A.J. did. You have to give A.J. credit — he’s just a lot smarter and creative than a lot of other players. Also, it’s not as if the Rays have a monopoly on playing honest baseball. I recall you guys stealing signs earlier in this series. Again, unethical, but it’s a part of the game. The Sox weren’t adequately protecting their signs, and you guys capitalized on that. On a similar note, Aybar wasn’t adequately protecting himself during that play, and he got burned. Players typically make a beeline away from a runner after getting rid of the ball in a rundown. He wasn’t. He was staying very close to where A.J. was, and perhaps A.J. saw that. Then he took advantage of it. Similar to the Rays taking advantage and stealing signs.
Just a thought. You guys have a great team down there, and behind the ChiSox, I’m somewhat rooting for you. It’s nice to see the underdogs do well.

Yes
There were accusations, and it was pretty clear to most, I believe it took place. The back-to-back pitchouts with absolute perfect timing was too much of a coincedence.

Obviously.
Because nobody’s ever been picked off before.
…and no team would ever, EVER think about pitching out twice. Ever. Couldn’t happen. Wouldn’t happen. We we’re obviously cheating.

Teams do it all the time.
But it’s rare that you see it executed perfectly, two times in a row, within seconds of each other.

by Vin on Aug 24, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is nothing wrong with stealing signs...
That’s why the 3rd base coach goes through a progression of phony signs, because it is completely acceptable to pick a teams signs.

Actually it's called interference
Reference: A-Rod in the 2004 ALCS.
I'm laughing at the superior intellect.
by Orlando Rays on Aug 24, 2008 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The text on that is
“(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules. In the event the batter runner has not reached first base, all runners shall return to the base last occupied at the time of the pitch.”
Aybar was no longer in possession of the ball, and therefore, he was no longer attempting to make the play.
by convergejd on Aug 24, 2008 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Its sad that
Maddon is the pretty much the only person who could get in trouble for this. Eddings won’t be fined/fired. That bleach-blonde shitstain won’t get fined. Just Maddon, if he speaks out about it.
It’s really pretty stupid.
by Vin on Aug 24, 2008 5:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That isn't entirely true
Any type of disciplinary action against Eddings won’t be publicized but I imagine something will happen.
The call was terrible, yes, but do we really think an umpire doesn’t care when they make a bad, game deciding call? Like anyone else who takes work seriously, I’m sure Eddings cares when he blows a call. I’m not so sure the guy should be fired for one bad call. Everyone makes a bonehead decision every once in a while.

That whole thing is disturbing to me.
Anyhow, I stand somewhat corrected. One article I found noted that umps generally aren’t reprimanded for judgment calls but then went on to say that umpire discipline exists but is not publicly released. Link: http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/content/printer_friendly/la/y2006/m07/d19/c1565708.jsp
I still believe I read something that umpires are sent a letter of reprimand if they make a call that seems to be an egregious error though I doubt this will fall into that category.
I still believe the call was poor because he was not in a good position to see who caused the obstruction and should have held off on the call until consulting with other umpires.
by tallyray on Aug 24, 2008 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ultimately irrelvant
What happended before the call means nothing. Riggans spazzing out, the ground rule double instead of the rbi double, hammel getting ripped, upton lollygagging again, whatever. The point is that it was a railroad job to the nth degree. For “Sox Fan” to come in here and say “tough loss, how do you think we feel?” is moronic. How do we think you feel? I don’t know, we couldn’t say. As Rays fans, one day maybe we will experience what it’s like to have a game handed to us by terrible umpiring. We’ll have to get back to you on that once we’re done removing the blunt objects out of our ass.

And another thing
The only thing you can do is use this as motivation. It’s hard to feel like an underdog with one of the top records in baseball. With our history, it’s a little easier, but still, the more they can play up the “it’s us against the world and they’re all out to hose us” thing, the better. That’s a powerful motivator. I remember the National Championship game between Florida and Ohio State, and even though I thought we (Florida) was actually the better team all along, that whole “Florida doesn’t belong” crap got us so fired up, and I can only imagine what it did for the players. I was ready to run throguh a wall before kickoff of that game. The Rays can use stuff like this. It still pisses me off though.

Umpire crew chief Ted Barrett defended the decision:

So it’s ok to clothesline any fielder in the baseline as long as he doesn’t have the ball apparently.

All I read is from Barrett
“blah blah blah I’m a stupid asshole”
Umps are never going to throw another ump under the bus. What else was Aybar supposed to do on that play? He ran out to the left and AssJole Pussynksi clearly dove into him – even Barrett admitted it. Baserunners cannot make an offensive move on a fielder on such a play and should have been called for obstruction immediately.

Demoralizing loss today, ladies.
It won’t be more than a fortnight before the dreaded Boston Red Stockings pass us in the standings. By this time next month I suspect we will be in third place.

Don’t think you can hold of the Yankees? Well, at least one Chicago team should make the playoffs, you can just switch the gear in your closet and you’ll be good.

As a pleasant aside, here is a Special Olympics observation:
At a former job we had TVs on all day, and one channel had ESPN2 (The Deuce). One day they were showing the Special Olympics, Golf specifically. There are many ways that this could wind up being funny, but ESPN2 (The Deuce) took the extraordinary step of showing the score cards (self-scored by the players).
Funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

I love the crew chief again justifying the call….
IF A.J would have turned, he wouldnt have been able to.
Well he DIDNT turn, he threw an elbow and then tripped over himself.
These guys hide behind the fact that MLB “protects” them. It’s like a child who knows that he wont be disciplined, he does whatever the hell he wants.
Bottom line is this….
These guys think they are hurting the Rays, but we control our destiny, not them. We still sit 4.5 games up with 6 more head to head. This team hasnt lost a game in 2 weeks that wasnt influenced by corrupt officials, and we are STILL bashing the AL’s brains in.
If that kind of play had happened against the Sox, Guillen would have assaulted someone lol.

