Proof Carl Crawford is having a great season
Carl Crawford Is having a great season He is a leader at his position in the AL and cannot be replaced this year.
Here are some examples
As a LF He leads the AL in the following categories
SB with 25
3B with 11
He is also is in the top 10 of many other categories
2nd in runs with 68
3rd in hits with 119
6th in rbi with 55
8th in batting .272
10th in OBP .314
And he plays gold glove defense. Where would we be without Carl Crawford?

Nor is 8th in BA with so little power.
Also, RBI is a pointless statistic.

There is no proof that he's having a great season.
Because he’s not. At all.

its not horrible, but below average from what people expected cc to do
cc hasnt had a SB in like 2-3 weeks

It's below average from what people expect an average left fielder to do.
Anyone who says this is a good (or great) season is simply being kind to Crawford. Yes, he still has value as a defender, but with his bat he has been a pretty big negative.

I was actually too kind.
It’s below average for what people expect an average player to do.

ya below average so far, i hope he turns it around during the last 6 weeks for the playoff push
i also think that they need to move him down in the lineup, but he will probably cry so i dont see that happening.
most of us expected alot more for cc this year and with aki, upton, pena, longo, and navarro hitting very well lately i think that the lineup should look something like this: aki, navvy, upton, pena, longo,DH,cc,RFer,barty moving cc down to the 7th spot would be better for the top of the lineup since he is holding it down with his unpatient at-bats and if he turns it around then the bottom part of the lineup will be stronger
Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Rays=WS champs 08! fiddler cat=best way to show your excitement. BJ UPTON IS NOT LAZY! ! ! Gabe Gross=caption clutch.

Gold Glove Defense? really?
a web-gem every other month does not a gold glove make – a very wise, small, green swamp creature says so.

Pat Burrell
Matt Holliday
Carlos Quentin
Jason Bay
Carlos Lee
Manny Ramirez
Ryan Braun
Fernando Tatis
Josh Willingham
Johnny Damon
Alfonso Soriano
Raul Ibanez
Adam Dunn
Scott A. Hairston
Jack Cust
Willie Harris
Luke Scott
David DeJesus
Marcus Thames
Fred Lewis
Skip Schumaker
Ben Francisco
Luis Gonzalez

Not to pile on Carl's strenghs + weaknesses but..
in a hypothetical Tom Szymanski baseball throwing contest – who has a better chance of throwing a runner out at home: Carl Crawford, Johnny Damon, or Kelly Leak?

Like OPS but reflects that OBP is more valuable.
Divided by 4 to make it in the BA/EqA range. Probably the best Offensive measure stat if you’re going by how it correlates to runs scored.

Around .260 is average
Think batting average, if you’re .270+ it’s good, if you’re .250 and below it’s not good.

If Crawford can get on a roll
If he can get hot the rest of the season he can get his batting average up.
I am hoping he gets at least 10 home runs and 20 doubles and bats .290

i would take it though
cc is hitting about .270 with 8 HRs right now so to see hit BA go up 20 points would be good with the way that upton, pena and longo have been hitting lately

I don't think you can use these types of numbers to judge CC
He is having a bad season, but his value really lies in stolen bases. He is never going to be near the top of OPS or any comparable metric to that. If CC was stealing as his normal pace then this year wouldn’t be too bad. It wouldn’t make me happy, but I could live with it. If CC is not stealing then he really has little to no value at all.
by matthan on Aug 9, 2008 12:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Stealing a lot of bases involves getting on base a lot of times.
This season Carl doesn’t do the latter, so he can’t do the former.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 9, 2008 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually that's incorrect.
There isn’t a correlation between stolen bases (or attempts) and on-base percentage.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 9, 2008 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stealing bases is great (if you have a high rate of success) but if that's where the bulk of your value lies, you're in trouble.
CC is a good player having a bad year. In the past, he’s gotten on base at a decent clip, had a little power, played solid defense and, yes, stolen some bases. He has some flaws in his game (like most players) that are being magnified by his struggles. He’s still a valuable (albeit imperfect) player going forward, and his skill set ages well. It’s frustrating as hell, but he’ll be fine.

using Justin's stats, which are the best, jerry, the best
Crawford has been the 29th most valuable corner outfielder this year (LF and RF together). (He’s been more productive than Vlad, though! How’s that for spin.)

the actual SB statistic is not where CC gets his value
It is in all aspects of the game that CC gives this team an advantage due to his speed. Even when he’s not running, the defense and pitching is worried about him running and that changes things. Same thing when he’s up to bat. It alters the way our opponents play the game. When you can do that, tehre is no numerical statistic you can put on how that helps the team. SBs are just one aspect of CCs speed that are very easy to track. His game can not be as easily dissected by common stats, because there are a lot of things he does that arent found in any statistic
That being said, Crawford is having the worst year of his career by the standards we hold him to.
by blazinrayz on Aug 10, 2008 1:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I am quite sure there have been various studies
of how base stealing threats affect pitchers. Do pitchers give up more hits or walks when they have a fast runner on base? There may even be some about defensive lapses and the like. As I recall, and I am being very tentative here, there did not seem to be any noticeable effect.
Statistics may not be able to capture everything, and few people think they are the be-all and end-all. But just about every factor one mentions leaves some trace, something that can be identified and measured. Given enough situations, a researcher can trace patterns built around issues like speedy base runners or clubhouse cancers and the like. While the results may be inconclusive, they can certainly be suggestive, and if they indicate no effect, the burden of proof that there is one shifts to those who claim it does exist. Simply referring to long time bromides or arguments like “it must be so; it is so obvious” are not convincing.
by bobr on Aug 10, 2008 2:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I find it hard to believe that what you say is true
Id like to see a link to one of those studies atleast
I think its pretty obvious that speed is a factor in many other ways. How many balls does CC get to that the average LF cant? How much is it in the infields head when CC is up to bat that they MUST field the ball clean and get it out quick or CC will beat out an infield hit? How much pressure is on the pitcher when CC is on base to throw the right pitch? How often does CC score from 1B or 2B when they average player cant?
I think there are only a handful of threats like CC in the league. Guys who have blazing speed but are duel threats to actually hit the ball hard somewhere. You have your Willy Taveras, Juan Pierre, Joey Gathright, and the list goes on of guys who are only speed threats. But then you have Rollins, CC, Furcal, Kinsler, Ichiro, Reyes—who have mostly well rounded games to go with blazing speed which makes them more valuable than the SB statistic shows
by blazinrayz on Aug 11, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I will not look for them now
but the burden of proof is on you. Show me the studies that indicate there are effects.
I don’t think anyone doubts that speed is a useful tool for a player. The issue is whether it affects how the other team plays. It is one thing to point out that Crawford can take the extra base that Navarro can’t or that his stolen bases will put him in scoring position more often.
But that is not the same as saying that pitchers throw different pitches or are less effective when he is on base or that fielders become less reliable trying to rush plays. He may, for example, get more infield hits than another player because of his speed, but that fact shows up in his BA, OBP and such stats. But show me that his speed affects the other team in ways that are not already evident in the stats we have.

More proof he was coming around!
Crawford was hitting .273 with eight homers, 57 RBIs and 25 stolen bases at the time of his injury. Crawford had hit in his last 11 games, batting .349 during his hitting streak with five triples.
5 TRIPLES come on man!!! He is leading the AL still in that department.
