oh and he accepted an assigment to Durham
does this mean we can bring him back under a minor league deal next year.

He could probably be the 25th man on a lot of teams, if he has a strong showing in ST (ala Hinske)
So I’m sure he’ll try and sign on somewhere else if he can.
I don’t know what his MiL FA status is.

San Fran has two young 3B up, so they didn't make too much sense.
I figured the Athletics might take a shot on his power.

Wes Banskton agrees.

Neither has/would Guzman's
But I guess it doesn’t hurt to try.

he is out of minor league options
it is more than just “taking a chance” on him.
if somebody would have claimed him, Guzman would have to go on the 40-man roster. if he is on the 40-man roster, he has to be on the 25-man roster next season because he will be out of options. so not only would it cost the team the waiver fee, but also the player to be dropped from the 40-man and maybe somebody from the 25-man.
if he clears waivers anybody can sign him to a minor league deal and keep him in the minors.
his Durham assignment is just so he can play in the last game or two of the IL playoffs. he will be a free agent after the season and can sign with anybody.

....
oh…and his 103 to 19 strikeout to walk ratio is pretty clear message that he is not ready to handle a guaranteed major league job
by The Professor on Sep 12, 2008 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nobody said he was a good player.
However his power potential is there and some team will give him a shot based purely on it. Look at Dan Johnson, if a team like the Mariners claimed Guzman and decided he’s not worth a roster spot next year even in a platoon they could waive him and potentially hold him within their system.
The M’s won’t because they’re stupid but let’s not forget the days when we thought he would platoon with Willy Aybar. He wasn’t magically changing into B.J. Upton at that time either, now was he?
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 12, 2008 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
huh?
you are going to compare Guzman to Johnson? maybe you need to go back and look at Johnson’s minor league numbers. .390 career OBP in the minors….Guzman’s? try .311. Johnson showed in the minors and even in the majors that he could hit. his only problem was that he didnt hit enough to be a first baseman only. Guzman can’t even hit well enough to play middle infield. that is bad.
by The Professor on Sep 12, 2008 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uh, no.
I’m comparing the situations. Johnson was claimed by the Rays then immediately waived.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 12, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
because
at the time they needed a major league hitter and Johnson (a major league hitter) was readily available. then it turned out they didn’t need him.
Guzman is not a major league hitter and there is absolutely nothing to indicate he can be
by The Professor on Sep 12, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The .493 SLG against lefties as a 23 year old disagrees.
As a platoon player he is useful. He might not be ready right now, but he’s worth a try on weaker teams.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 12, 2008 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh and it IS taking a chance on him
There is absolutely no risk in having Guzman on your roster for the last month of the season. Why? Because these teams aren’t looking to win right now. If he sucks and they don’t think he has a future, then cut him. There’s nothing lost by taking a shot on freely available talent. Nothing.
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 12, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
except
apparently 29 general managers disagree with you…
do you really think it is even conceivable that Joel Guzman is all of the sudden going to learn how to hit a breaking ball…in the major leagues….in 3 weeks? he is just not a prospect any longer.
by The Professor on Sep 12, 2008 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right. 23 years old and a .784 OPS against lefties in the minors is useless.
Also nice touch on the GM line. Completely original, did you see that one on Deadspin too?

remember everyone including the rays gave up on carlos pena?
guzman could still be a diamond in the rough and he could figure it out one year like carlos pena did
Evan Longoria=ROY. Andrew Friedman=Executive of the year. Joe Maddon=Manager of the year. David Price= the next best pitcher TB Rays fan 2002-the day i die!
by RaysOfHope on Sep 13, 2008 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, it is possible
like many things are. But the fact that unusual things happen does not make them either likely or worth betting on. In this case, for example, there is no comparison between Pena and Guzman. Pena always was a patient hitter; Guzman never has been. Pena had had some major league success, if qualified; Guzman has stagnated in the minors.
I agree that Guzman might figure it out. Anyone with enough talent to sniff the majors has a chance to develop. But so what? My guess is he will be signed by some team next year for exactly that reason, that he has great athleticism and with hope that he can harness it to play baseball well. Chances are he will disappoint, but the lure will be too tempting for somebody to pass by.

No
There is SOMETHING lost – roster flexibility. Plus, grab him now, if he’s not ready for the 25-man by the time Spring Training rolls around, then you’re GUARANTEED to lose him since everyone else’s roster is already in flux.

by Brickhaus on Sep 12, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No need
He’ll be a minor league free agent this offseason. If someone claims him now, they’d need to put him on their 40-man roster, and then they’d need to waste a 25-man spot on him next year because he’s out of options. As a minor league free agent, you can just sign him to a minor league deal and hope he improves in AAA.

by Brickhaus on Sep 12, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Or they could just waive him in the off-season.

What the heck is the point of that?

he’d become a free agent

by Brickhaus on Sep 12, 2008 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why would he accept the assignment? wouldn't he be better off signing a minor league deal with another team?

by walkoffwalk on Sep 12, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why did he accept the assignment to play in a game or two more?
by R.J. Anderson on Sep 12, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Isn't that obvious?
His choice was a) play the last two games of the AAA championship and become a minor league free agent in the offseason or B) go home now and become a minor league free agent in the offseason.

it’s a team he’s been a part of all year. Why would you want to leave the team just when it hit the best part.
This is retarded. I don’t know why I’m even arguing with you. Usually you’re pretty intelligent, but this is just dumb.