I feel sorry for 815Sox and the rest of the white sox.
The White Sox announcers are the most annoying people I have ever heard announce a game. I’m an extremely objective person, who enjoys logic and reason, and actually finds most of sports mania pretty biased, but those guys take the cake. Hawk was just dumb, and the other guy was so arrogant it made me want to win just to shove it in his face. Sorry you have to live with those guys. Looks like both Sox teams are just as arrogant as the other.

Here's what Roto has to say
Alexei Ramirez drove in A.J. Pierzynski with a single in a controversial 10th inning Sunday as the White Sox outlasted the Rays 6-5.
The White Sox were down 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth before Paul Konerko picked up his 45th RBI and tied the game with a single that scored pinch-runner Brian Anderson. In the 10th, things got even crazier. A.J. Pierzynski led off with a single, then advanced to second when B.J. Upton lazily flipped the relay throw in. Pierzynski got caught in a rundown on the next play, a grounder to short, but was ruled safe at third on a call of interference after he was “pushed” to the ground by Willy Aybar. Replays showed Pierzynski initiated the contact. Nonetheless, Ramirez singled one batter later and A.J. crossed the plate as the winning run one

RE: 815sox
People like that never learn and you’re feeding him by replying to him. Ignoring is a good thing.
Also, pitch F/X says the big call the umpire missed was the 1-2 pitch to Konerko in the 9th. Pitch F/X showed it right down the middle. Pitch F/X has a margin of error of 2.2 inches. All the people sitting around me at Safeco were wondering why I suddenly got so pissed…but that was the truly heinous call of the game. If Pitch F/X can call balls and strikes down to a 2.2 inch margin of error, I think it’s time to do away with home plate umpires doing anything but calling out or safe. It may be part of the game, but it’s a stupid part of the game and if you can guarantee you’ll get the call right, you do it.
Human error needs to stop being “part of the game” on the umpiring side and with the technology to rid ourselves of such errors, there’s no reason not to.

I don't want umpiring to be computerized
I like the human element. I despise instant replay in the NFL and NCAA, as it always holds up the game and drags on incessantly.
On the other hand, officials in all sports need to be accountable to a higher authority other than their own union. Baseball and the NFL are horribly officiated sports and everyone knows it. Humans can do the job. We just need the right humans doing the job.

Would you rather waste a few minutes and get the call right, or have blown calls change the outcome of a game?

Here's a question
on BJs GR double, can the ump award Aki home plate, based on whether or not it was obvious he would score?

I don't believe so.
The only time (to my knowledge) that can happen is when a fan or the park (see: Wrigley’s ivy) interfere with the ball.

XM Home Plate Take
Chris Powell on XM was on right after the conclusion of the game. In his words, “The Rays were jobbed by the umpiring crew.” He called the umpires a joke, and the call a disgrace.
Of course the homer White Sox radio crew justified the whole thing. Being a homer and a cheerleader is one thing, but you’d think you might act like a journalist once in a while.
by RayFanNY on Aug 24, 2008 11:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Minor point...
but broadcasters are not journalists. I love Hawk and DJ, but that is just because I’m a Sox fan. I could see where listening to such complete homers would be frustrating for opposing teams..but regardless it is important to note the difference between broadcasters and journalists.

Ironically
I actually enjoy the Sox broadcasters, both TV and radio, when the Rays are not involved. When rooting for the other team, that type of homer-ism can be beyond annoying. However when the Rays are not involved, I find it rather humorous.
There must be something about Chicago. Arguably even worse homer-ism is with the Cubs radio crew. Ron Santos literally cries into the microphone every time the Cubbies fall behind. And if someone hits a home run for them, he is literally cheering and screaming like a school girl. I’ve yet to hear a single bit of analysis out of that dork.

There is no worse
than Hawk Harrelson. He’s just horrible all the way around. That said, he’s an employee of the White Sox, and if they want someone who’s miserable at doing the play by play but good at cheerleading, then that’s their problem.
People are making way too much of the play on this thread. As annoying as it is that the umps got the call wrong, Pierzynski made a heads-up play, and has proven over and over again that he’s not beyond trying to fool the umpires to get a call to go his way. There’s a reason most people don’t like him. BJ should have thrown the ball in right away (although even the TBS crew said they didn’t think Upton could have gotten him even if he threw the ball in right away), and Aybar will always remember to step to the side during a rundown instead of diagonally. Still, there’s no grand conspiracy, and it wasn’t bad or even unethical baseball.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

BJ said the ball drifted on him and forced him to turn resulting in being unable to set his feet.
I’d like to see the play because I missed it; pending that, I can imagine that he probably wasn’t even set until AJ was halfway between 1st and 2nd, at which point there’s no reason to try to rush the throw in.
by kericr on Aug 25, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
For what it's worth..
not all Sox fans are jerks. I just wanted to stop by and say that this was the first time I’ve really gotten a chance to sit down and watch a few days worth of your team and I’m solidly impressed by your club. The AJ play not withstanding (and I’ll admit that it was a bad call…but one that I’ll gladly take given how tight the divisional race is) I think we’re seeing two good, evenly matched teams when the Sox and Rays play.
Good luck the rest of the way…I’d love nothing more than to see you guys make the playoffs and hold Boston and NY out.
