Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Left fielder Raul Ibanez is unlikely to return to the Mariners as a free agent, and is a good bet to land with the Rays as their designated hitter in 2009

Eh

Looked over his stats, changing my stance to “meh.”

if Rocco can play the field next season then fine with me

if he has to DH, then I prefer Rocco

Maybe I am crazy but I think he will be awesome next season.

by joeybw on Sep 14, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

You're crazy for two reasons.

1. He’s never been awesome. He’s been good, but never awesome.
2. This is the most important. He is not well. Not even close. He can’t work out because it takes to much out of him. The pills help him, but it hasn’t even come close to fixing the situation. He can’t even DH everyday. It would take to much out of him.

obviously price makes a big difference here, but I like the idea of Ibanez as DH

he’s a much better hitter than Hinske, Floyd, or Rocco. his Marcel forecast is .280/.347/.466, which is probably a touch low because of Safeco. the one downside other than price is that he’s a lefty.

At his current $5.5MM price tag, he’s a steal. I might go as high as $8MM for a couple years.

I’d still rather trade pitching for cheap young offense, but Ibanez is probably a more realistic and cost-effective option to Dunn/Mann/Burrell.

And I trust Friedman to realize Ibanez should never step on the field while a Rays pitcher is on the mound.

I don't know why people are so down on Ibanez's defense

I’ve seen the lowlights, but these are individual plays. Screwups to be sure, but I thought we use more than one observation. CLICK HERE FOR RZR RANKINGS Granted RZR is not the best measure and the way I have it sorted isn’t the prettiest, but .896 RZR puts him ahead of many other slugging LF’s. For the right price I would absolutely bring him in as a DH/Part-Time LF to spell Craw. You point out him being lefty and that is an issue as we need a solid righty, if Baldelli can’t be that guy.

That is why I am coming forward today to announce my candidacy for President of the BRING RANDY HOME fanclub. I will do whatever it takes to get Randy Winn in blue and white next year. Throw money at him, throw girls at him, do whatever it takes to get this guy on our team. He is the perfect type guy to step into RF next year. Quietly produces in all facets (offense 111 wOBA+, defense .943 RZR in RF in 2008, speed 25/27 SB’s). I am not sure on his contract status, but he made $8,875,000 this year for the Giants. They are a team in full rebuild mode with many holes. I would trade any 2 of Edwin, Riggans, Niemann, Talbot, Hammel.

I WILL NOT REST UNTIL RANDY IS BACK HOME WHERE HE BELONGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You Randytarians are nutjobs

I would like to announce MY candidacy for President of the BRING AUBREY HOME fanclub! Why would you want more of the same ineffective smallball antics from my opponent when you can have the throbbing power and grace of this franchise’s all-time home run leader back at the Trop, where he belongs? Vote for Change. Vote for Aubrey.

by kericr on Sep 15, 2008 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Just like my opponent to use personal insults,

but what he is not telling you is that Aubrey is having a career year putting up numbers he hasn’t approached in 6 years. My opponent wants you to think this is change and he is right, one-year change and then it is back to the same old Aubrey rolling over to first and jacking off in the hotel. I’m a Randytarian and I approve this message.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

by Sandy Kazmir on Sep 15, 2008 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Just like my opponent to ignore the facts

He’d have you believe that Aubrey is a one-year flash in the pan, but the truth is, he’s got the experience. He’s never known life outside the AL East except for a brief expedition as an AL embassator to Houston of the NL. He’d have you believe it’s all a fluke. But the fact is, he’s still a power hitter, and that’s what this team needs. Not another leadoff candidate. Aubrey Huff is the man for the job.

Let us also not forget that Randy Winn was in cohorts with one Barry Lamar Bonds, the SAME Barry Bonds currently facing federal charges for Perjury! At least MY candidate is willing to face his past!

Honesty. Integrity. Aubrey.

by kericr on Sep 15, 2008 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

How's this little fact:

Aubrey Huff is the George W. Bush of Right Field. A bumbling klutz that can’t stop tripping over himself. Randy Winn is silky like a stained dress. Gracefully galloping from line to wall. He knows this outfield after years of serving his team there. A claim my opponent cannot make.

Randy has been exiled for close to 2,200 days. Don’t you think it is time to bring him home? The man’s only crime is being a switch-hitting, base-stealing, ball-catching, game-winning player. Yes, he doesn’t have throbbing power, but he also will bring diversity to this team. Ask yourself, do you really want another old, white guy out there in this lineup? It’s time for change, and the only candidate that can bring it to you is Dwight Randolph Winn.

A vote for Aubrey is a vote for hypocrisy.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

by Sandy Kazmir on Sep 15, 2008 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

You call my candidate Old?

Winn is a whole three years older than the youthful explosiveness that is our Aubrey Huff. And I can’t believe you played the race card, once again diverting attention to the real issues of this election. Aubrey Huff is full of grit and hustle and intangibles and more importantly, is easier to control, something my opponent simply cannot say about himself.

Aubrey Huff was born US American from the Rust Belt of Marion, OH, while my opponent will claim to be a down-to-earth man of the people, but he was born amongst the glitz, glamor, and lights of LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA! He’s as down to earth as the Moon! Randy Winn has never been a part of this community. I bet Randy doesn’t even like strip clubs.

A vote for Randy Winn is a vote for more of the same.

P.S.

