MVP: Kaz

because if not he may have to be considered the 4th best starter right now on the team given the way Garza and Jackson have pitched over the last month

I love Kazmir

I just wish he would quit thinking so much. He has reat stuff, and the defense is reat, just throw strikes.

by rglass44 on Aug 29, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He throws strikes

They keep getting fouled off. That’s why his pitch count has been going nuts as of late.

Last outing was a good start, 6 innings and 108 pitches last outing is an improvement over what we’ve seen as of late, even if he got touched up for a couple of homers.

by kericr on Aug 29, 2008 5:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

I just want to see dominant starts, how about 12 Ks and 7 IP.

by rglass44 on Aug 29, 2008 5:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As long as he's abandoned his slider, I doubt we see that again this year.

I don’t know if he’s trying to do something to preserve his arm and stay healthy or if he still doesn’t have location for it or what, but if he’s throwing fastballs 85% of the time from now on, we might as well just run Balfour out to start games.

by kericr on Aug 29, 2008 6:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As for Bartlett, manager Joe Maddon said the shortstop isn’t hurt, he just wanted to give him a day off this weekend, and would rather have it against the RHP Jeremy Guthrie than the two left-handers the Orioles will throw the next two days; Bartlett will be back in the lineup Saturday, when Orioles LHP Chris Waters will start in replace of RHP Daniel Cabrera.

Fun.

No. 2 overall pick Eric Hosmer has been pull out of today’s game with Idaho Falls of the Pioneer League. This happened at the commissioner’s request, and is obviously related to the grievance filed by the union related to the Pedro Alvarez deal, and the Pirates‘ official response, which noted that Hosmer’s deal with the Royals came into the commissioner’s office even later than Alvarez’ did.

by Albertrayon on Aug 29, 2008 8:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Yankees need to seriously consider doing everything they can to rebuild their farm system

Their biggest problem is that they have absolutely zero depth anywhere. No pitching, no fielders, nothing in their farm system.

by kericr on Aug 29, 2008 8:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

their biggest problem is they can't evaluate talent

Melky as a full-timer on a team witha $200MM payroll? Abreu in the outfield? Signing Posada to an extension? Sticking with Jose Molina as their starting catcher for so long?

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 29, 2008 8:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

when you have a HUGE payroll, overpaying for players isn't necessarily a bad thing

it’s the fact that they’ve spent money on overrated players — nobody could guess Pavano would have been struck by lightening four times, but it was obvious he only had one good year before coming to NY.

and kericr made a good poing about depth. spend some money on a decent fourth outfielder or a sixth guy for the rotation, etc.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 29, 2008 8:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They're in such a horribly bad way now

Seriously, if they attempted to fill all their gaps in FA, including building their depth, I’d guess their payroll would be close to 300 million. Sometimes, you just gotta fold your hand. The Yankees are a team that needs to consider rebuilding this time, not reloading.

by kericr on Aug 29, 2008 8:41 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well, they've got a lot coming off the books right now

so if they choose to spend wisely, it will make a difference. you can build the farm system and spend money at the same time.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 29, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Three big FA pitchers

CC, Sheets, and someone else, can’t remember.

Gotta be a good race between Pavano and Hampton.

Purveyor of inane douchebaggery and general snarkiness

by RATW on Aug 29, 2008 8:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Crunched the numbers for 2005-2008

since they’re pretty comparable between those years.

Mike Hampton is making $55mil of those years with a total of 109 IP thusfar for $509k per inning.

Carl Pavano is making $40mil with 116 IP thusfar for $345k per innning.

Those numbers will drop throughout the end of this year, but still a ridiculous amount to pay per inning and should hopefully (along with Zito) serve as a warning story against long, expensive pitchers’ contracts.

by Albertrayon on Aug 29, 2008 8:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We should sign them!!!

Juan Guzman: 1.2 IP = $12 mil
Wilson Alvarez: 377.2 IP = $35 mil.

