Upton Responds to Benching
Upton said he agreed with Maddon; "I didn’t run it out - but It's over, done with, you move on. Learned a lesson.”
If nothing else Upton's maturity in the press is refreshing.

I'm impressed
pretty level headed for a guy who has been told he is awesome for his entire life, and he’s only 23. I expect him to come back strong. He has shown he is a good team player, which is incredibly overlooked.

Not surprised
B.J. showed this maturity when he was pushed down in the line up that one day. B.J. i hope gets it and uses it to get on a big hot streak.

What stinks
is that if he does get on a hot streak after this, all the aforementioned fools will say it was solely because of the benching and that Maddon turned him around.
OR
they will find another excuse to continue to hate.

Which really makes no sense at all.

It's almost like
He wants to win, and doesn’t want to be a distraction to the team. Nah, its a sign he just doesn’t care because he gets his check anyway.

Not everyone has a Jonny Gomes type personality
It’s just the way he is. He is a laid back kind of guy. But don’t be mistaken(not that I think anyone on this board is) and think that he doesn’t want to win just as much or that he doesn’t give it his all because he does.
Most people are stupid. Luckily our front office isn’t. They know how good BJ is and thats all that matters

Better than the original quote
Per ESPN
“I just work for the team.”

Nothing factually unsound about that statement.

Homer
Seriously, there isn’t a way that comes off well. It shows he’s trying to distance himself.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

Actual quote was "I just work here."
And man, that sure sounds like he just doesn’t give a shit. That sounds terrible, but it’s a very selected quote so it’s possible it’s out of context.

You really can't win in this situation
Say what he said and you don’t care. Say you wish you were in the lineup and you’re being surly. Stay quiet and you’re sulking.

Actually, he wins pretty solid with the heater quote

I was sitting a couple rows above the dugout today...
BJ peaked his head out around the 4th and waved to the fans and tipped his cap. He definitely wasn’t moping and looked to be having fun. The guy likes playing baseball and likes to succeed. He’s 23. Age isn’t an excuse but BJ is having to work through some issues in the big leagues on a contender. A lot of players don’t have to do that.

What frustrates me is
where was this message when Crawford, clearly upset about playing CF, jogged to a ball and allowed Mark Teahan to score? If you’re going to send a message, be consistent. CC not hustling cost us that game.

And it wasn't a borderline case either
This was clear to everyone that he didn’t hustle.

And he went so far as to admit it.
But then again, Maddon did say this was a response to a more or less warning he gave before the Kansas City series. Crawford’s gaff occured before that.

Also there is no reason for Maddon to prefer CC over BJ
BJ does not get harsher treatment than any of the other stars. Maddon does not have some secret agenda. BJ screwed up, and he took the punishment like a man. You are grasping at straws if you try to bring CC into this.

I like how there are actually people in this thread responding with
“Well, he doesn’t care because he says that he just works here”
Would it really have been so much better if he said “I BLEED FOR THIS TEAM, FUCK SITTING DOWN” and then smashed his hand on a cooler?
The Dude is chill. Who give a fuck how much he loves the team if he’s balling for us. Fans love the team. Players work for it.

Barry Bonds considered baseball his job.
That kinda worked out well.

You're obviously too young to actually work for a job you care about
But that’s not an answer you give if you do.

You all fail to realise that BJ is not just lazy, but bad at baseball
Upton gets the heat THIS YEAR (not last year) because he has gone backward in his development. Last year he seemed to be a lock to hit .300 w/20 jacks. Now they are hoping for “mediocre” .275 and, at best 10 homers. On top of that he doesn’t run out ground balls-not just Tues., but several times (remember the KC series, it was BJ who was thrown out because he thought they were only making a play at 2nd). I think Maddon will excuse bad routes to balls hit in the OF because of experience, but this is his 3rd go-round at the plate (remember, Sweet Lou used him for 1/3 of the season in ‘05) and he should have a clue what he’s doing at the plate by now.

People who use batting average and homeruns to solely judge players shouldn't be allowed to have baseball opinions.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 7, 2008 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
WRONG! What that should read is:
“People who use batting average and homeruns to soley judge players should be given television contracts to espouse baseball opinions”

BJ upton
listen bj is basically a thug. you can see it in his demeanor, is actions, is no care attitude and look. my son has friends who live next to bj and they were at a party when bj showed up. they talked and bj said hes just hanging around until he is a free agent. he has told the rays he doesn’t want to sign with them and apparently they’ve tried a couple of times. they need to get rid of him. he is a cancer and thinks he can get by on talent alone. he doesnt think out on the field nor when he’s going to answer a question; ” i just work here”. what does that mean? when asked what he thought about being benched. yes other players like ManRam don’t always run out grounders but they back it up with there hitting. bj is has 7 hr and 49 rbi’s and a 265 avg. com on? i guarantee you, he thinks he should have been at the all star game. are you kidding. he is a nice player with fundamental discipline and too lazy to think. oh and he is rubbing off on C.C. he’s is another who thinks he should have been at the all star game. no way, he an average player with speed but doesn’t use it all the time. both get caught alot. as far as defense, they both need work. they give up on balls that Edmonds, Rowand, and most others would go all out. even if you think you wont catch the ball over your head, you have to try, ALWAYS, and then throw to the right base. I guarantee you they are jealous of Evan L. on any other team these two are just average players at best as they are now that Longo and Pena and Navarro are hitting and Gross keeps hitting in the clutch. get them off this team before next season. Upton is one of the 3 amigos and he does need to go. we won’t lose without him. players with determination and desire are better than players with talent, especially so so talent. for you Upton fans consider this; when was the last time you saw him look at the the 3rd base coach for a sign when he is batting? never, check it out. why? does he already know everything about baseball? and that turn on his left leg to swing only slows him down a fraction of a second but enough to miss alot of balls. the only reason he walks alot is that he takes alot of 3rd strikes and sometimes they are balls. he gets called out on 3rd strike without swinging more than anyone in baseball.

response to the english language
Ok, so by rushing to get some work done, i misspelled a few words. so the truth about Upton is no longer valid? you have nothing else to say other than catching my misspellings, WOW. Why do you like Upton so much anyways? Do you think he is the next Willie Mays, or even the next Torii Hunter (is my spelling right up to now?). he is a nice player that will bat 15/75/.280 for his career avg. and steal maybe 40 bases. he will also get caught at least 15 times and make plenty of errors on defense and other mental errors on the field and on the bases. Did you hear what a caller said today to the Big Dog show? That he idolizes Jeter so he is trying to bat like him. Does make some sense, but he should bat like last year and he would be a better player. I don’t like this kid, sorry. the 3 amigos are like the Carmelo’s and Iverson’s of the MLB. Upton needs to play a few more years and back up what he says with his bat before he acts like he has arrived.

2nd response
Hey,I understand that you are the main guy of this Blog site, whatever it’s called. So I want you to understand that I do know baseball. I grew up playing ball and have watched it all my life. I grew up in L.A. watching the Dodgers, Angels, and rooting for the Giants. I have been to 18 major league stadiums and watched hundreds of games, so I know baseball and love it and can tell you that Upton’s attitude is bad and he won’t get far like that. Manny Ramirez didn’t act as he does now, when he started with Cleveland. He paid his dues to act as he does now and almost at will he can produce. Crawford at this point in his career is not much better. He is not a leader and after 5 years in the bigs, makes a lot of mental mistakes. Any response will be welcomed of course.
