DRaysBay Podcasting: The Why, The How, and the Ugly

Recently, there has been some questioning as to whether a DRaysBay Podcast or "BayCast" would be a good idea. Personally, I think that any medium from which you can inform new people is a great idea. Podcasts are a GREAT way of informing current users and drawing new users to any site.

Why: Well, (sorry RJ) Podcasts are like the Barry Bonds of information exchange through the internet and are essentially, RSS feeds + audio + steriods.

An audio Podcast would be an excellent solution for informing all DRB visitors where reading the forums and catching up on our memes may be a little too much to a new user.

For exhisting users, Podcasts would allow us to save and share DRB with outsiders. Also, STP doesn't know how to read.

How: Creating a Podcast can be done by ANYONE with a mic and a laptop. Using software such as Audacity and Skype allow Podcasts to be recorded and can even include VOIP (voice-over IP) phone call interviews. You could even use Windows Sound Recorder if everything else is too complicated.

The "difficult" part of making a Podcast is attatching it to an RSS for people to download. An RSS is essentially a text file and contains basic HTML code. When you have your Podcast MP3 uploaded onto your server, you can attach that to your RSS file and VIOLA! You've made a Podcast.

The specifics of attaching it are easy but precise. The best tutorial I've found to date is this one.

My questions would be

1) What would we discuss?
2) Why would anyone in their right mind care to listen to us talk?

Podcasts = Front page posts.

I would like to have them on my Zune while in my CAD class.

Yeah

Essentially, your front page posts would be Podcasts too. More work, sure. Better for everyone, definitely.

You have to let us be involved somehow

Set up a Skype and let us call in and ask you questions

Do it the ghetto way, just have you guys AIM the questions.

Too lazy for Skype.

Bring back the video mailbag

Although if that’s not happening, I’d like to be able to mail in or AIM questions for more informed dudes to answer in a podcast. Also I’m still waiting for that Aki interview, my questions about Japan need to be answered!

Podcasts are okay

I’m not sure if it would work for this site though. Podcasts are more entertaining whereas the vast majority of the analysis here is very informative. Of course I’m sure there is some way to do it. Also podcasts seem to be very qualitative whereas this site is obviously quantitative. I’m not sure how it will sound with RJ spouting off a bunch of acronyms and statistics.

My recommendation would be to do a once a week podcast that is much more based on simple commentary

Like a “State of the Rays” type deal. Very broad with easy numbers. It would just sound better.

I’m not sure how osmething like the Gabe Gross post would translate to a podcast.

It would probably hit a dinger in the 9th to win the game.

See thats what I think won't work

RJs posts just wouldn’t translate to radio/podcasts. No offense RJ. He would just be running off a bunch of numbers and things like tERA just doesn’t sound good. Say it out loud.
