Star-divide

(Written by R.J., not STP...)

When I was in high school being a Rays fan was less about being cool and more about being rebellious. I should clarify; rebellious in the sense that it was unique, like a unibrow. One event that stands out in my mind comes when I was dating a girl named Katie. She wasn't the biggest of Rays fans, but more than most because she didn't like baseball one bit. We were an odd couple, to say the least, but she understood that I had needs she simply could not satisfy.

We dated for about a month before that faithful night. It was the weekend before homecoming and a friend of mine was holding a party. Katie and I agreed to meet up there because I wanted to see the end of the Rays and Yankees game before arriving. The game lasted longer than I had anticipated and when I arrived Katie was nowhere to be found, at least until I went upstairs where she was cornered by a guy.

His hands all over her, much to her dismay, as she attempted to wiggle away from him while telling him to leave her alone. I rushed over and pulled him off. He immediately looked down at my shirt which featured the Rays insignia (these were the days of green) and decided to comment "She has low standards if she's willing to date a Rays fan."

I could not believe this guy was brave as to insult something I cherished that much right in front of me. I figured he would not be so daring as to say it twice. I asked him what it was he said. He repeated. I flew off the handle and grabbed him by his popped collar, throwing him against a wall.

"If you ever and I do mean ever say something like that again I will put you through this wall. The Rays will be good before you know it."

At this point he had a bewildered look on his face. "What about her?" he asked.
"Same for her, she knows her place."

By now most of the party had gathered around to see a fight or something, but much to their disappointment nothing happened publicly. Although the night did end in heartache for me as the Rays lost.

And Katie dumped me.

Not as obvious as if it said Patrick L. Kennedy

for multiple reasons.
1. He isn’t funny
2. He doesn’t have a girlfriend or likes girls.

I found this to be telling

From a Wake grad that works for the Durham Bulls and posts on the Wake Forest Message Board that may be the only place on the internet more than here, when some jackass that supposedly played ball against BJ in HS he responded w/ this (longest sentence ever):

BJ doesn’t have a bad attitude. I didn’t play on any team with him when he was 8 or whatever, but I did work with the guy for 3 years.

Very enjoyable to be around actually. Good person, good family, good work ethic. Would take ground balls at 9am.

Also, there is a report on the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Journal website that top draft pick SS Tim Beckham has been promoted from rookie-level Princeton (W. Va.) to short-season Class A Hudson Valley and will join the Renegades on Wednesday. Beckham hit .243 in 46 games with two homers and 14 RBIs.

Sequence of Events:

Everybody watches the game on TV, attendance is the typical 17k home crowd, nobody watches this.
ESPN sees low ratings for this show
ESPN broadcasts that this area doesn’t care about this team because nobody watched their special and nobody watched the game.

I won't draw this out with you

I won’t disagree that Walmart is worse than Target at how they treat their employees, but I don’t like it when people villianize walmart while heroically standing up for Target. Target is better. Barely.

You wanna buy stuff from a company that truely treats their employees well? then shop at CostCo.

I don't shop at any of them

I’m single, so it doesn’t make sense.

The thing about Wal-mart, though, is their hiring practices and the fact that they are telling their people that if they vote for Obama they will lose their jobs.

J.P. Peterson said something smart today.

Something like:
“BJ is way too young to give up on. He gets to balls most cf don’t get to. His average is low, but his OBP is high. Don’t boo him. Take the mistakes, but remember the upside. He’s only 23 and in his 1st year in CF”

by Brickhaus on Aug 26, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Teixera is better than Tejada

He also is entering his prime. He plays a position that is less susceptible to age poorly. In 5 years Tex will still be very productive.

Camden Yards is emptier than the Trop this year. They’re still in the middle of a rebuilding process. I’d put money down that the O’s don’t sign Tex.

Amazingly deep gameplay and stats management, also a mode called MLB Life were you make a character and play in the majors (like Road to the Show in MLB 08, except cute) and you get to be friends with players. Here’s my friends list:

*Glover
*Wheeler
*Howell
*Kazmir

Kazmir goes to the movies all the time with me.

