Recap

Shawn Riggans at-bat came far too close to being a tragedy. Thankfully he seemed okay jogging in for the winning run. Unfortunately we may see two DL trips coming Joe Maddon said both were fine in the post-game interview, but we may also see Rocco Baldelli return tomorrow against a lefty.

Oh and B.J. Upton is damn awesome.

If anybody

Bartlett should be replaced by Zobrist

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

I didn't understand why we went with Zobrist the first time and I wouldn't this time either

Zobrist is hitting .230 in the majors and Brignac is significantly better defensively.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 3, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Did Brignac even get a hit last time he was up?

And Zobrist got some clutch homers last time up too.

by Orlando Rays on Aug 3, 2008 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope you aren't basing anything on those numbers...

Zobrist has 74 at-bats. You know what the difference between a .230 and .280 hitter is in 74 at bats? Three hits or one more hit every five games. I wouldn’t put too much faith in that.

by tallyray on Aug 3, 2008 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

brignac > zobrist offensively (slightly at this point)
brignac >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> zobrist defensively

by matthan on Aug 3, 2008 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Last time they had a choice to make between the two, Zobrist played while Brignac sat on the bench.

I would say that doesn’t bode well for Brignac being promoted before Zobrist. Also, looking at the box scores, Brignac seems to be really struggling at the plate. Any insight on how he’s played?

by RATW on Aug 3, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You don't bring up a minor league player who clearly isn't ready.

That’s the argument. He doesn’t need to come up when he has plenty of work to do at AAA. He isn’t a large enough improvement over Zobrist (I think less than zero) to have priority.

But SS Jason Bartlett, who left the game in the 10th after a ball struck his right index finger on a failed bunt attempt, said X-rays were negative for a fracture. Though his finger was taped up, manager Joe Maddon said he doesn’t anticipate a disabled list stay for Bartlett.

On the next pitch, backup catcher Shawn Riggans was struck in the chest by a pitch from Fernando Rodney. Riggans was tended to for several minutes by Rays medical personnel, but stayed in the game and scored the winning run

Riggans said afterward he was fine, he just lost his breath for a moment. Though it was definitely a scare, “there was no way I was coming out of the game.”.

The sad thing is

that parody and satire are no longer possible because no matter how outrageous the statement, enough people actually say things like that so it seems serious.

It is virtually impossible to exaggerate or caricature.

Sad but True

I enjoy the fact that many new fans have come to the table, but it definitely lowers the collective baseball IQ. My brother-in-law went to grab us a few beers at the Brewhouse during Friday’s game. He came back shaking his head, explaining that some guy in line told him the following: “What we NEED to do is get rid of Upton and that Howell guy!”

uppercut!

No kidding. After somebody for Det doubled off the wall in CF today, I heard a guy behind me tell his buddy that Upton is “a lazy ass” and they should “sit his ass on the bench”. wtf, he played the ball perfectly on the carom and thought about taking a shot at second, but bobbled it slightly and made the safe throw to 3rd instead (on a rope from the warning track, I might add). There was nothing any Hall of Famer could have done better, yet there was some moron talking crap about BJ.

It’s a couple of local sports radio goobers driving this perception, and it’s not only baseless but detrimental to the team. BJ hasn’t signed an extention and the continued unfair scapegoating won’t help matters.

Im never good with this sort of thing, but i’ll go ahead and get the ball rolling:

‘Scapegoating is Lazy.’

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 3, 2008 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, he's one

Also JP Peterson on 1010. I heard about Duemig 2nd hand so I don’t know exactly what he said. However, I myself heard JP going on and on one day last week about BJ needing to ride the pine to ge thim to work harder, and speculating that perhaps he’s lollygagging because he’s jealous of Longo. Just ridiculous stuff, imo, with no basis in actual knowledge or observation.

I actually used to like Peterson, but he’s gotten a bit big-headed and (yes) lazy himself since changing stations.

by zeng8r on Aug 3, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard what he said on Friday

He made the association with him, Demlon Young, and Elijah Dukes (which I have done). He cited his injury as a possible reason (which I have done). He’s called him lazy (which I have done). He ignored his stats (which I never, ever do).

It’s hard for me to say that the guy is a bum when he produces results. The fact remains that as much as we wish BJ would start hitting homers, and I still wonder if his shoulder is bothering him, with the exception of last year, he wasn’t known as a home-run hitter. He didn’t hit a lot of them in the minors, he didn’t hit a lot of them in the majors other than last year, and I no longer feel I’m being reasonable by expecting him to hit a lot of them now.

I think that last year was an anomaly and that the Rays came in unprepared thinking he’d be capable of hitting 30HR over a full season.

by kericr on Aug 4, 2008 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

is this true?

Me too

It is incomprehensibly stupid. The notion that Upton is lazy or dogging it fits well on the Heater or talk radio but has no place on any site with a modicum of self-respect.

Thoughts from game.

