Perez & Jaso Coming

Making the first of several roster moves, the Rays have called up OF Fernando Perez from Triple-A and optioned reliever Juan Salas to Double-A.

Per Topkin.

Perez is a plus defender with good speed (and brains!) this season in Durham he has a 13.5 LD% and 60.9 GB%. His BABIP was over .400, so I'm not sure his numbers will carry over quite as well especially considering his 30 K% and 10.2 BB%. As much as I like Perez' story I can't see him being overly effective in the majors as anything but a pinch runner/defensive sub.

John Jaso will also be called up before Tuesday's game. He has an excellent BB/K ratio this season: 72 walks to 47 strikeouts. Between Montgomery and Durham Jaso has a 17.2 LD% and a .285 BABIP. He seems like a far safer player in terms of expecting offensive production than Perez. The question marks about his defensve have faded over this season.

Per Lancaster Percival and Salas will rejoin the team on Tuesday, wrapping up the first wave of expansion.

hmm

Friedman said the Rays do indeed expect Salas to be back Tuesday (along with Troy Percival), and they also will recall catcher John Jaso from Durham that day. That will be the end of the call-ups until Durham is done unless someone else is needed because of an injury in the meantime.

Darn it!

Would be nice to have Jaso and Perez going into the Bats series. But, hey, good to know the rest of the gang is staying through the IL run.

Price has been a surprise. I’ve seen both his home starts at the DBAP and his control is terrible. Great stuff if he can keep it in the zone.

I wonder what’s up. Other than his freshman year at Vandy, he’s always been very consistent with his control.

This is interesting though. I wonder if he was just frustrated and asked to be let go…

by Vin on Aug 31, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes!

Perez finally gets a chance and Jaso who keeps getting better with time gets to try the majors.

Maybe the open 40 spot from Birkins will create a Davis call up?

As i expressed to you early on here

i have thought this entire owner/fo/mgr have pushed the right buttons since day 1

This.

Very much. If there’s one thing I could pat myself on the back for it would be not questioning StuCo. They’ve done an amazing job since day 1.

I'm not going to get into another Hamilton rehash

But the drafting of Wade Townsend most definitely did not take place under Andrew Friedman’s tenure.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Aug 31, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not entirely true.

Sternberg was in the process of taking over during the 2005 draft. Someone in the organization said that we had to draft Townsend because he was cheap (the scouts wanted Andrew McCutchen). I’ve heard Namoli and Sternberg blamed for his signing.

My biggest criticism of that draft was not signing Bryan Morris, our 3rd round pick that year. In 2006, Logan White liked him enough to consider him at 6 if Kershaw hadn’t fallen to them. Instead he drafted him at 27. We had reportedly agreed in principal to a deal to sign him for 1.6 million during the summer, but Namoli nixed it. However, the take over was complete during the off season and they still didn’t sign him. He had TJ not long after he was drafted and has since been traded to the Pirates in the Manny, Bay deal. He’s been pretty solid for his first year back from TJ. We’ll see how his future goes, but he’s got a chance to be really solid arm.

True, but he had already hired Friedman and he was in the front office although not in charge.

But neither Friedman nor Lamar would have made the Townsend call. They can’t be blamed. It’s either Namoli or Sternberg’s fault. I wasn’t blaming Friedman. I also don’t know who made the Morris call. So AFRO covers anyone who is to blame (even though it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a huge mistake with hindsight, I still think it was one at the time).

I wonder if Jaso is being showcased to other teams to be used as tradebait in the off season.

Jaso is gona be 26 and I am pretty confident in Riggs ability for the most part. Most of the pitchers were caught by Riggs in the minors so familiarity is pretty good too

by Rays Rule on Aug 31, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

A month of spotty playing time wont influence any team’s opinion on him.

by Vin on Aug 31, 2008 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

We'll see.

Jaso is clearly the better hitter. In fact, it’s not even close. Jaso might be a better hitter than Navi long term, but his defense is the question.

