by Tyler on Aug 28, 2008 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A more legitimate question.

I wonder what he means when he says “different market, drawing 2 mil + 10 years before that”? The Braves were awful for 6 consecutive years, that was the result of their drop. Now the Rays have 14 home games left and are 5k behind that average to this point. It’s mathematically impossible at this point for the Rays to reach a 26k seasonal average. I’d be more interested in knowing if he’s going to be satisfied or dissapointed with the final numbers if they stay the same or creep up slightly, and what he expects to see for next year.

I’m honestly concerned that if we’re looking at 21-22k long term, that this team won’t stay here for long.

by kericr on Aug 28, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand the response. Yes, we’re comparing different markets and times. Yes, the Braves did have over 2 mil. the year after they won the NL West pennant in 1982 and yes the Expos drew very well in the early 1980’s after being playoff contenders beginning in 1979 and Olympic Stadium was still state of the art.

So he’s not happy with attendance? He thinks it will be better next year?

no, wOBA is different, it's like OPS, but better

you can have wOBA for pitchers.

tRA for hitters wouldn’t mean as much, because the assumption that htiters don’t control many things other than K/9, BB/9, and GB/LD?FB% doesn’t hold. Hitters DO show a wide range of BABIPs, HR/FB, etc.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 28, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wOBA isn't tRA for hitters, no.

But it’s probably the most advanced offensive stat out there, no?

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 28, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, sure.

it’s linear weights, but in a rate form, which is nice.

for those unfamiliar, think of wOBA as OPS but with all hitting events weighted properly and on the OBP scale.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 28, 2008 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wOBA for pitchers isn't as useful as for hitters

for the same reasons that OPS-against isn’t a great stat for pitchers — you’re holding them accountable for all hits, when fielding, luck, ballpark, etc. make an impact.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 28, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, actually -- PrOPS (over at hardball times)

invented by a different guy. and while it has its uses, it suffers from the problems i listed above (some things that you don’t credit/blame to pitchers you SHOULD credit/blame to hitters.)

He seems to have improved his control by reducing his velocity? I seem to remember him regularly touching 97-98MPH on his fastball. Now it seems like he’s around 93-94 and only occasionally run it up when he feels he really needs to try to blow it by?

If so, I don’t see that as an improvement in skill as much as an improvement in approach.

i love Sonny

and would rather the Rays trade Kazmir than see Sonny moved to the pen. at that point, it’s just a waste of resources.

LOL

Not when he had a WHIP over 2.0. That’s on him.

Of course he wasn’t the only reason for the difference from last year, but he wrecked many an 8th inning.

Camp is a GB pitcher who relies heavily on his defense.

This is why his WHIP is so high, and how analyzing his WHIP in this circumstance is largely worthless.

Well....

….he was walking guys and giving up a boatload of hits. How is that on the defense? What does it matter if he was a groundball pitcher? If you’re saying his defense let him down, plenty of runs would’ve been unearned. Last year his ERA was over 7. In short, he sucked.

giving up a boatload of hits. How is that on the defense?

Groundballs + bad infield defense = more grounders getting through holes for hits.

fielding is more than not making errors

you can get a bad jump
you can be slow
you can take a bad route
you can position yourself poorly

all of these things will result in not getting to as many batted balls as the typical fielder. none are counted as errors.

That's fine

except how many of those hits were little dunky seeing eye singles that would’ve been scooped up by this year’s defense? Some? Fine. He still got hit hard. I don’t care if he’s a GBP and that’s why he walks alot of guys. You can’t afford to be walking guys in the 8th and 9th innings. He had the highest WHIP on the team out of the late inning guys. If you want to make a smoke and mirrors argument using BPIP or look at his tRA…. k, I’ll take your word for it.

His tRA is 3.3 this year.

WHIP is not a good metric to use either, it counts homeruns and singles as the same.