Purveyor of inane douchebaggery and general snarkiness

by RATW on Aug 29, 2008 8:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

like i mentioned with the yankees before, the contract isn't the biggest problem

it’s that those three pitchers weren’t all that spectacular. Hampton’s FIPs before signing with Colorado were around 3.85 — good, but not as good as his ERA suggested. Zito hadn’t been in Cy Young form for a number of years and his tRA’s were in the high 4.00s for many years. Pavan had ONE good year and a bunch of short or bad ones.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 29, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah, he's gone -- awful fielder and the Yankees already have a ton of DH options

Matsui really should be DH, but that might have to fall to Posada. Tex is actually a pretty decent signing, considering his nifty glove. If Posada DHs, that’s it other than pitching. If Posada does not DH, then Matsui does and they can add a good OF — but there aren’t really any on the FA market

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 29, 2008 8:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This site is the only one I frequent that also has problems in IE.

by kericr on Aug 29, 2008 8:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by Vin on Aug 29, 2008 8:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is a little more of a programmer question

I couldn’t tell you for sure, but my guess would probably be due to how IE integrates into windows; IE in addition to being a web browser, also acts as the OS file browser, preventing you from ever having multiple versions of IE on a windows OS system. You an install multiple versions of FF without a problem.

FF is the better browser, I’ll never debate that. It’s just not a better browser for me.

I used IE until about 2005

when my compsci prof for my Javascript class said he was testing all of our websites in Mozilla. I think he even referred to IE as “Internet Exploder”. He was kinda of jackass, but I just got so used to the format I haven’t switched back.

by Albertrayon on Aug 29, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He did that with good reason.

IE 6 (the latest IE in 2005) is absolutely horrible to program Javascript in. IE 7 is light years ahead but still pales in comparison to Firefox. Trying to learn Javascript AND code in compliance with IE at the same time is overwhelmingly difficult. You can learn correct JS first then go back and learn all the hacks for IE later.

by kericr on Aug 29, 2008 8:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, that was what we eventually figured out.

That prof sure was a jackass though. He had a website on the school hosting where he referred to himself as Sting (couldn’t tell if it was the wrestler or the singer) and had a bunch of pictures of him dressed up in armor swordfighting like a big fat sweaty knight. We also found out from that site that he was dating an extremely ugly student.

by Albertrayon on Aug 29, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am aware of the phenomenon.

Back around 2001-2002 when I was a Senior in highschool, there used to be a group that would meet every once in a while off Fletcher Ave. in Tampa to dress up like knights and pound on each other. I always used to drive past it and go “WTF?” until someone brought it up in class and a classmate explained what was happening. I think he was made fun of for knowing.

Tomorrow is "We the Kings"

some local band. Do they have someone tonight? I know it was the Baseball Prospectus meeting before the game.

I still think we could use a better leadoff guy

but I’d really like to see Aki signed to an extension.

i want a BJ extention

and I think he will back off his year to year stance

he's a solid player and worth it at the right price

but i’m guessing he’ll get more cash from another team than we should pay him

If anybody's interested a did a comparison above

of $$$$/Inning for Pavano v. Hampton over the past 4 years. Assuming both of them break or tear or blowout something soon (a fair assumption), the Braves are paying $509k per IP over the past four years, while the Yankees are paying a frugal $345k per IP over the same timespan. Obviously both of those numbers will drop through the end of the year, but not too dramatically. And we call the Yankees mindless spenders…

How about Juan Guzman?

The Devil Rays signed him to a 2-year $12 million contract and he pitched exactly 1 1/3 inning for them before blowing out his arm. That’s like $7.2 million per inning pitched.

Yes I realized shortly after I started looking through the stats

that there would be a few cases like that which would blow Pavano and Hampton out of the water. In the end however I think Pavano’s contract is more a kick in the balls than Hampton’s. Hampton’s contract was a little longer so the Braves at least got some quality pitching for like 2 years before he got hurt. Pavano’s been hurt since the first year of his contract.

He started bitching about a ball that he thought was a strike

The ump told him to throw the ball back to the pitcher, and he snapped. Started screaming at the umpire and got tossed. He dumped his glove and mask on home plate and continued to yell and scream as he walked off.

Ump has had a tight zone all night, then a pitch he thought Aki swung at...

Ump told him to get the ball back to the pitcher, and he didnt appreciate it.

Kaz just needs to get through this inning

and hope the best bullpen in baseball doesnt give up 10-0 lead to get all the SP’s to 10+ wins

Who woulda thunk...

…If you drafted the entire Rays rotation for your fantasy baseball team, you should be blowing out all of your opponents in pitching stats.

TB's bullpen is great

but its not the best. Not even the best in AL. The lowly jays top TB’s bullpen in every meaningful stat but saves, and the phillies bullpen is better than TB’s in every aspect. But a good bullpen none the less.
