I just wish we had Mike Defiliece up

I would love to see the great Fasano/Defilice match up

Hahaha, which one of you is this:

Seems to be a common theme with some of these players (Edwin, Crawford, Upton, Aybar, Floyd) I just don’t get them. I love watching Ben Zobrist play though, always good to see a fellow southern catholic succeed!

Someone told me

That Upton was gonna be gone after this year, or maybe next year. whenever his contract is up, because he doesnt want to be here. I disagreed, but why is everyone so down on BJ?

by jacksontsmith on Aug 6, 2008 1:59 PM EDT   0 recs

like?

All I ever hear about is his “lack of passion”

by Vin on Aug 6, 2008 2:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

JD

Not signing and playing for Philly started people disliking him.

How he has often followed up good seasons with terrible one’s is another reason.

His first year in Boston, after signing for $70M, would be a good example.

by TallMatt on Aug 6, 2008 2:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

plenty of good reasons

screwing the team that drafted you = valid
being fragile = valid
posting OPS+ of 105 while earning large money = valid
being a Seminole “grad” = valid

3 of 4

Could arguably be reasons to hate Rocco. Hating a player for using their leverage to get the right dollars or ‘fit’ is a stupid reason to hate a player. Do you also think that doctors should not be allowed to pick their hospital, that teachers should just randomly be assigned at the state level? Baseball has a very anti-competitive system for labor, and we shouldn’t boo the players who stand up for themselves and their families.

by GomesSweetGomes on Aug 6, 2008 5:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

define terrible

he had a 105 OPS+ last year

and would people be more happy if Drew’s had all 125 OPS+ seasons instead of alternating them with 160 OPS+ seasons?

does not observing passion matter if a player’s producing? does observing passion matter if the player sucks?

I never really got the hate on him.

He was average or above each season here. You would think the haters would focus on someone else, it’s not as if they didn’t have a ton of bad choices.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 6, 2008 2:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ben Grieve's bum rib

A random, reoccurring injury that kept him out for decent chunks at a time.

That’s why most people don’t like him… He seemed like kind of a pansy.

by Vin on Aug 6, 2008 2:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

BJ has been unfairly lumped in with Delmon and Elijah

So every little mistake he makes, which even the best and loved MLB players make, is severely magnified.

by matthan on Aug 6, 2008 2:02 PM EDT   0 recs

I have heard a lot of that

Doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

I remember when he got his DUI up here in Durham a few years back and it got thrown in the mix

with the bat tossing of Young and all of Dukes’ problems. Of course in the fine print it said like he had the equvilant of 1/2 a can of beer over the legal limit and the whole situation was odd (with getting pulled). He has never really been a part of that group other than being black and talented.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 6, 2008 2:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

DUIs really aren't a big deal

I know i’m going to get bitched at for saying it, but it isn’t that bad of a mark on character. It happens especially with the extremely low legal limits these days

by matthan on Aug 6, 2008 2:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yea, JJ Reddick got one around the same time, but was given a free pass

It didn’t suprise me here in North Carolina but in Florida, you would think the problem would be a little less.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 6, 2008 2:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

not that I'm proud but I know I have.

most people that go to a bar to watch a game usually have mroe than 3 drinks and that would put you over the limit

by Dbullsfan on Aug 6, 2008 2:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

drinking and driving is a huge deal

but it’s random who gets caught.

right

everyone does it. sometimes its unavoidable. like when you dont want to shell out $30 for a cab ride

by jacksontsmith on Aug 6, 2008 2:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it's avoidable by not drinking

you don’t HAVE to drink. people need more self control and need to prioritize a bit more

honestly, you can draw some parallels between a lack of statistical understanding of baseball and lack of statistical understanding of the dangers of driving drunk.

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 6, 2008 2:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

so you call in the .1% of people

I don’t think you understand the statistical dangerous of drunk driving. I bet the odds of someone getting in a crash while slightly over the legal limit is like 1 in 100,000. Maybe even longer than that.

by matthan on Aug 6, 2008 2:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

what's the .1% of people?

people who don’t drink? i just meant you don’t have to drink all the time. when you don’t have another option home, don’t drink.

i bet the odds are lower. but either way, that’s a huge risk. let’s say you drive home just under the legal limit 100 times. that’s a 1 in 100 chance of getting into an accident. let’s say that only 10% are fatal. that’s 1 in 10,000 chance of killing someone.

you’re going to play russian roullette with other people’s lives just so you can’t drink? seriously?

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 6, 2008 2:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wouldn't say it is random

It depends on exactly how much you drank and how much you can tolerate. Most guys can drive slightly over the legal limit just as well or nearly as well as what they do stone sober. It is just when they are way over the limit is when some guys hit problems.

Of course what you drive and passengers have something to do with it also. If you are driving a car that is all beat to shit then that makes you a bigger target. Now I don’t mean you need to be driving some pimped out Mercedes, but if you are driving an old car with a window busted in then your chances of a DUI increase dramatically.

by matthan on Aug 6, 2008 2:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

true

but at 2 in the morning, cops will pull anyone over on a whim. so it is random.

by jacksontsmith on Aug 6, 2008 2:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

well then clearly

the person i was talking to didnt know shit. i doubt its racism. i just think the average tampa bay area sports fan is fuckin retarded. ive heard the same shit in talking about the Bucs.

by jacksontsmith on Aug 6, 2008 2:02 PM EDT   0 recs

people in this area

dont bother trying to educate themselves on any goings on of tampa sports. instead they drink 12 beers and argue with me and are made to look very stupid.

by jacksontsmith on Aug 6, 2008 2:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Barlett for defense?

great timing on that comment – as he puts a large brace over his finger.

That would be pretty funny – we’d get to see some pitchers hit.

rocco going to be back tomorrow?

also why in the fuck is bj sitting? so what that he didnt run out a pointless grounder, that catch yesterday was amazing and was all hustle, bj is not lazy, his long strides just makes him look lazy. this defense looks like the one that made us the worst defense in the league last year and i never want to see it again! unless in a emergency situation
