FA Starting Pitchers
No matter which starters you rep, we can all agree it's better than digging through free agents for a starter or two.

Is he 4 or 5 mil better than Price, Niemann, Talbot, Davis next year?

certainly 4 or 5 million better than sonnanstine

Doesn't answer the question.
We’ll assume all four are > both (they aren’t), is he 4-5 mil better than them?
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 1, 2008 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions
not price, and probably not (right now) better than davis, but i'd have to imagine that he's 4-5 mil better than Nieman or Talbot
and he throws with a left-handed bent

Okay.
So would you rather have Perez or a new RFer? I’m guessing it’s an either or situation because Perez will likely get more.

But your original post said we can all agree that it's better to have a homegrown option than digging for a free agent
Nothing about RF was mentioned and certainly no either or.
Nice straw-man dirty dawg

I asked if he was 4 mil better than the internals because 4 mil is more important to us than the Yanks.

call me an ignorant ass. Oliver Perez is 4 or 5 million dollars better than Andy Sonnanstine
by Top Gun Numba 1 on Sep 1, 2008 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Sonny's FIP: 3.92 Perez: 4.74
tRA: Sonny 3.97 Perez 4.86
Plus a league switch for Perez, hm.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 1, 2008 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd still pay 4 mil for a compitent left-hander
by Top Gun Numba 1 on Sep 1, 2008 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
in general? or for the Rays?
i’m with you in general. not for the Rays, though. i’d rather use one we already have for next-to-free.
even if you go by ERA, that's an ignorant-ass-like comment
Sonny 2008 ERA: 4.61
Perez 2008 ERA: 3.90
Bump up Perez’s ERA by half a run for going to the AL and it’s almost a wash.
I see RJ posted tRA below. So yeah. FIP and xFIP are an advantage for Sonny, too.
Who wouldn't?
Oliver Perez is a back end of the rotation luxury very few teams have.
I'll pass
And look to add a full-time bat in RF.
I’m confident we have all the starting pitching we need.

Adam Dunn
He hates baseball, so we can get him at a discount

how about michael cuddyer or denard span in RF next year?
he is signed through 2010 and has an option for ’11 and is about 8 million a season, and i could see the twins trading him since denard span has stepped up alot this year, or if the twins dont want to trade cuddyer than span would be cheaper in players and is under team control for along time and has speed, some pop and hits for a high average and is a great defender
Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Gabe Gross= clutch.
Derek Lowe?
He’d be another interesting choice. His GB% is slightly down this year but his K/9 has stayed close to last years peak and his BB/9 is the lowest it has ever been.
Not exactly sure what he’ll cost but his numbers aren’t flashy, just consistent.
How about Paul Byrd, who btw won his 3rd start in 4 tries as i said he would
No need to give me his peripherals, i said on that team he would be a perfect fit and i am proving correct
So you're saying Hammel would
have won 3/4 starts as Byrd has
i'm saying Byrd got lucky and won't win 3/4 of his next starts (well, at least will deserve to win them)
just because a team has a very good offense doesn’t mean a crappy pitcher has more value.
Add to Byrd post
No need to give me his peripherals. I said he was a perfect fit for the Sox, and he’s proving me correct
You're so smart
What can’t you do Sternfan?
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
S^3
Over a long enough timeline you will always win.
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
Can't believe the Sox got him
The Yanks should have blocked that waiver claim considering they need the pitching too. Secondly especially given the fact they accused him of taking HGH right before game 5 of the ALCS when he started. Boston Globe started a completely unfounded rumor on him. Stay classy Boston … Hows the view five games back by the way.
Also … I would replace Sonnanstine with Brad Penny anyday of the week and put Sonny in the bullpen. Then say good bye to Hammel. Sonny could potentially be a right handed version of JP Howell IMO.
by PewterPirate55 on Sep 2, 2008 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I too can't believe the Yanks lost him
no players were involved, only his salary ($3 million)
Almost like the Yanks were trying to screw us
When i posted this i asked
you not to give me his stats, (didn’t open the link, btw)
Byrd knows how to win, and he’s proving me correct
"didn't open the link, btw" "Byrd knows how to win"
1. Great.
2. No, the Red Sox know how to win, Paul Byrd just happens to be their pitcher.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 2, 2008 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm not a fan of Paul Byrd at all
but for that team at this time. he’s a perfect match
Except he's awful and they could easily do better.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 2, 2008 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Give us his Red Sox stats, or better yet post ASG
v Jackson, Kazmir and Sonnanstine
And to do it w/o IP
is an injustice based on the Red Sox poor bullpen which he keeps off the field
"Poor bullpen"
They have a 3.81 tRA as a unit. That’s better than our 4.15 and just as good as Toronto.

Papelbon/Delcarmen/Okajima are pretty damn good.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 2, 2008 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Papelbon yes
Delcarmen has trouble locating, and Okigima has struggled, no longer the set up guy
Okajima: 4.12 Delcarmen 2.92
Balfour 2.2
Bradford 3.89
Howell 3.98.

We've been over this
Having one great reliever (and they have two really, really good ones) is better than three average-good relievers.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 2, 2008 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions
it's not a crazy idea.
if Balfour stays as closer, we’re comparable, probably slightly better. a bullpen ace is HUGE.
A simple yes or no
Are the Red Sox sorry they aquired Paul Byrd?
Here's my point:
Byrd 5.68
Hammel 5.67
If only Hammel knew how to win.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 2, 2008 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions
But
In Cleveland Byrd was 7-10, so apparently he knew how to lose a bit more than he knew how to win. The question is not whether he knows how to win but whether Boston might have gotten a better pitcher or whether he was better than what they already had.
Given how Buchholz was pitching, Byrd as an approximately major league average pitcher over the past few years probably has been an upgrade. In that sense it made sense for Boston to get him. But so what? You could say that for just about any league average or slightly less than league average pitcher given Boston’s offense and defense.
Jason Hammel in limited exposure is 4-4 with TB whose offense is inferior this year to Boston’s. Does that mean he “knows how to win” also? Every time some 30+ year old pitcher is dealt there is the claim that he knows how to win. Did Nolan Ryan forget how to win when he went 8-16 with a 2.76 ERA (142 ERA+) for Houston and then remember how the next year when he went 12-11 with a 3.52 ERA (94 ERA+)?
Byrd was a reasonable pickup for Boston because they had nobody better available (even that is questionable by the way), not because he knows how to win or is actually a good pitcher. With that offense and defense, nearly any major league pitcher can win games.
Incidentally, Sidney Ponson started his recent stint with the Yankees winning 3 and losing 1. I don’t think that is evidence that he also knows how to win or that his more recent 3 game losing streak means he doesn’t know how to win.
Also let's not forget.
Byrd is 3-0 in games in which he’s gotten 5+ runs of support and 0-1 in the game he got less than 5. That’s not a coincidence.

Will State It Again
For The Record…
Get Brad Penny and send Sonnanstine to the Bull Pen.
JP Howell Andy Sonnanstine and Balfour are a Solid top 3 options out of the Bull Pen
why the hell would we spend FA money on a starter?
it pushes a current starter to the bullpen (waste of resources), prevents a spot from opening up for a prospect, and ties up large money in one player on a team with a $40-$50MM payroll. signing a FA starter is pretty much the worst thing the Rays could do this off-season.
Plus
Penny is a dumbass (oh gee let me pitch injured, that usually works out well) and Derek Lowe would fit our defense better.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 3, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Lowe would be Jesus and Gods love-child on this team.