BJ seems to be heating up. The last two days the ball has been flying off his bat. He is hitting it with that bat speed again. I am expecting things from him.

Good to hear Barty and Riggy ok. Bartlett is so great defensively we need him. Percy needs to not go over an inning like someone said.

by SRQman on Aug 3, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

Percy needs to not pitch with less than a two-run lead

I’m fine with two-run saves (for now). But he’s not the bullpen ace and he doesn’t have a claim on being any higher than third on the ladder (and Wheeler has something to say about that). So in the really important situations, it HAS to be Balfour for Howell, or else we’re going to see more situations like tonight.

Imagine if the Rays lost this game. How much more pissed would we be at Percy? We’d lynch him.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 3, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately

I doubt Maddon is going to buck convention. What you describe (and what I’d favor as well) is a ‘closer by committee’, which is still frowned upon.

I think what its going to take to buck the mold is for a group of young relief pitchers to advance through an organization at one time, and have sustained success in mixed usage situations (ala Dibble, Charlton, and Myers, but for a longer run). Please Billy Beane, show them the way!

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 3, 2008 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

sigh, i know it's not going to happen.

too bad. i guess i’d rather have howell or balfour as “the closer” even though they’d be wasted in some big-lead saves.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 3, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed about Beej

Its nice to see him hitting with his hips again. I actually first noticed a difference in BP on Friday. He was making an obvious effort to pull. In fact, he didnt hit a single ball the other way his last few rounds, a marked change. The results were pleasing (for BP) as hit 4-5. in excess of 400 feet.

Even if he doesn’t continue to hit for power, I applaud his change in approach, as the opposition is definitely cheating him. I remember at several points this season seeing outfielders treat him as less likely to go to left than CC or Pena.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 3, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

interesting stuff...

do you watch BP frequently? ever challenged yourself to write down these types of observations that day and see if hitters respond in their production over the next week or two?

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 3, 2008 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah

I watch BP every game I attend. It’s my favorite part of the ballpark experience, as it’s interactive, and you get a better feel for what the players are like IRL.

I’ve never thought of it viewing it in the way you describe, as the players themselves typically dismiss it as nothing more than ‘stretching out’. I just thought this was interesting because it wasn’t so much the results that got my notice, but the complete change in approach.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 3, 2008 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, and the change in approach is HUGE compared to results

i’m as big a fan of stats as anyone, but there sure as hell

next time you notice weird/different things during BP, please share. even if you don’t have any explanations or predictions, it’d be cool to hear about some player taking everything the opposite way one day when they usually try to hit grounders to the left side.

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 3, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

to finish that first paragraph...

i’m as big a fan of stats as anyone, but there sure as hell is a place for scouting when there’s a lack of data or for short term changes

For all the buildup he has gotten Rocco freaking

Baldelli better pitch 4 no-hitters in a row, hit 49 homers in 2 games, and steal home 29 times.

On his third try

Meyer on the other hand is 3-3 against FSU. And it wasn’t just the website or his lack of success against FSU that got him fired. He went a combined 3-8 against UM, FSU, LSU, and UT, always found a way to lose at least one game that should have been a ‘gimme’ against SEC west opponents, and never won a bowl game.

Zook is a superb recruiter, seemed to get along very well with his players, and always did a wonderful job in scripting the firts 15 or so plays for the offense. But he never seemed to make any halftime adjustments, failed to take advantage of our speed on defense, and was never able to control the clock with the lead. He should have done a lot more given the resources he had to work with, and deserved to be dismissed.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 3, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Meyer is translating the Spread Option into the SEC

Once the Defensive Coordinators in the SEC remember that it is a modified high school offense, they will be able to defend against it. UF will start losing Blue Chip prospects because their offensive superstars now will not translate well to the NFL. That is what any blue chipper in high school wants to do is go to the NFL. Speed on Defense will be what kills Urban Meyers tenure at UF. But fortunately for Gators fans I don’t see the SEC figuring this out anytime soon. If FSU could actually get their recruiting going and start signing real players again then we might be able to give you a run for your money. Urban Meyer will not last as long at UF as Spurrier did.

That being said Gator fans act like he is Spurrier reincarnated lol. Enjoy it while it lasts Gator fans, when you are on top there is only one way to go.

GO NOLES.

Most Gator fans are cool about the rivalry, others are complete douches about it.

Not a modified pop warner offense.

Jeff Bowden is the reason for the decline of our offense he set FSU football back 20 years. We need Mark Richt back oh wait he is too busy as the head coach of Georgia beating the Gators.

by PewterPirate55 on Aug 3, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

LSU has tons of speed

And a very smart head coach (and had a very good defensive coordinator). Nobody is stoppong the spread anytime soon. If Meyer has anything to worry about, its the possibility that MORE teams will adopt a similar style of offense, and he will lose whatever edge he has from being (somewhat) unique.

Oh, and just to pile on
