Projected 2008 Elias Player Ratings
This guy claims to have cracked the Elias algorithm for ranking free agents, which is pretty cool. Of course, the Elias rankings themselves are awful -- inputs include AVG, RBI, HR, Wins and other dumb, basic measures. Oh, and center fielders are lumped in with corner outfielders and first basemen. And there's no measure of fielding for that group, and fielding percentage is as far as fielding goes for infielders. The only thing that's remotely intelligent about the ratings is that two years' worth of data is used.
Anyway, here are some Rays ratings:
A Level
Upton
Crawford
Pena
B Level
Iwamura
Navarro
And, to prove the ridiculousness of these ratings:
Delmon Young - B
Brendan Harris - B

Wow, the ratings are pretty silly
Some good news for us though – Pudge and Giambi are only B level, so the Yanks won’t get much if they offer them arbitration.
Looking at the players we might go after, it looks doubtful that we’ll lose our first round pick. Ibanez, Burrell and Dunn are probably the only A guys we might go after.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

i'm going to assume you're laughing that Ellis isn't a type A, because he should be
and Renteria’s not too bad, considering the lack of depth at SS these days. he’s a league-average hitter (based on 2006 through 2008, not just 2008) and a good fielder.

si
Renteria isn’t much of a defender these days is he? From what I’ve seen and heard from fans of his last three teams he’s pretty below average.

just quickly, Renteria's -5 runs by averaging STATS and BIS zone ratings.
so good point. Justin has him at replacement level overall this year. ouch.

I wonder what type of rating Hinske has...
I don’t think people entertain the possibility of him leaving enough…

he's like 25th unranked (C) player for 1B/OF/DH
just behind Brad Wilkerson and just ahead of Willie Bloomquist. again, not that that means much based on the algorithm used.
i’m more than fine with Hinske sticking around for a few million as DH. he should not be in the outfield next year and he should not be paid much.