It makes for a good argument does it not?

I never did say that Jaso should be #2 and Riggs #3

by Rays Rule on Aug 31, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

But you said yourself that it doesn't matter

Thus contradicting the point of raising in the first place. I understand that you agree with the point, and I agree with the premise that Riggans should be the top back-up as well, but for only legitimate reasons. The gulf of experience between a rookie and a player with one year of experience does not represent a reasonable argument, in my mind.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Aug 31, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I already stated my approval for Riggs. All I said was that I agreed with Tyler's comments.

In my mind, he has a better history with the most of the current pitchers and truth be told, Jaso should be a starter in this league. I’m not sure what being a backup does for his career. Riggs on the other hand appears comfortable in his role. Time will tell and maybe I’m wrong, but I say the Rays should trade Jaso.

by Rays Rule on Aug 31, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

we know one thing every 5 games Riggs will be in there

he and Garza have a good thing going and anything to calm Garza down and allow him to dominate I like.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 31, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe they should trade him...

or maybe they shouldn’t. But they aren’t bringing a guy up right now to showcase him as you wondered above. He is up because the FO believes he can help this team win right now.

by K-Rock on Aug 31, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Who would you leave off and who would you add to post season roster?

I say Fernando Perez over Justin Ruggiano and David Price over Jason Hammel

by Rays Rule on Aug 31, 2008 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

if everyone is healthy

SP- Kaz/shields/Garza/Jackson
BP- Balfour, Percy, Wheeler, JP, Bradford, Price, Sonny
C- Navi, Riggs
1B- Pena
2B- Aki, Floyd
SS- Bartlett,
3B- Longo, Aybar
RF- Gross, Hinske
CF- Upton, Perez
LF- CC, Baldelli

Essentially adding Price and Perez and losing Hammel and Zobrist

by Dbullsfan on Aug 31, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

if CC's back, not sure Floyd is there

CC would play against both lefties and righties, Baldelli and Gross would platoon in right, and Hinske would DH. if anything, a righty DH is needed.

What’s Perez’s use? Are we trusting Aybar to back up 2B and SS if something bad happens?

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 31, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

alright someone explain this to me if im wrong with any of this

so perez and jaso are now eligible for the post season roster(even though jaso has no chance unless navvy or riggs gets hurt) and now with the call up and DL of ryu, the rays can now pull a k-rod and put david price on the postseason roster?

i was starting to worry that they werent going to find a way to get david price on the post season roster if they wanted to, so the call up and dl of ryu is good news for me, also anyone disagree with me that since the postseason is a 3 and 4 man rotation anyway that they might go with 11 pitchers and keep zobrist on the roster and just cut miller since with price and howell as lefties, miller wont be needed

Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Gabe Gross= clutch.

by RaysOfHope on Aug 31, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree with cutting Miller.

SP- Kaz, Shields, Garza, Jackson
BP- Balfour, Percy, Wheeler, JP, Bradford, Price, Miller, Sonny
C- Navi, Riggs
1B- Pena, Floyd
2B- Aki
SS- Bartlett, Zobrist
3B- Longo, Aybar
RF- Gross, Hinske
CF- Upton
LF- CC, Baldelli

Uh oh…that makes 26. I honestly do not know who to cut. Zobrist??

by Kenny845 on Sep 1, 2008 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

If the season ended today...

I pick Jackson because he is the hot hand. If he struggles I feel like Sonny could bail us out big time.

by Kenny845 on Sep 1, 2008 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

which is why miller is useless

zobrist can be used as a pinch runner, and can play OF,ss,2nd so he would have more use than miller

Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Gabe Gross= clutch.

by RaysOfHope on Sep 1, 2008 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Regarding the Jackson or Sonny debate it kind of depends what team we face

For some reason I feel more comfortable with Sonny facing certain types of teams and Jackson facing others. Either way that isn’t going to make or break our season.

I like Perez on the PS roster. We need a pinch runner.
