boras claimed the contract signing took place after midnight and wants to renegotiate

Yeah...

PIttsburgh is saying MLB confirmed contract before midnight.

Boom. Outta Here.

by WillisDaddy on Aug 27, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's BS

Boras knows the monetary terms can’t change, he’s trying to leverage other terms, and probably failing at it. The new MLB rules about getting a pick in the next year’s draft really put a crimp in Boras’ negotiating style, and he’s trying to create his own new loophole so he can distinguish himself from other agents.

Ever see Swimming with Sharks

Working for that kind of control freak is never fun. You would get zero input, and he’d leave you out of all the important decisions, so you wouldn’t even get insight to his negotiating style. Getting a job for IMG would be much better.

by rglass44 on Aug 27, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They should just let him rot on the restricted list

MLB recognizes the contract but he doesn’t; he can’t turn to the player’s union for help, because that would be admitting he signed a valid contract. Let Boras stupidly try to take this to a real court of law, Alvarez isn’t going to want to foot the bill and will dump his ass faster than a concrete truck.

I died a little inside reading that yesterday.

Seriously, you stood up for your girlfriends honor by defending the Rays? You’re about as smooth as 20 grit.

by kericr on Aug 27, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The more suttle and straight-faced the sarcasm is, the harder it is for me to pick up.

Generally, if I think that someone could actually do something they’re claiming happened, I don’t pick it up as sarcasm. That’s not to say that I think you would do something like that, but being I don’t really know you, I can’t bring that into the equation. I could see someone doing what you said as not too far fetched. It’s a horribly misguided, hillarious, and sad concept, but it’s not beyond someone doing.

by kericr on Aug 27, 2008 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that part.

Rather the part where I say don’t talk trash about the Rays.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Speaking hyopthetically, here’s how I interpreted it:

You saw someone groping on your girlfriend – Logical
You stood up and defended her – Logical
In taking offense to what the guy said, you said something very very dumb – Illogical and hillarious
Getting dumped afterwards – Logical if what you said above in defending her is legit

Therefore, I fell for it. Now if you had said that she banged your brains out afterwards, I would have picked up the sarcasm.

...2 of those guys are switch hitters.

Zobrist has better numbers against righties.
Bartlett isn’t a platoon player.
Navi is hurt.
Floyd, Hinske, and Gross should never be in the line-up vs LHP.

What are you complaining about?

by Vin on Aug 27, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rocco: 1.081 OPS vs LHP (small sample size, but still)
Aybar: .793 OPS
Zobrist: .732 OPS
Riggans: .732 OPS
Ruggiano: .921 OPS (at Durham)
Bartlett: .821 OPS

I still don’t see the problem. None of that is horrible.

Agreed with lack of name..

I wonder why Bartlett isn’t higher. Didn’t Maddon bat him higher the game he DH’d? He should probably be top 4 against lefties.

Beckett is overrated (still good, just not some superstar), Dice-K is vastly overrated, then who else do they really have? Lester? Well he is comparable to Garza. We have a stronger 4-5 also.

Dice-K << Shields
Lester = Garza

Jackson << whoever they decide to throw

Dumbest Move of the Year ...

Trading Manny…

They would be better with Manny there. They should have traded Ortiz and kept Manny at DH. JD Drew being on the DL isnt helping them. Also if they had to play the Yankees every night they would finish with the best record in baseball too.

by PewterPirate55 on Aug 27, 2008 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

Bay isn’t that far off offensively and way better defensively (although still a minus). They got better in that deal and gained financial flexibility.

But I doubt their pitching is better.

by sofladude77 on Aug 27, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We have the better rotation and defense. They have the better pen and offense.

Delcarmen 2.93
Balfour 2.23

After that he blows everyone in our pen away.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well Clay Buchholz has talent too

But he can’t get anyone out. Masterson blows Delcarmen away right now

by sofladude77 on Aug 27, 2008 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No he doesn't.

Masterson Ks less, walks more, and allows more homeruns while inducing the same # of grounders and more liners.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who's pitching better??

No comparison, Boston would have Masterson in the rotation if not for their stinky middle relief

by sofladude77 on Aug 27, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Delcarmen is pitching better.

I think I pretty much established that when I said:

Masterson Ks less, walks more, and allows more homeruns while inducing the same # of grounders and more liners.

Unless you think the better guy who is:
- less prone to strike someone out
- more prone to walk a batter
- more prone to give up a homerun
- more prone to give up a hit

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Masterson harder to hit

Allows .213 BA, Delcarmen .242 BA. WHIPs are pretty close to the same.

by sofladude77 on Aug 27, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BAA is a poor stat to use to judge hittability.

It fluctuates based on things like defense. Delcarmen gives up less liners and therefore should have less hits fall for him. His BABIP is high for his 14 LD. Masterson’s is low for his LD. Those will regress.

Read the article I linked you to.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

They play on the same team. They should have the same defense. Actually you can probably make the argument that Delcarmen would have better defense than Masterson due to Mastersons time as a starter (late inning defensive replacements). Although I get your point.

by matthan on Aug 27, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Same defense, yes.

But my point was on the metric itself more so than this specific case.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Note that Masterson's ERA as reliever is

1.96, don’t count the starter stats. only 4 walks as a reliever. 18Ks in 18 IP. He turned A-ROD last nite into a DP victim with the bases loaded. Oh if you didn’t watch the game last nite Masterson got AROD out of the mess that Delcarmen made.

by sofladude77 on Aug 27, 2008 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Still you are overrating Delcarmen

I’ll take Bradford, Balfour, and Wheeler over Delcarmen, end of story

by sofladude77 on Aug 27, 2008 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Balfour is fine.

Wheeler or Bradford? You’re hurting your own team.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A lot to prove?

He’s having a good season. Don’t hate on him for your usage of incomplete metrics.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 27, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would take our bullpen over theirs

I think they have more talent. But as a whole unit our bullpen is more effective.

Take Papelbon v Percival. Sure Papelbon is FAR more talented at this stage than Percival, but the Red Sox get little edge there. The difference in real results(IE W/L in closing situations) between Percival and Papelbon is minimal at best.

But it’s basically used as a MLB finishing school. A lot of guys getting close to the big leagues that need to get some more polish. Almost everyone is at least a marginal prospect. It’s a pretty high level.

I say these are the call ups

Hitters: Dan Johnson, Jonny Gomes, Fernando Perez(and we wont use him I bet) and Joel Guzman

Pitchers: Jeff Niemann, Mitch Talbot, Scott Dohman

that makes 32 players plus Longo back, 33 player roster and we should get a 34th the last week.
