September is Just Another Month

These last two nights presented two of the best  games of the season. I'm exhausted like the Rays bullpen but we just took two of three from the Boston Red Sox, in Boston, in September. Who needs veteran presence?

- Carlos Pena is a manster.

- Fernando Perez is fast and good on defense.

- Troy Percival is no longer in Maddon's fav five.

- Sonnanstine is what we say he is...

- Jason Hammel v. Jason Bay round two was enjoyable. His bendy things are nice. And bendy. B.J. Upton just got him in the face with a pie, so lazy.

Admirable job by the entire team tonight, now please hurry back Evan Longoria and Upton and we might need an arm or two from Durham soon.

Anyone think that David Price could be called up for 2nd game of doubleheader vs Baltimore after Maddon's recent comments?

Maddon opened the door for speculation that the nightcap of that doubleheader could mark the Major League debut of top prospect David Price, since an extra pitcher will be needed due to the fact the team has no more off-days after Thursday.

“We have discussed candidates [to pitch the second game],” Maddon said. “We have not decided yet. They have a lot of left-handed guys who are good, we’ll just wait and see. We’re talking about [Nick] Markakis and [Aubrey Huff]. We’ll just wait and see.”

it’s an absolute certainty. Maddon has pretty much all but confirmed it. And hell, why not? Yes, he’s struggled in AAA, but he’s still got absolutely dirty stuff. I think he’d step up his level of play in the majors.

PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!

The Rays got out of Boston in first place, but a handful of players were denied a clean escape.

When they returned to the clubhouse after the 4-2 14-inning victory against the Red Sox, some Rays personnel discovered their clothes had been confiscated and replaced with some, um, outlandish outfits in the annual rookie hazing road trip.

Among the casualties:

Evan Longoria (tight, sexy female police officer’s uniform), Matt Garza (taco costume), John Jaso (1960’s pink and white mini skirt), Fernando Perez (military police mini skirt), Andy Sonnanstine (turkey costume), Justin Ruggiano (sexy referee’s skirt), Michel Hernandez (frog prince costume) and Juan Salas (mariachi outfit). The hands down favorite was Tateki Uchibori, the interpreter for Akinori Iwamura, in a female gymnast’s outfit with red pumps.

The players left the clubhouse to great applause and wore their outfits on the charter flight to New York.

PERCIVAL - BACK WAS THE PROBLEM
BOSTON—Troy Percival’s explanation for what happened in the bottom of the 14th was essentially that his back locked up on him as he warmed up for the third or fourth time in tonight’s marathon.

Every time he struggles, he blames it on injury…maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not…

by metsjetssixers on Sep 11, 2008 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Perez isn’t a stud. IMO, he’s a good fourth outfielder who could be a servicable starter on some teams. The comp I’ve always used is switch-hitting Dave Roberts.

On THIS team, I’m not sure he’s even ideal as a fourth outfielder. As long as Gross is on the team our fourth OF should be a guy who can kill lefty pitching. Perez hits lefties a little better than righties, but not enough so to make it worth it.

If we don’t sign anyone new, I’d be perfectly happy with him being the 4th outfielder, but I honestly hope we sign or trade for someone, and ideally that someone would either platoon with Gross or push Gross into the 4th OF spot. Perez has two options left, and I suspect he’ll start next year in Durham again, and he the first callup if someone gets hurt.