How’s that $600 PC video card holding up for you? You still getting more than 10FPS?

Also, getting games 2 years after everyone else is SOOOOOO cutting edge.

And Vegas 2 is a damn good game if you haven’t played it.

As for Resistance…uh…it’s still PS3’s best game.

If say we had Hinske on the bench then it would be a good move

It is just the opposite of a late inning defensive replacement.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on the situation.

Upton is your best guy at getting on base, perhaps in a scenario where you need an extra base hit and not a walk, but even then.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 26, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

That is why I used the word hit. Aki was on 2nd and a walk wasn’t going to drive him in. Plus there were two strikes.

We needed a HIT in that situation. BJ is just not a good HITTER.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Not our best but close

But we needed a hit. Praying for the pitcher to walk BJ is just not the right move. Having BJ hit is essentially PRAYING for a walk. We might as well put a statue up there and have him not swing and hope for 4 balls. That is what BJ is right now. If MLB pitchers had real talent and were able to throw strikes consistently then BJ would be having an extremely disappointing year. We are just so lucky MLB pitches can’t locate.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

If we played against Edwin every game

I would propose getting 9 statue BJs to stand there all day and never swing. And of course when you do swing you are so late that you punch it foul with the power of a 3 year old.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Periodically he isn’t mega late he is just very late and he hits it down the opposite field line. That is much more about luck than skill when you are swinging like that.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a scenario where we needed Upton to drive Bartlett in

Preferably with a XBH. BJ just doesn’t really have the potential to do that right now. It is what it is. I’m sure he will one day turn it around and become a mega star, but right now he sucks with the stick.

Its the eyes I tell you

Can’t hurt to get his vision checked. Seriously you hear of players getting lasik all the time. Of course bloggers here think MLB players are superhuman. lol.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

RJ you must be living in a cave

There are players all the time that get lasik in the offseason. It happens all the time.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

I’m saying they should be checking their eyes all the freaking time. You are saying it is impossible for a MLB to have eye problems because MLB teams won’t allow them to. That is just an absurd argument.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

I’m saying if teams AREN’T checking their eyes then I seriously question the physical methods and records of teams. I would hope our organization would know about something like that all ready.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 26, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe they do, maybe they don't

My point is that you hear about players getting offseason lasik all the time in all sports. To think that either BJ Upton is immune or that the Rays are some out of this world organization for which it cannot happen to is just crazy talk. I’m sure the Rays check their players eyes just as much as every other organization does, which is probably say once or twice a year (wow like us normal human beings who also get eye problems). It happens RJ.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand your point.

I’m just saying I sincerely hope an organization, especially this one, would be more on top of something like that. I would expect the Giants for instance to not realize “Oh shit, this guy needs contacts.” Not ours.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 26, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope so also

It could also be the case he has contacts but the wrong prescription. Or perhaps he can’t wear them. So maybe they are aware but they can’t sit the guy down to do surgery now. Who knows.

Neither of us are eye doctors so it is pure speculation. I just point to players having eye issues and getting the surgery done in the offseason. I’ve also seen numerous quotes from hitters talking about how they couldn’t see until they got lasik.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Take a look at Denard Span

Obviously he isn’t in the same caliber as BJ so he isn’t getting the same attention. However, he sucked monkey ass in the minors until this last off season he realized he needed lasik. Bingo. Now he is a decent major leaguer.

by matthan on Aug 26, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He's had his moments on defense

but he’s misplayed plenty of balls, too. And he doesn’t lack bat speed at all. His problem is letting the ball get too deep in on him because his bat speed is THAT good. That, and he looks at more strike three calls than any player in history.

www.raysbb.com

Yes, we really do have fans.

by killa3312 on Aug 26, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

And he's made plenty of plays that almost no one else in the league gets to.

But killa is right. His bat speed is insane. It’s why he’s going to be an upper .900 OPS guy for most of his prime.

Thats actually one of the things in the game

Getting better items makes you better. For example, Jeffrey has a bench machine so that when he works out with Percival (who is a starter), he gets more breaking ball attributes, and his leather glove adds more top speed.