I’m not touching that throbbing power.

you need to include OOZ plays with RZR. and STATS zone rating matters, too

combining all that and you get Justin’s fielding ratings, which put Ibanez at -13 runs this year.

on the off-chance you're being serious, Hinske's Marcel is .251/.335/.451

and that’s with basically only hitting against righties this year. Ibanez is a career .270/.324/.415 hitter against lefties. and .295/.357/.500 against righties.

I was referencing playing Ibanez on defense, because Hinske has played a lot of “defense” this year and he’s been every bit as bad as Ibanez.

oh, the fact that Hinske is allowed to play the field? Uh, yeah. Hmmm.

although, Hinske’s not quite as bad. Ibanez is at -13 runs and Hinske’s at -4 according to STATS and BIS zone ratings. I’m sure Ibanez has played more in the outfield, but not three times as much. and he’s even worse historically.

Ibanez's defense makes baby Jesus cry.

Can we do any better? I mean, CC’s not moving to RF; and even if he did, his arm isn’t really that good. Then we get to deal with this defensive disaster in either of the corner outfield spots and just the thought of that gives me ulcers.

I like his Lumber, but only if he’s OK with being a full-time DH.

by kericr on Sep 14, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Career .857 OPS against RHP

I would like to see a Rocco/Ibanez DH Platoon, but Ibanez can his decent against LHP too.

2009 Line-up versus RHP if we get Ibanez

1.LF Carl Crawford
2.CF BJ Upton
3.3B Evan Longoria
4.1B Carlos Pena
5.DH Raul Ibanez
6.RF Gabe Gross
7.C Dioner Navarro
8.SS Jason Bartlett
9.2B Akinori Iwamura

If “Beejus power” returns and CC bounces back next year(and doesn’t complain about leading off) this line-up could definantly score some runs.

by twenty5psi on Sep 14, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

Dan Johnson?

If you’re looking for the LHB part of a DH platoon, what’s wrong with Dan Johnson?

by FI2 on Sep 14, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

Yeesh

how many platoons are we gonna have? I’m not sure it makes sense to platoon both at DH and RF.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Sep 15, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe so

But a team can’t really afford to have two different platoons at positions where there isn’t some defensive flexibility. Platoon DH is something I’d rather avoid, but if we ALSO have a platoon RF, that really just kills Maddon’s ability to futz with the lineup effectively, and we all know he’s going to do it whether or not he has the personnel to do so.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Sep 15, 2008 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

But I still think it'd work.

Besides, it’s the FO’s job to get the best players on the team, and then to make sure they have a manager who can utilize those pieces correctly. I agree that a DH platoon might not be the best thing, but it could be a lot better (and cheaper) than the alternatives.

Like signing Raul Ibanez.

by Peter Bendix on Sep 15, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He would be a solid fit

Although I wouldn’t mind having Dan Johnson be our LH DH.

And also it is foolish to compare stats of a full time player to one of a platoon. It is like trying to extrapolate your scoring rate with fat ugly girls to all girls. You have to compare apples to apples.

Ibanez is a far better hitter than anyone that is residing in any one of our platoons. Frankly it isn’t even close either. We could possibly get close to his production by using multiple guys to fill one position. Of course we lose roster spots by doing that.

by matthan on Sep 15, 2008 12:59 AM EDT reply actions

I actually think this would be a good fit.

A .290/.350/.480 bat is always a steal, and if he’s just going to DH he’s worth having.

But please play him in the field sometimes. I’m sure there would be GIFs and that they’d find there way to LL, which is something I’d be very grateful for. Raul GIFs are good for everyone

Ibanez or Thome?

Thome’s 2 years older but the Sox most likely won’t pick up his $13M option for next season. In Thome you’d get more power and he has a career .406 OBP/ .562 SLG%.

by Underdogs on Sep 15, 2008 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

Andrew Friedman & co are really smart.

And really smart front offices understand that they should not commit much to 37-year-olds who cannot play the field. Yes, Ibanez has a decent stick, but he’s old and his bat isn’t that good. Chances are, the Rays can find supposed 4-A talent freely available that can replicate Ibanez’s likely numbers, except without the risk/commitment.

Dear LiveJournal:

I’m finally being accepted by the community. It’s good to feel wanted. All my friends at SBN have been so nice. There’s this one guy, I don’t wanna talk about him yet…but…his avatar, it’s kinda cute. And he’s always so nice to me. He makes me feel warm every time he replies. I don’t always know who recs my comments, but I get the strange feeling that when there’s only one, it’s always him. I was thinking about sending him an e-mail, but I dunno, it seems a little forward and I don’t want to put him off. What should I do LiveJournal?

Sincerely,
davidsmarch

Dear LiveJournal

I have a problem. I don’t feel I am accepted by the people in my SBN community. I seem to always be doing something else. Something naughty. Tonight in the shower I had another vision of Scott Kazmir. I spent a lot of time in the shower just standing there thinking of Kazmir. His fastball not only makes me happy but also wants me to be his own personal catcher. I would even enjoy it if he occasionally threw a change up or slider my way. Scotty throws the fire and I have fire on my head, since I am a Ginger, and I want the fire of his balls to become one with my fire. That is enough for now I need to go back to my favorite hobby, but I need to figure out a way to get closer to Scott. Any advice LiveJournal?

Love,
P. Brady
